  1. I dont think their is a lost art of "writing" standards. There is simply a lack of incorporating new music into the repetoire. Many musicians consistently write engaging and interesting themes, but as jazz has progress from a purely innovative art form to a more personal expression art form, few are covering the contemporary music created by others. It has nothing to do with the quality of writing, but simply the approach to performance.
  2. I also enjoy the music greatly. Its on Emusic so I gave it a listen, not expecting much at all. I think like many others I was pleasantly suprised.
  3. An interesting anecdote. I had to drag my girlfriend to see this, she had never heard of it before. I knew it was Lynch and that was about it, so when she asked me about the plot I just joked and said "Im only going cause I hear there is some xrazy lesbian action it." Little did I know, there actually was crazy lsbian action in it. suffice it to say she was none to pleased and it took me awhile to convince that I really didnt know about the sex scene(s). Some VERY nice sex scenes though, even if the dvd blurs out the full frontal portion.
  4. Absolutely fantastic film. I got a fair amount from a few views, but some of the online explanations were very beneficial. Having figured it all out, it is actual maybe the most normal and straight forward Lynch film (outside of the also brilliant Straight Story.) I havent read the thread, so I dont know if its been mentioned that this was originally a TV series and Lynch changed it to a film (after the studios rejected it as TV) so alot of things are left unsaid. Such as the crazy sequence behind the diner.
  5. Jack Johnson is admittetedly subpar as a musician, but he is certainly honest. Damien Rice is another phenomenal songwriter. Id say check out the album "o"
  6. How much modern music do you listen too? By the "in-crowd" I simply mean those that are steeped in today's music, whic I dont think is the case for most of the people on this board. Daughters, to me, is one of the worst lyrics ever written and damn near the worst song on the radio in the last year. For those who havent heard it, hear is the chorus: "Fathers be good to your daughters Because they learn to love like you do Girls become lovers who turn into mothers so mothers be good to your daughters too" Interesting considering all he wants to do is engage in casual sex with as many daighters as possible. (Not that I cant relate) But to each his own, Im just trying to say where I'm coming from and what his music means to most people who listen to that style. If you like him at all I strongly suggest you check out people like Jack Johnson, Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine, Andrew Bird, and a myriad of others in a similar genre that simply blow him away. I don't even think I'm overstating when I say the general dislike of him in the "modern singer-songwriter" community is not unlike how we think of Kenny G. As for the fest as a whole, Herbie was the only jazz there, but a vast majority of the music relied heavily on improvisation. Bands like Dave Matthews, Widespread Panic, and Trey Anastasio were headlining, with all three bands containing some excellent musicians. Again, Mayer can play blues well. But he was simply out of his league. It was like Richard Nixon sitting in with Duke ellington. Hopefully a tape will be available, Im as eager to hear it as some of you seem to be. CJ, Ive been looking to get Flood forever but havent been able to find it at a store. I definitely need to listen to more electric Herbie. Im just waiting for Mwandishi 2005!
  7. Mayer didnt play alot of lead, I suspect there was a reason for that though. Loueke played more lead if I recall correctly. The only thing that really burned in my mind was Garrett far surpassing my usual high expectations, and Herbie sounding like good ol' Herbie. I dont know the song Actual Proof. I only recognized Watermelon Man which opened the show and Chameleon, which closed the show. They did one more from the original Head Hunters album, I believe Vein Melter. They did a new song which Mayer sang, and a few others that sounded almost like 80s stuff. Unfortunatley, it was raining, I was far away, and exhausted so my memory isnt entirely top notch.
  8. In most circles of the current music "in-crowd" he is considered about as legit as American Idol. I mostly agree with this. I think his lyrics and his songwriting is mostly atrocious, and his ego puts Keith Jarrett to shame. He seems to try way to hard to be cool and to be liked by girls, which he has achieved for the fans of MTV I suppose. Additionally, his voice sounds like a caricature of some guy who is sensitive, and it sounds ocmpletely forced. His guitar playing on the other hand is quite good. Especially as a blues player, he can definitely hang much better than one would suspect. That being said, he has no business being anywhere where jazz is being played, even if its primarily funk-jazz. All he did was play rehashed SRV licks all night, and he never had anything interesting going on. It was an off night for blues playing, and an utterly embarrasing night for jazz playing. Especially in the unbelivable company he was in.
  9. The Penguin guide to Jazz says about Lloyd that at one time he was so terminally uncool that it was considered a faux pas to mention in him in certain circles. Im too oung to have any idea what this means, can anyone enligten me?
  10. Unfortunately, I had to leave Allman Bros early to go see...Herbie Hancock. So I didnt see or hear Jerry Douglas. Allman seemed a bit lackluster from what I remember, but I also might be just remembering the rain coming down at the time upsetting me. Im prett sure Herbie just had a keyboard and a grand piano. The stage was far away with no video screen, so I didnt see much, The keyboard sounded quite nice though. Loueke was great, and Herbie introduced him on many occasions. Obviosuly MUCH better than John Mayer. Herbie also sat in with Widespread Panic and he played during the "SuperJam" with atleast ?uestlove of the Roots. The three songs he did with WSP were the only interesting moments from their sets. I only heard a very small bit of the Superjam, but it seemed quite good. Im very interested to hear the tape if I can get my hands on it. Bonnaroo has a universal taping policy that allows large set-ups and no taping restricitons, so we should get some nice stuff.
  11. I got a chance to see these guys at the Bonnaroo music festival. The lineup was steller, with Kenny Garrett, Roy Hargrove, Marcus Miller, Terri Lynne Carrington, and a couple others including (ugh) John Mayer. They did Chameleon and Watermelon Man and other Herbie funk classics. Herbie was fantastic as usual and Kenny Garrett was phenomenal. He got people going as much as anyone at the entire festival (which is saying alot for a festival aimed at hippie jam band fans of Dave Matthews and Trey Anastasio.) John Mayer was terrible. He can play blues, but he should NEVER be allowed anywhere near where jazz might be played. To top it off he sang some lite-pop tune that was terrible. Roy was underwhelming, but decent. Check these guys out if you get the chance, definitely alot of great moments.
  12. I agree completely. When you have not even heard the record you have no business whatsoever giving your comments, let alone alone abrasively attacking a poster who has heard the record.
  13. The obvious suggestions are Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young) and simon and Garfunkel. Also, the Byrds might be good, but they often have electrics.
  14. I would bet ten pastamakers that Detroit would beat them in 5 or maybe 6 games. The Suns have been lucky enough to match up against teams that dont play good defense up until the Spurs. And we saw what the Spurs did to them. The Suns are still a joke and complete pretenders, like the Kings and the Mavs have been all these years. They would have had alot more trouble in the East where we still play defense. The bulls coulda taken them to 7 and maybe even win. Just to prove to you that the Pistons can beat the suns, check back when they beat the Spurs.
  15. Im pretty sure I own that Monk cd. Good music, with Charlie Rouse on "tumpet" according to the liner notes.
  16. Im pretty sure the Impression double covers everything on the New Smokin cd. I just dont want the other Wes verve stuff. Even if the double disc has an extra track, its not worth it to accidentally hear that orchestra beind him.
  17. My queue is set through November of 08. Im a bit upset that I missed out on Genius of Modern Music Vol 2 and Ornette Golden Circle Vol 2. Both were eventual must haves, but I already have vol 1, so they were low on m queue. Now i might have to buy them for ten bucks like some kind of sucker! Next up, Wes Smokin at the Half Note! Maybe the best jazz guitar cd ever recorded.
  18. Is Never No Lament just a straight reissue of the previous Bluebird Blanton box with better sound? Its it worth the upgrade. I dont listen to the box much cause I dont like the sound and Duke hasnt really hit me yet. Its enjoyable, but definitely not something I reach for often.
  19. Does anyone kno0w of a good program for CD cover designers? Im usuing NERO right now and it is absolutely atrocious. The user interface is absurd and I cant do some VERY simple things (like copy and past basic text" Any ideas? I am very frustrated right now.
  20. Bucks with #1 pick in the draft, Should be an interesting change for such an invisible franchise. My guess is Andrew Bogut. Bobcats got screwed, falling to 5th. Anyone else think this draft lottery thing is a little silly?
  21. I recently downloaded a 12 cd set of live recordings from www.dimeadozen.org Obviously I would still welcome a box set, but this music tides me over quite well. Brilliant stuff. The Duffys Tavern stuff is worth it just for the drumming. Its quite amazing.
  22. So far they have a bunch of Matthew Shipp and a few others. If they keep adding artists, especially William Parker, I will definitely sign up again. Definitely an exciting development. I record companies were smart, they should put there OOP stuff up there. Come on Blue Note!!
  23. I was actually listening to it as I clicked on the thread. It really is fantstic. Something about that Europe 72 tour that is, imo, above almost all other Dead.
  24. Pistons in 6. Maybe 7, but that would be very tough to close out in Miami. Shaq is old and injured. Pistons matchup nicely with a string tough defener in Billups on Flash and help D from Ben, who Im pretty sure can leave Udonis Haslem open all day.
  25. You could hear alot of it, which I thought was a bit of an invasion by ABC. He said to Rip to keep playing and keep those legs moving as long as he could because he's "the truth." Great moment at the end. Bring on Miami. Fianlly, a team with a remote possibility to beat the pistons. too bad they wont. Sheed is gonna own Udonis Haslem and the Heat only have two guys (flash and eddie) who can do anything against Tay, Rip, and Chauncey. Everytime down the court the pistons will have two or three advantages. Miami will only have one, a hobble Shaq who the Pistons have already shown they can stop. DWade needs to up his already unbelievable playoff performance to have a chance.
