    Phish Corner

By new generation I mean post Dead. If a defunct Dead (or atleast mostly defunct) can get 29 pages, I think Phish merits some discussion. And I agree, the only really comparison for the bands is how their fans approach their music. Obsessing over diferent versions of songs and different eras, and almost always collecting full shows. If you are unfamiliar with Phish, try checking out some live stuff between 92-98ish. Fantastic stuff. livephish.com has internet radio station playing some great stuff usually.
  2. try burning a copy, and then loading that into itunes. or try following this: http://blogcritics.org/archives/2005/09/22/013800.php The band Switchfoot actually wrote on their website how to break the copy protection the record company put on their cd.
  3. Jack is cheap imitation whiskey. Good in coke, but worthless otherwise. My martini preference will be absolutely scandalous to you people. I like Three Olives chocolate vodka, with a maraschino cherry and a splash of grenadine or maraschino cherry juice. Chocolate Cherry Martini! The drink of the gods (or atleast those REALLY comfortable with their sexuality.)
  4. Havent heard Happy Apple yet buy I love the Bad Plus.

    Phish Corner

With the Grateful Dead thread at 29 pages, I figure the new generation of jammers deserve some respect. As much as I love the dead, they really can't touch Phish as far as sheer musicianship (and I would argue creativity) goes. I think Phih's quirky songwriting tends to throw alot of people off, but their live shows are fantastic. Their musical empathy with each other comes closer to jazz than anyone else in the rock world. So anyone else agree?
  6. I think Trane provides the overall thrust of influence and desire to play, while people like Sonny and Joe fill in the nuances of peoples playing. Sorta like Hendrix for guitar players. Every guitar player knows Hendrix is our daddy, and we use everyone else to fill in the cracks.
  7. Anyone paying close enough attention to examine two takes in a row is paying close enough attention to flip tracks around. Put them at the end.
  8. I was a Blue Noter as well, although towards the end. I probably only posted for a few months before it closed 'temporarily' for good. For awhile I went to AAJ, but people kept mentioning Organissimo. The traffic here, and the quality of opinions, is no contest compared to AAJ. Glad to get my jazz jones when Im usually surrounded by people in real life who may have heard of Miles Davis.
  9. Im sure a few sets have made it out there through pomotion and review copies. It has already been available online (through P2P programs) for weeks. I hope this gets released. The music is phenomenal. As I never had Live-Evil this is quite an awakening for me.
  10. Ive been in Philly for a couple months now and i love it. Of course, anything is upgrade from detroit. The downtown area is very nice with tons to do. Very beautiful. And the cheesesteaks, my god the cheesesteaks.....
  11. I was amazed to see Best Buy, a severely jazz deficient store, had about 5 copies when i went. Thats ambition. I didnt pick it up yet though. Start a new job tomorrow so i will get it next week.

    iPod nano

The battery issues on ipod have been way overblown and are pretty much a non-issue with the new ones. You have a 14 hour battery life, and that should last a couple years. Eventually itll wear down to around 5 or 6 hours, but at that point you will be WELL overdue for an upgrade anyways.
  13. Anyone know when or where All of You (take 1) was released? Only that take and the Gloria's step werent released Waltz for Debby or Sunday at the VV. Which makes me wonder why this needed to be 3 cds. Did they add applause and announcements to justify the third disc?
  14. No, they are fantastic as well. But the studio Seven Steps stuff is just ok (in relative terms of course) and the Berlin stuff doesnt quite blow me away. Maybe I just knew what was to come.
  15. I love this record dearly. Mostly because it was my first Jarrett and I played the hell out of it. A dozen solo records later it doesnt have the same impact, but its still very good. Vienna is still my favorite solo, with Bremen and Lausanne up there. Anyone like Radiance? Ive only heard a little bit of it so far.
  16. 1. Second Quintet 2. Coltrane 3. Prestige (dont have the box, just the material) 4. Plugged Nickel 5. BB 6. Jack Johnson 7. IASW 8. Gil Evans (no box, but the single cds w/ alternates) 9. Seven Steps 10. Blackhawk (just not in the same league) hard to rank though. The Jack Johnson album from the box is enough to put it 2nd or third, but the box as a whole isnt as great. When cellar door is released, itll probably number 5 or 6. Looking at that, seven steps seems way to low. But again, as a whole its not amazing. But the set with sam rivers is fantastic.
  17. I've seen that one, I'm just out in the burbs a bit and there aren't many in the immediate area. I can't see driving into the city to get 30% off on a cd. Back in the michigan burbs there were huge borders every twenty feet or so. It spoiled me. How is 15% nickel and diming? its sure better than 0%.
  18. I concur. Unfortuantely, out in Philly there seems to be a serious Borders shortage.
  19. My problem isnt that Tony isnt really jazz, but the fact that he already has more than enough money. With all the poor jazz musicians, they could have picked a better recipient.
  20. Im pretty sure im gonna order the mx-500 soon. right now i dont exactly have audiophile ears anywayss, and im sorta scared to develop good ears. but these head phones seem very nice for ear buds and VERY nice for the money. thanks for the suggestions.
  21. Moss with Moss's work ethic is unstoppable.
  22. oh, i already have two iguy's. i just want a regular case now.
  23. does yours collect alot of dirt? ive heard alot of complaints, and mine would certainly be exposed to alot of dirt and lint.

    ipod cases

any recomendations for a good case? Im thinking of getting the conour isee hard plastic case. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...KX0DER&v=glance I figured i wouldnt need a case, but after having an ipod for 2 weeks i realize that isnt a good decision. p.s. Im going with the senheiser mx-500 for headphones.
  25. Another reccomendation for the Joe. Can you even go wrong with live Joe Henderson?
