  1. It 8 miles from my house! Im in Huntingdon Valley. This moving away from detroit is really helping me out. Ill definitely try to check it out.
  2. Any reccomendations for some good 'out' music? I need to fulfill my BMG membership, but there is a ton that I REALLY want. I already have all the Cecil, Ornette stuff on there.
  3. I onced worked with a guy whose favorites jazz trumpet players were Wynton Marsalis and Arturo Sandoval. You can just imagine the implications of that. Oh, and he wasnt too fond of Miles or Charlie Parker.
  4. thanks for all the input, im sure you guys will keep me busy for a loooooong time.
  5. Another interesting with the new ipods is that they can now store lyrics (or basically a large amount of text.) What this means for jazz is we can now get a time where session info for each track can be viewed on the ipod. Eventually, hard copy cd's will be gone, and this new little trick will be great. Now I can load a Mosaic on there and still have personnel and recording info with me wherever I go. Unfortunately, I dont have a new ipod yet. And the manufactures dont load that info into the songs downloaded from itunes, but i figure its only a matter of time.
  6. I know this have been done a few times, and I read some of the previous threads, but I'll still ask. I've never really gotten into any classical music, mainly because of the pompousness of much of it (or atleast of the listeners.) For the most part, happy or major classical just isnt doing it for me. So I was wondering if you guys had any reccomendations for dark sounding works by major (but in minor key, if you will) composers. My jazz tastes tend towards the out (not totally free, but stuff like late period trane, sam rivers, ornette etc...) if that helps. Thanks.
  7. People have been telling me that for years. ← Guitar player of course. But I suppose I wasnt entirely inaccurate.
  8. Interstellar Space might just be the greatest music ever recorded. That shit is just plain heavy. Need to try to get through Live in Japan again. Ive listened to it all, but never paying close attention for a full disc, let alone all 4.
  9. A lot of great responses, thanks. Im definitely gonna pick up the Thinking in Jazz book. Anyone care to answer specifically what you are thinking musically? Jazz seems to have an endless array of tricks. Do you guys play alot of licks? Do you approach things modal? How many scales do you use? How did you get comfortable playing certain scales or licks? Im comfortable playing modes, but im having trouble with getting used to all the other scales like altered, lydian dominant, bebop and doing it comfortably. Especially when I know Im not supposed to think about them when Im playing. Lastly, anyone know what the hell Eric Dolphy is thinking?
  10. get them for free on www.dimeadozen.org usually they have a few miles videos posted.
  11. Even after awhile that sentance stopped me in my tracks as I immediately thought "what about elvin?" Then it clicked in. Again. Trane was dead nearly 25 years before I was born, but I can still picture Elvin smilin on the bandstand. Im looking forward to hearing the Half Note cd though.
  12. Thelonious Sphere Monk is not only the coolest jazz name, or musician name, but actually the coolest name ever. Close second goes to former Lion and current dolphin Stockar McDougle.

  14. Well, after about 2 years off, due to the constraints of college, I'm finally getting back into learning jazz. Ive always played alot, and I teach alot, but I haven't been practicing alot, if you know what I mean. A problem I'm having now is how to get past the mechanics of playing into really playing. I know my modes and scales and chords and arpeggios, but I find it impossible not to think about them while playing. So for those of you who are advanced, do you still think about note choices when you play? How do you approach new tunes? Can you play a newer tune without thinking about notes and scales while you play? Another problem is that I am guitar problem. All these scale patterns have ruined me, and constantly find myself playing patterns and not music. But I still cant think quick enough to focus on just chord tones or whatever else. I know how I approach blues, and that is so much more simple, and I dont think about root notes of scales at all when I play, is that what advanced players do when playing jazz? I find the complexity of it almost suffocating. With all the options available, what goes on in one's brain when tackling hard tunes? Hopefully this makes some sense, I have a feeling alot of jazz musicians have gone through what I;m going through. Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.
  15. Arrested Development Season 2 is coming out tomorrow and I cant wait. I missed alot of episodes with the busiest year of my life last year. Absolutely brilliant show, definitely the smartest show on network TV. (which is admittedly not super high priase.) Get Season 1 today if you havent seen it yet.
  16. Isnt about half of Places solo pieces? And then, maybe starting with anything goes (and largo) he is abndoning the art of the trio moniker. makes sense to me.

