CD's/Albums of studio or live performaces?
md655321 replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Obviously there is something special live that just can not be captured in the studio, but the sheer voume of studio albums over quality live albums effects this poll. Plus, the clarity of presentation for studio work is also important. Especially when we get new compositions. Live 60s Miles is undoubtedly phenomenal, but its also nice to hear the studio stuff, and the newness of it. Live Trane is amazing as well, but there is something about the directness and clarity of the studio albums that makes for and easier listen and makes it a bit more accessible. The live recordings are for when you get past the studio ones. The live stuff is better, but the studio is still neccessary. Sorta like Godfather Two compared to the first. -
With all the Kenny G, Spice Girls and Britney Spears albums that have come out in the last 25 years, I think we're taking this a bit far. Sadly, I'm not. MAybe I'll watch the doc tonight though. I'm sure it will be interesting.

I'm gonna have to disagree and say that St. Anger is, and this is not hyperbole here, the worst album of the past 25 years. It is embarrasing, lyrically, musically, and sonically. It is a sham perpetrated on the people. And honest it is not. It is pretend music as they try to prove they can still rock to their more intelligent fans who deserted them long ago. Unfortunately, they do not rock at all. I still sorta want to see the movie though.

Ive only been using the site for two weeks, but im glad i did. I already have a respectable Miles 67 collection! The lawyers and their businesses are incredibly stupid. This is all material that is not available to purchase. And most of it never will be. All it does is energize a customer base. Which, is a very very god thing for business. Keep us updated on new sites. Anyone else know of a place for good jazz downloads?

How did those "chumpions" do against the Lakers last year? So much hate for Detroit. They completel dismantle a team with 4 hall of famers, and now they are about to get their 4th straight 50 win season. But they are still chumps? I guarantee not a single team wants to play the pistons in the playoffs. And you will see them beat miami in the ECF.

Oscar Peterson – why did those greats disliked him
md655321 replied to Alon Marcus's topic in Artists
Speaking of Blindfold tests, a few years ago my lady friend photocopied every blindfold test from 1950 to 1980 for me for Christmas. Needless to say, I'm marrying her. But if anyone gets a specific question on a blindfold test of any artist, i can look it up pretty easily. Its very interesting to see who knows what they are talking about and who doesnt. Especially with the new music that was being blasted (like early opinions on trane and ornette.) The Bill Evans ones are usually fantastic, he can recgonize anything, and he usually goes into a bit of detail harmonically as well. Very impressive. -
I pretty much agree with what has been said. Anyone who has the opportunity should go see him live. Tremendous energy, and usual some amazing sax and drums duets. Good discs for the most, although he's gotten a bit smooth recently.

I bought it because of the presence of Jason Moran and DeJohnette. I like it alot. Its my first Byron disc and although im not overwhelmed, I do enjoy it.

I love Floyd. They had a stretch of Meddle through The Wall of absolutely brilliant albums. The latest (albeit a decade old by now) The Division Bell is excellent as well.

I just received the box from yourmusic (42 bucks because it is 7 cds) and its great. Most of the chronological boxes are annoying, because its usually better to have an actual album. But because the majority of the box (5 1/2 discs) is live this doesnt really matter. Great stuff. I love the Tokyo stuff. I'm also partial to Sam Rivers though.

There is a difference between recognizing what you dont like and dismissing music which you know nothing about. If you like music, and I imagine that all of us do, you are doing yourself a terrible disservice to avoid entire genres based on limited exposure. Additionally, it serves no purpose to say that the music makes you "nauseous." Thats fine if it does, but there is no reason to post in this thread then.
-
So you cant name any bands and you dont see any creativity there (which clearly means you havent listened to enough of the music) but you still feel the need to say this music makes you feel nauseous? There are no bad genres of music and it always quite dangerous for any music fan to simply dismiss that which they clearly know very little about. Go buy some Wilco or some Radiohead. It might do you some good.

One absolutely fantastic CD from last year is Arcade Fire - Funeral. Sorta iniesh lo-fi rock, but with delusions of grandeur. Its fantastic. Personally, I think rock music is better now than at any other time since 1970. I will second the previous mentions of Death Cab for Cutire and Postal Service. Other great bands from the last decade or so: Mars Volta Sparta The Waifs The Shins Iron and Wine Ben Harper John Butler Trio Wilco Flaming Lips Radiohead (of course) Jack Johnson Jeff Buckley Damien Rice Muse Modest Mouse Polyphonic Spree

Recently added, or at least I just noticed, Pi Recrodings, including some fantastic stuff by Henry Threadgill and Vijay Iyer. Also some Leo Smith and Art Ensemble which I am not familiar with. I might get "The Meeting" by AEC, any thoughts on that?

This is one of the reasons I like occasionally downloading music. Once I buy a complete version of something and they add more, I just burn the second disc, or added tracks. That isnt stealing when I paid for the complete recordings in the first place.
-
Personally I much prefer the Impulse box, though I wish I had the actual albums as opposed to the box. And its been annying trying to re-complete the complete box. But I believe the music as a whole is superior. If you havent order the boxes yet, they are both available on www.yourmusic.com for 5.99 a disc, no shipping charges. So you can get the VV for 24 bucks, compared to 50 at amazon.

Great album. I dont have much more techno jazz, although the last few Matthew Shipp records might apply. Optometry by DJ Spooky is also good.

Damn you and your 4.99!

I must say, its quite odd someone posts about the place I am in right now. And I'm not talking close to Troy, I mean last 23 years of my life sitting in Troy right now. Here is the good news, you wont have travel much because there isnt anything good in the Troy, MI area. Nothing. Best place for jazz is Borders Music, after that its nothing but boring everyday suburbia. The only thing that comes close is probably Flipside Records in Clawson MI about 10 minutes from Troy, they have some vinyl. But nothing exciting. If you want to drive 30-40 minutes, the best place in the area is Car City Records. But I havent been there in awhile, so I cant make any gurantees now. Here is a mapquest: http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.ad...I&2z=48080-2218

I know this has been covered somewhat on the emusic thread, so I apologize for the redundancy. However, I just rejoined emusic to re-download the stuff from the unlimitied days (having just found out that was possible) so I know have 24 songs remaining. I want one or two song albums (I splurged on the 10 track Fred Hersch plus 2, and boy am I glad I did!) So, im looking to get some Marilyn Crispell, Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, and any other of the various out music on there. Any suggestions for good albums with minimal tracks? I have already downloaded Braxtons London (Quartet) 1985 and Evan Parker's 50th birthday concert. The Parker is magnificent. Thanks

I think they have to think about bandwidth limitations as well. By allowing a certain amount per month per user they are better able to foresee costs and minimize problems. Its like cable tv. If ou go on vacation, you sitll pay for it. I remember when emusic announced it was goinglimit downloads. I spent every downloading as much as I could, and Im sure others did as well. As a result, it was very buggy with alot of errors. But I still got my Bill Evans boxed sets!

Strange Liberation is probably the most straight ahead jazz of the three, but that isnt saying much. Its a very good disc with a great band. A Thousand Evenings is a very laid back, with an accordion player on every track. Its a god disc, but its not that jazzy. Freeak In, wel, the title explains that. All the discs are adventurous, just in their own way. I dont have Soul on Soul, but Im guessing it is more like Strange Liberation than the others are. P.S. I would just buy all 3.

Nope. But you can cancel your "membership" immediately if you would like, and not have to order anything after that.
