Read this thread only now ... the whole thing is very moving, I can feel a bit what Allen Lowe felt as I rather often did not know what to do when people I idolized in some way or another turned out to be very human in some respects. I find it hard to accept that beauty and creativity of the highest order often go along with less pleasant personality traits. Is that the human condition? Would there be jazz or any other true art without all the hardships? I dunno .... but I wish there was.

The older I get the more I feel about the music like he does. I can pretty much go along with much of what he said about the recordings played to him.

Very sorry to hear this. I love his playing on those Monk sides - he made an excellent team with Frankie Dunlop. One of the irreplaceables.

I'm with Cuck on that particular Tolliver album - nice but there is better playing by everyone from that era. Plus, the recorded sound is not up to standard, the piano sounds tinny.

R.I.P. I just love his duo album with John Klemmer ....

JLH's standards are high, and so far the only suggestion in this thread worth consideration IMO would be the Ellington A Drum Is A Woman, which really cries out for proper presentation. I had hope for a Mosaic single of this, but ...

So how can I get this after it's out without having backed the project in Kickstarter? BTW I second the King's quality judgement. Really nice the way you keep us informed.

hmmm .... the CD was issued in 1999, but still, I don't hear no bass player but organ bass, left hand, no pedal. Sounds a bit thin, but not a plucked sound of any kind. Maybe this session slipped through the revisions of the disco. Is there a newer edition than 2001?

Just listened to "The Swingin' Shepherd Blues" from the "Six Views of the Blues" CD - there is a bass line, but that's from the B3. Definitely. No mention of a bass player on this Cuscuna produced CD .... I don't have "The Singles" LP any more, but I remember the version there to be identical. Seems Cuscuna corrected himself. The July 16, 1958 session on the CD was recorded with two drummers, Art Blakey on tracks 1-3, Donald Bailey on 4-6 - maybe the files were not clear thus leading to the assumption bassist Bailey was on the session. That bass sound clearly is no acoustic or electric bass but from the organ.

Another interesting question is how they are going to cut the grooves - original mono grooves are wider and require a special stylus/cartridge. I have one, and many audiophiles, too, I suspect, but your average LP buyer? Is there any information on this aspect?

The above album was made for United Artists, not Atlantic, and thus not covered by the Fresh Sound release Brownie linked. This is the link to the respective Fresh Sound reissue. Hagood Hardy was credited for playing electric piano on Mann's Right Now LP for Atlantic, so I guess it should be him.

In this case it wouldn't make much sense, mixing it down to a new mono version. Oh well ..... I have enough Miles in my collection for the rest of my life, anyway.

... or those with one defective speaker ... But seriously, I think most mono recordings from the 1950's sound great, but those Columbia engineers made great stereo sound. They're trying to milk the collectors to the last drop.

A look at the Bitches Brew album credits could have told the interviewer it was Harvey Brooks, not Harvie S. (Swartz) who played electric bass on these sessions ....

I have some obscure German pressed 3 LP box set with moste of these, but I will have to check first. Great Blog!