    Phish Corner

There is something about a pot and and kettle here. As for fave Phish compostiion, I love Stash. A nifty little chord progression with trey modulaing into dorian for much of the solo. But all of those "jam' songs like Antelope, YEM and others really are tremendous compositions. Not really traditionaly songwriters, but much more in a prog rock vein, especially on the first album, Junta.

    Phish Corner

This thread is not nearly as stupid as you are condescending. If you have nothing to say, feel free not to say it. This thread belongs here as much as any other music thread does. Clealry you are trying to insinuate Phish is somehow less than the 'masterful' Dead, and you can have that opinion. But you are dead wrong in my eyes (pun intended.) Greateful Dead are no Miles, and Phish are no Wallace Roney. Again, lets get back to talking about the merits of the bands, not degrading them. Glad to hear I sparked a little interest with some of you. Im gonna go listen to their final show again in a few minutes. Not their best stuff, but definitely some emotional moments and some great playing (especially from the three non-Try members.)
  19. I suppose i should give an update. I went with Sennheiser mx-500. nice headphones, better than the ipod buds for sure. They can still hurt my ears a bit with extended usage, but for 15 bucks they were a great purchase. Im gonna upgrade again eventually, but im sorta afraid to get sucked down the audiophile rabbit hole. (atleast until i have a full tiem job and my girlfriend is out of grad school.) But anyone who wants a cheap upgrade, those sennheisers were a very very good purchase. plus they arent awful white.

    Phish Corner

Its interesting how the responses tend to be fairly similar. I got into Phish hugh in the summer of 2000, and only saw them live once. I have a good 30 or so shows, and some weeks I can go without listening to them all, and some weeks I can listen only too Phish. The first time I heard a live version of Run Like an Antelop I was absolutely hooked. I thought their ability to continually build the tension in a song for a long times up into one giant Trey stinging note was unbelievable. I want to shy away from the Dead comparisons as well, but I dont think ANYONE has ever been able to build up a song as well as they could. Trey is no Jerry, but Jerry surely is no Trey. Maybe Ill fall out of loved with them as well, but I doubt it. I listened to a tasty Divided Sky today that was enough to make my week.

Interesting take on it. But very off base as far as "the older you are the stupider they are." Quality music knows no bounds. And quirkiness sure as hell doesnt scare people away from Frank Zappa. I will agree that Livephis doesnt make the best choices, mainly because they have primarily released the current post 2000 stuff, which is definitely substandard. But the phish live releases that made the stores have been uniformly excellent music. And I am perfectly aware that many people on this board are before Phish's time, which is why I borught them up. There is alot of amazing music that they have created, and fans of jam bands will likely find something they enjoy in Phish. They are incredibly tight (pre-2000) with musicians that far outrank any Grateful Dead members.

By new generation I mean post Dead. If a defunct Dead (or atleast mostly defunct) can get 29 pages, I think Phish merits some discussion. And I agree, the only really comparison for the bands is how their fans approach their music. Obsessing over diferent versions of songs and different eras, and almost always collecting full shows. If you are unfamiliar with Phish, try checking out some live stuff between 92-98ish. Fantastic stuff. livephish.com has internet radio station playing some great stuff usually.
  23. try burning a copy, and then loading that into itunes. or try following this: http://blogcritics.org/archives/2005/09/22/013800.php The band Switchfoot actually wrote on their website how to break the copy protection the record company put on their cd.
  24. Jack is cheap imitation whiskey. Good in coke, but worthless otherwise. My martini preference will be absolutely scandalous to you people. I like Three Olives chocolate vodka, with a maraschino cherry and a splash of grenadine or maraschino cherry juice. Chocolate Cherry Martini! The drink of the gods (or atleast those REALLY comfortable with their sexuality.)
