  1. Agreed - but Mrs. Phillips was a totally different type of singer that fit much better into the CTI sound. Got me Esther Phillips' two Atlantic albums last year and like them a lot. Now listening tp Hazel Scott: (from the Mingus Debut box set)
  2. It hurts to hear Mrs. Simone mis-produced in such a bland fashion ...
  3. The Roulette CD reissue with 11 (!) bonus tracks. p.s. what she does with the tunes from the standard jazz song book is amazing, very different from the way jazz singers and instrumentalists approch these tunes. She was one of a kind.

Money may be a game to many, but its consequences are way too serious for many people to let the game go on like this. We are going to face the same sittuation over here, actually many people already are. A percussionist colleague of mine in Munich just lost her loft where she lived and taught and practised, and it will ruin her existence if she doesn't find another place. I switched to a day job as music will not yield enough income, especially for a character like me who hates to compromise. Everything "culture" that costs more than it earns is considered a luxury or taken for granted by most. A game is fine as long as you have the choice to participate or not, but if a whole world is subjected to that game, where is your choice? Live or die? Welfare, charity? (Sorry for the political overtone of this post, but music and its circumstances are political just as everything in the world.)
  5. " Apatow’s interest in the label isn’t random: he is the grandson of Bob Shad, a pioneering jazz producer of the 1940s, who founded Mainstream in ‘64." (From the link BFrank posted above.)
  6. Of course I heard Coltrane's Impressions and So What first, but after I had heard Gould's, Lunceford's, and Jamal's recordings, it was all evident, considering the chronology of things. Will dig out the Rocky Boyd tomorrow. Would love to hear that unissued Coltrane recording.
  7. That Savoy album is sadly missing in my collection - it's worth getting for the cover alone! Well, six LP sides of Honkers was enough, now for a change of pace:
  8. It took me more than 30 years to find a copy of this LP, the only reissue of all 16 sides Arnett Cobb recorded for Okeh 1950-1951. To make my collector's luck complete it was unexpensive, and is in good condition. I wonder why Chronological Classics never reissued these; there are four more for Okeh from 1952 and six for Mercury, then eight for Atlantic, two of which are probably lost. Enough for another volume ....The Apollo sides cut before are all on a Delmark CD as well as on the Classics CD, but both these issues have a session the other CD has not, so completists need both.
  9. Is there a website about that series? I need to know more ....
  10. Gegé Telesforo - We Couldn't Be Happier
  11. I have a surplus copy of a Japanese CD reissue of that album looking for a new home ... pm me if interested.
  12. Nina Simone day, the volume cranked up as my neighbours are out:
  13. Who will take Kenny Barron's place whenever he retires? He's so great ....
  14. I think if they made a remix with the strings more in the background it would fare much better. But I can see your point. To me, some of the mislead 1970's attempts at marketing jazz veterans with a "contemporary" sound (like the Rollins JSngry mentioned), were David Newman's Prestige LPs:
