  1. I think forgiveness should be unconditional, but it makes a lot more sense if the perpetrator shows some sign of remorse. As frightening as it is, Chuck is right when he says "Your biggest nightmare might be across the street or in your family" - I happen to know too many people that experienced some kind of abuse. Although an internet community is not as close, it was shocking for me to read this, words almost fail me. We do not know what might exist below the surface, this is what is so unpredictable about the human condition ... Indeed - this discussion really moves me.
  2. Anyone here had this one?
  3. More info with a list of the labels concerned: http://www.pias.com/pias/ Devastating, and though I understand the situation of those kids, it is no use to destroy things.
  4. That was one of the first jazz albums I fell in love with when I heard it on AFN Europe after it was released. It haunted me, but I never was able to get a copy of the LP, only later releases of McNeill LPs. I have a transfer of a scratchy LP, so this is celebration time!
  5. Two more added.
  6. That band made you switch to tenor for the rest of your life ...
  7. Same here - link worked.
  8. Same with the German bellaphon pressings. These often omitted the original release credits, much to my dismay. Bellaphon soon started importing the US pressings, but they issued a handful before the US label got the idea: I remember two Booker Ervin Prestige Twofers never released in the US in that form. One of the nicest features of those twofers were the liner notes, mostly by competent authors putting the music in proper historical perspective or presenting rather personal reflections. I have all of the King Pleasure Prestige and HiFi tracks on CD, but Jon Hendricks' liner notes written especially for the twofer are a treat, and just as swinging and creative as his song lyrics. Steve Khan wrote his thoughts on Wes Montgomery on one of the Milestone twofers. IIRC Ran Blake wrote the notes for a Blue Note Horace Silver, and Roswell Rudd for the Herbie Nichols, all to me are great examples of excellent jazz liner notes. Well, that cover photo shows Miles in the early 1970's - not really appropriate for the music contained. That's one of the covers I liked the most - it's really to the point!
  9. I still have a few of them. At the time, before the OJCs and other reissue series were created, Japanese LPs or those twofers were the only way to get some of the music. But I hated it when they compiled music from several LPs but no complete sessions. Some of the most interesting were the Blue Note Reissue series twofers, because in many cases they contained unreleased material. I still have the Prestige and Savoy Yusef Lateef twofers, although the former created another scattered release pattern. Some of the strangest were Orrin Keepnews' attempts at reissuing some Wes Montgomery Riverside sessions without the rejected takes that had been released after he had lost control of the label. But I heard so much music on them for the first time - like the King Pleasure twofer on Prestige. Yes, I have fond memories about them.
  10. Columbia leaves it all to Mosaic, methinks ... I had that French box, but my favourite track (It Ain't What You Do) was defective, which bugged me so much I sold it. Although the Columbia material may be not quite on the level of the Decca sides, there might be a chance Mosaic will cover the Columbia sides, too, some day. After the Decca set is sold out, maybe?

    Jeanne Lee

That video with mal Waldron is great! I don't know another singer from the avant grade camp who kept his connection to the American song tradition as intact as Jeanne Lee.
  12. Great idea to choose only live recordings! I wish I had found more time to listen, but my day job is eating me up at the time ... alt least I got Clark Terry. Very nice choices. I will keep this one and check out some of them in their entirety. I should have guessed Kenny Burrell .... and Sonny Criss. I was aware he could be over the top, but not that much! Thanks a lot, Dan!
  13. Does this donation affect Universal's publishing rights?
  14. You can use a small mirror, lay it on the turntable and lower the stylus slowly (table not turning, of course!). If all the contours of the headshell are parallel to their images, it should be properly adjusted. This method was recommended by the Thorens company back in the late 1970's when I bought my turntable. The upper side of the tomearm should be parallel to the turntabel surface, too. Simple but effective. Besides that you need a small scale to adjust the tonearm's weight - this should be available from a good hifi dealer.
  15. Different issues of tracks from one Cal Tjader session, same session, same photo shoot ...
  16. True, but, otoh, see what most likely will happen to you once you get laid and paid ...
  17. Does he grab one of the girls later in the movie? Screaming and all?
  18. One new thread added.
  19. These session were conceived for issue on 10 inch LPs - they filled these nicely. Probelms arose whenever there was too little or too much music for a 12 incher, so they compiled. The first series of those Blue Note 12 inch LPs is just that. I prefer the 10 inch LPs as basic listening order.
  20. Harold Land - compare his playing as a member the Brown-Roach Quintet with the late 1960's in the Hutcherson-Land groups.
