  1. Lou Blackburn and Carmell Jones were old friends from their California days and both living Berlin at the time. I guess Jones' job in the Berlin Radio orchestra kept him from touring with Mombasa any earlier. I remember Tom Nicholas confirming Mombasa having plenty of gigs - Blackburn's wife was their agent, and kept them on the road - "sometimes too much", as I recall Tom*s words.
  2. I saw Mombasa perform every year as long as they existed - in 1977 Doug Lucas still was the trumpet player. Next was a guy whose name I didn't recognize - there's only a "?" in my notes. Next was Ambrose Jackson, and after him, Carmell Jones.
  3. Excellent playing and some of the best commerntay I have read about Cabezón and his music.
  4. My sincere condolences. I always enjoyed his playing whenever I heard him.
  5. CHÂTEAU DE JAU 2017 Côtes du Roussillon-Villages Somewhat disappointing. Nice for accompanying a dinner, but too weak as a standalone drink. Made from Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache grapes - I prefer Carignan as a base
  6. I left a lot of money at the Cologne store the few times I was there. The Frankfurt branch was good, too, as the jazz department was run by a real fan. He let collectors like me reserve LPs on a shelf back in his office. Bad for my bank account .....
  7. Currently re-listening to a lot of Cal Tjader for the revisions of the disco for the upcoming second edition of S. Duncam Reid's biography.
  8. Bodegas Piedemonte MOSCATEL, NAVARRA DO, 2015
  9. R.I.P. for an undiluted João Gilberto experience, I warmly recommend his Montreux album:

Thanks! I have the Muse CD, but will have to listen again tomorrow before giving a judgement.

Thanks - just ordered a copy! Saw Cox in a David Murray group many years ago, liked his big sound and rhythmic clarity. I love those two CDs on MInor Music! Has anybody heard his solo bass CD?

  13. I got the only copy of the CD with Kimball on discogs for about the same prize, didn't look on amazon.com. On amazon.de it was too expensive.
  14. There was an EGREM compilation CD, but it is long oop. You probably searched discogs. I don't know of any CDs on Palladium or Tumbao.
  15. Turns out I have a download of Tori on some hard drive. I'll get a a copy of a future CD reissue, anyway. This is a 1997 CD of improvised duets with pianist Richard Kimball. They never get atonal, stay free of clichés and superficial free music patterns, still make an impression of totally free improvisation. Recommended. But hard to find ..... https://www.discogs.com/Lloyd-McNeill-Richard-Kimball-XTemPorE/release/7574714
  16. Lovely, totally improvised music, never leaving tonal centers, but cliché-free. recommended for all McNeill fans.
  17. If you consider Art Pepper, Hampton Hawes' "Raise up off me" might be of interest to you, too. Not as elaborate, but frank and with many inside views of the scene.
  18. What we have is: Off Minor - Roost, January 10, 1947 'Round Midnight - Norgran, December 16, 1954 Epistrophy - Verve, January 13, 1955 album "A Portrait of Thelonious" - French Columbia, December 17, 1961 some more Monk tunes are on the various live recordings after 1962.
  19. From a bebop pianistic point of view, I think Bud may have been the ideal interpreter of Monk's music. I can't think of more convincing versions of the Monk tunes Bud recorded. Blue Note or another label should have suggested a "Bud Plays Monk" album, like the posthumously issued "Bud Plays Bird".
  20. Chris Albertson's book on Bessie Smith is on my reading list for vacation later this year.
  21. It's also part of the Sal Nistico Fresh Sound twofer combined with his two Riverside LPs: https://www.freshsoundrecords.com/sal-nistico-albums/5823-sal-nistico-quintets-3-lps-on-2-cds.html?search_query=nistico&results=8
  22. JPC has a Passacaille label sellout:
  23. An overwhelming list, as always. I'm in already. The old recordings from the beginning of the 20th century fascinate me more and more.
