    Ben Webster

https://www.discogs.com/Ben-Webster-Ben-At-His-Best/release/4124993 For the guy asking about Bens LP for the grocery store – Ben Op Zijn Best the above is a French reissue of the same LP that can be bought very cheaply. It’s a really good LP....in the book on Ben’s life it’s described as the best Ben LP you don’t already own.
  2. Any news of whether this will be released on vinyl?
  3. Fully agree with everyone about Tokyo and Last Great Concert but also a big fan of the Chet Baker and Ake Johansson Trio Lp. In regards to Chet books the best has to be Matthew Ruddicks Funny Valentine a perfect mix of Chet's lifestyle and the music results from it...also a great discography http://www.funnyvalentine.org/funnyvalentine.org/Discography,_Part_1.html The worst Chet book award just has to go to Angel Wings truly appalling don't even bother attempting it.
  4. More shops this time in North London....first Alans Records in East Finchley, then Flashback in Crouch End and the Little Record Shop (right next to Konk studios home of the Kinks) also loads of vinyl in Audio Gold between Muswell Hill and Crouch End.....that little lot should keep you going for a bit...
  5. Thanks for posting the YouTube link it was great to watch, alongside all the factual books there's also Bill Moody's novel http://www.jerryjazzmusician.com/2002/04/bill-moody-author-of-looking-for-chet-baker/ which is a great read if you love jazz and detectives
  6. This is a whole new scene to me but wouldn't Cannonball's "Mercy Mercy Me" and The Jazz Crusaders journey from Jazz to Funk feature fairly largely in the story of Soul Jazz?
  7. Do you have a link to the EBay sale as I couldn't find any results when I searched earlier for the LP? Thanks for the reply Do you have a link to the EBay sale as I couldn't find any results when I searched earlier for the LP? Thanks for the reply
  8. I found yesterday a copy of a 1969 MIchael Garrick LP called "A Jazz Cantato (For Martin Luther King)" it states on the back that it was only sold to Participants, Parents and Friends of the Farnham Festival 1969 so I'm guessing this was a private label release but if anyone has any further information I would be most grateful. Here's the front cover And the back cover As you can see it also features Ian Carr & Dan Rendell so a pretty impressive line up.
  9. Well worth a read if you want to find out even more about Art Peeper's amazing life, after reading Straight Life this gives a completely different perspective of the events in Arts life and for me its makes Art's music seem even more incredible when you read about the conditions it was recorded under. Laurie has done an amazing job with the book and its complete honesty may prove shocking to some people. The only thing I wish is that a bit more effort had been taken in reproducing the photos as their reproduction in the book is not great (maybe something that can be fixed in future editions)
  10. Surely the money kept rolling in from abroad, I'm sure the Japanese market alone (120 million people) would have been able to keep it afloat as Jazz on Vinyl is a much more mainstream interest than it ever was in the US or Europe.
  11. Please let us know if it turns up, but somehow I doubt it a book like this when its published would generate a lot of press attention and so far I've seen nothing so fingers crossed & I'm proved wrong.
  12. If you need any advice on setting up your turntable try this site it gives good straight forward advice & has plenty of pictures to explain everything http://www.soundfountain.com/amb/ttadjust.html Then just take it slow & steady and you will have a great sounding deck.
  13. There's been a real revolution in book publishing with the advent of ebooks/kindle you can just do it yourself without the problems of trying to interest a publisher (the setup costs are very low so even with few sales money can be made). But jazz is a world wide interest and in some areas (Japan for instance is still fairly mainstream with a cover mount Blue Note magazine being advertised on TV last year)so you have a whole world to potentially sell the book to and I know for one I would love a book of jazz stars in Paris through the 50/60's) So come on Brownie back down into the cellar for you & get digging the world awaits!
  14. I was wondering what the sound quality is like on these CD's, is it up to the official Columbia stuff like Carnegie Hall, Miles In Berlin etc? I guess different dates will vary but in general is this something a fairly interested fan would like, or is it a listen to it once only for completists job?

    Art Pepper

I recently managed to pick up both the Mole Jazz Lp's and love them, so its great to hear the views of people who were actually there on the night....if you have any more recollections please keep them coming!!
  16. Sorry I haven't ever seen a copy of Downbeat to know what one would look like coming from the UK and being relatively young! So does that make it the only major interview that Hank ever did, or are there more out there to track down?
  17. Thanks for the great interview posting that's the first actual interview I have ever seen of Hank's, isn't there supposed to be one from one of the classic jazz magazines like Down Beat as well if anyone could post a copy of Hank's other interviews that would be really kind.
  18. I think Hank's appeal apart from the obviously great music is that for people both new to jazz like myself & for established listeners is its relatively easy to follow Hank's career as a leader & side man across a broad range of great sounding Blue Note LP's.. Plus even with the Internet there's still a fair amount of mystery about him (just try looking for some video footage of him) rather than the over analysed work of Miles & Coltrane which sparks curiosity in fans. In regards to self publishing I don't think it takes any advance money to put up books on the kindle platform rather its a fee per book download. There was a recent article about the 1st millionaire author on amazon recently which explains the process http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20110620005891/en/John-Locke-Independently-Published-Author-Join-%E2%80%9CKindle
  19. To Chewy if you are interested in writing a book on Hank why not self publish it as an ebook or as Kindle download. I can't imagine that many traditional publishers would be that interested (but the other book found a publisher so who knows) but going down the DIY route might make sense and I'm sure by posting about it on the various jazz blogs out there you could drum up enough worldwide interest to sell a good few copies. The Internet has changed a lot of the ways things are done and your idea would be of a huge importance to a surprisingly large number of Mobley out there. So please get typing........
  20. Yes that's what I thought but that page has been up for years with no change to the "Currently Not Available" box on the right of the page, so I don't think this has been ever released (also why no reviews anywhere of the book or listing on any other book selling sites). Anybody else know anything about what's happened to what we can only imagine would be a very interesting book?
  21. Just realised that its been another two years since I posted this but still no book, at one time I even saw on the publishers website a mock up of the cover art (it looked unsurprisingly considering the title like Cannonball's album art) Anyone here have any idea whatever happened to this book?

    Amps

If your in London, I would recommend AudioGold in Crouch End, its a very friendly place that specializes in second hand stuff turntables, amps, speakers etc. and even has a record store with a good selection of jazz as a bonus. I have bought virtually all my gear from them as they take time & allow you to listen to whatever you fancy for as long as you like with the only pressure being if you fancy another of their very fine coffees or not. http://audiogold.co.uk/ I am sure they could advise you on something suitable and might be even interested in your Quad stuff for exchange.
  23. This is my Muse LP version that I bought just before going to see Barry Harris a couple of weeks ago (he's still got it) http://s787.photobucket.com/albums/yy154/MokoMilk/?action=view&current=IMG-20110918-00451.jpg http://s787.photobucket.com/albums/yy154/MokoMilk/?action=view&current=IMG-20110918-00452.jpg I hope that helps
  24. I've picked up a couple of Gene Ammon's lately and absolutely love them,I have finally found someone to take over from my Ike Quebec obsession. I bought a prestige reissue of UpTight which sounds great, but is completely blown away by Boss Tenor which is an Alto-Edition AE/002 and has a limited edition serial number on it, the Prestige no is 7180. The Alto-Edition is possibly the best sounding record in my collection does anyone know of what else was released in this series, and where they can be found? Also any more Gene recommendations would be much appreciated
  25. It's always funny when the labels complain about illegal downloading and then attempt to dodge paying the tiny amount of royalties they are legally obliged to pay artists. I think as a business model especially if like the Jazz labels of 50's/60's you paid the artists $50 each to record an album, then if you haven't made your money back in nearly 50 years you should maybe try some other way to earn a living and stop complaining. As always rather like banks record companies think they have a right to win even when they make huge mistakes. I feel for artists like fasstrack in these days of computer accounting there is no real reason why they should be unable to receive all the monies they rightfully deserve. If you've done the work then you should get paid the correct amount for it.
