  1. Will put on this one while preparing coffee:
  2. Thanks, Brownie - I agree on the sound of those Savoy albums. Sounds like RVG gave his best only for Blue Note ... Hans - in this case I would sell my copy - please PM me with an offer.
  3. Why not ask Doug about it? He now lives and teaches in Linz, Austria, and is doing fine: http://www.doughammond.org/
  4. How's the sound on that Proper Box?
  5. Back to Klook: His debut as a leader were four sides for Swedish Odeon, recorded during a stay of the Edgar Hayes band in Stockholm on March 8, 1938. They were included on the "Special Kenny Clarke" CD of the French EMI Jazz Time series (# 46), and on the second Chronological Classics CD of Edgar Hayes, 1938-1948 - EKE BBB didn't list them as they were under Clarke's name. Kenny Clarke's Kvintett: Henry Goodwin tp; Rudy Powell cl, as; Edgar Hayes p; Eddie Gibbs g; Frank "coco" Darling b; Kenneth S. Clarke xyl, dr; Once In A While / I've Found A New Baby / You're A Sweetheart / Sweet Sue
  6. I'll go for anything with Brew Moore ...
  7. That's what they always say, but I've never seen it happen.
  8. BTW - is there anyone else here who finds the sound on Apogee less than great?
  9. More information now at the Fresh Sound site.
  10. Is there any information about why it was not issued in the first place? Maybe there was an agreement and the tapes handed over to Fruscella or whoever else ... or simply given a copy or a test pressing ...
  11. Thanks, Jim - these are nice, but to re-pack 6000 CDs this is going to get a bit expensive ... I'll rather stop buying new CDs until Xmas.
  12. On the drive home after work I turned on a local radio station, it happened to be jazz hour, and guess which new CD they presented? Best thing the moderator said was that he thought any ideas about Wynton accepting pop from now were off point, as this was a traditional jazz context they collaborated in. But: He thought Clapton played excellent, which I don't get from the samples linked here and I heard on the radio - no spectacular guitar playing. The whole thing sounds so damn controlled, not a bit dirty, as all New Orleans music should sound. I think you can't play Ice Cream and sing and shout in a suit and tie ...
  13. That would be a sign of class, if Universal came around to do a thoroughly compiled and completed reissue of the Cosmic Music session - the last Coltrane studio session not researched before Cuscuna or Ravi Coltrane quit ... I couldn't care less about a 1 to 1 reissue of this album.
  14. I found Christlieb's playing on this Jack Sheldon CD absolutely great - baritone included: There's also a duo with just tenor and piano on this CD - thanks to Jack Sheldon for such an unselfish attitude.
  15. I refuse - pure sadism, that question.
  16. Thanks - that's it, and that's the reason I couldn't find it.
  17. Wynton defines what jazz is, that's all.
  18. There was a video of a Paris club recording of Kenny Clarke and Lucky Thompson with Alice McLeod on paino, but I can't find it ... Is this no longer on youtube? IIRC it was linked here at some point.
  19. Mine, too! That lady was swingin'! ... and there's only so much space behind a set of vibes ...
  20. If this is funny, I lost my sense of humour ... The problem with Wynton's playing is, IMHO, that he's become so stiff and accurate. And Clapton is, to me, the perfect example of how to build a career on borrowed licks.
  21. Brubeck just had a broader view of rhythm than just "swinging" - actually he does a lot of things rhythmically, many more different rhythmic variations than most jazz musicians, because they think they don't swing. But then, most of Coltrane's phrases after 1965 do not swing either, and nobody complains.
  22. When this was first discussed here in the initial planning stages, someone stated they would have get it done just before the Beatles recordings reached the 50-year public domain zone. Well, here ya go!
  23. Added a one-post thread I had overlooked.
