  1. There has been a 1950's Morgan set on Mosaic - a 1960's studio set would be comparable to the 1960's Mobley set. Hancock and Gordon have been covered in complete long box sets on Blue Note. Silver was covered only in a career survey - a complete set would be huge and would have to be divided in three or four parts. Frankly, I am surprised by that Mobley set, although I see Cuscuna's point and know he's a big Mobley fan. The Blue Note catalogue has been milked to the last drops, eh?
  2. R.I.P. He was a very important figure, bringing a rational clarity to the music that was a refreshing counterpoint to the over-romantic orchestral approach favored at the time, and brought a different approach to Mahler and Bruckner, Any of his recordings with the SWR Orchestra are worth hearing.
  3. Genial Clare Fischer arrangements!
  4. Several Lonehill and Gambit issues were copped by other PD labels, Solar, Essential Jazz Classics, etc.
  5. Try Scotch tape, gently press it on and pull it back, several times. no guuarantee, but it always worked when I applied it.
  6. Only possible problem: There are some copies with some CDs sticking to the cardbord slipcase housing fo the discs due to some excess glue getting into the wrong places - that's why they sold large quantities at a sellout price only months after it was released. In my copy two discs were sticking to the cardboard - I carefully took them out and was able to remove the glue residues from the discs with Scotch tape - they play back without problems. Inspect the set caarefully when you buy a copy.
  7. Gheorge is spot on with his comments - I have all these LPs and they are great additions to any bebop collection!
  8. R.I.P. Yes he was very popular for a long period of time, but in the 80's all Play Bach LPs were out of print and it was a mild sensation when Zweitausendeins released a five LP box with these albums. I got me a copy but it didn't really fascinate me as I already was deeply involved in period instrument performances of Bach's music. Now is there any album where he play just jazz, no Bach or other baroque music?
  9. Of all "classical" musicians trying themselves at jazz he was the best, IMO - well, if you can label him "classical", that is. His swing was natural, and that is the most important part of it. He was an all-round musician, period. R.I.P.
  10. Good enough an excuse to go hunting! There is one copy of the LP offerered on discogs, but the price asked for is 200 bucks ...... https://www.discogs.com/Joe-Henderson-Hendersons-Habiliment/release/8960668
  11. https://www.amazon.com/His-Musical-Autobiography-KING-COLE/dp/B00ZGUI6BE/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=B00ZGUI6BE&qid=1551907503&s=music&sr=1-1 It's a 12 disc set on Universal, released in 2015. The amazon tracklist is messed up, they list discs 10-12 first (a CD with unissued takes and two DVDs with a documentary and a live show from Australia; the actual disc 1 comes as 4 etc. As an overview of his career for the non-completist it is excellent, you can expand on it any time with single CDs. It comes with a hardback book containing a career survey and full discographical details.
  12. Nat King Cole: His Musical Autobiography
  13. So there really are five tracks, and neither the OJC team when they did the reissue CD nor Keepnews when he prepared the box had any clue. The people who maintain the Lord Disco don't have, either - though I admit that they cannot know and listen to everything they list, I wonder what their source for their information was - or it simply was an assumption. That's why I never completely trust any discographical source in the internet, except for those hosted on jazzdiscography.com - and even there you might find minor errors. Serious discographical research is an unforgiving beast. The only guarantee is to get the record and listen yourself.
