I was wondering what you guys thought of making CD-R copies or downloading long OOP Mosaics which simply arent available on CD anywhere. One of the programs I use to download (for sampling and because it can be faster than finding and ripping a CD to my HD) occasionally has Mosaics available. Its pretty damn hard to resist downloading sets like the Complete Andrew Hill Blue Note especially when I know I cant hear some of that stuff anywhere else. Opinions?

Agreed. the jazz community could easy turn into something like the Jam band community. Bands like the Dead and Phish have benefitted immeasurably from tape trading. It also seriosuly stimulates concert attendance, which is the most importance thing for jazz artists anyways. A very narrow concept of ownership has blinded people to market realities that trading presents. Its like people fighting against the radio because it distributes music for free.

Im still surprised this is going. Maybe we should have a poll stating whether Stevie Wonder is indeed a musical genius. Of course, we know how the would turn out. But seriously, I would LOVE some expanded double disc editions of Talking Book, Innervisions and other reacords of that era. Maybe they can throw some live stuff on there. I don't see what the color of her skin has to do with it. Should white singers who sing soul NOT go into show biz because they MIGHT become more successful than worthy black singers? Should Elvis Presley have continued driving a truck because he MIGHT overshadow Big Mama Thorton or Junior Parker? If white singers get privilidged over black singers, its our culture's problem, not the singer's. I agree completely. Im just saying the reason why we hear about her is the supposed novelty of a white soul singer, when many other sould singers of a later age or of a different skin color are being overlooked and one's money can be better spent on them. Well the lady friend is going to Optometry school in NYC or Philly and I get the job of supporting her (which is fine because once shes out I get her money :-)) I have been guranteed a teaching job in Manhattan or Brooklyn, I'll make about 39000. So can I live off that in Manhattan (I already plan on being poor)? Should I go to NYC? Is it possible to resist the jazz clubs? A friend suggested living in Hoboken, how is that? Simply put, if she was black she would not be famous. If she was over 30 she would not be famous. She is a pretender. She COULD be a good singer, but you can tell she simply is not there yet. reminds of when Keeny Wayne Shepard was such a big deal in the blues world. Almost always, kids dont have soul. Soul comes from wisdom, wisom comes from age. And yes, I was VERY impressed when I first heard her. But it wore off quickly. You are MUCH better off picking up another aretha album.
