  1. Yes - I kept it, for sure, even bought a copy for a bassist friend. Rather than under-rehearsed, I should have said 'under-arranged' - there's a lot more compositional potential in the Ellington-Blanton duets, and I was a bit disappointed they didn't make more of that aspect. (John Lewis took a deep bow in that direction on the MJQ's For Ellington album.) But for a one-shot, probably unrehearsed session, it's very nice.

  4. I think it was this one:
  5. There was a short sample of the Feldman boy on one of his CDs - much in the vein of that video. He had lots of talent.
  6. I have it - there were many copies available on ebay in Germany for a while. I was a bit underwhelmed, I must admit. The sound is bright and clear, but the piano doesn't really sound natural. Miller plays a lot more mainstreamish than usual, and they sound a bit under-rehearsed. For my taste, more a collectors' item than a must have.
  7. Very sad news - thanks for all the nice albums, all the Two Franks in particular. Foster & Wess always made a nice contrast in the spirit of camaraderie. R.I.P.
  8. Those sold by Cadence and Jazzloft are the ones I'm looking for ... sigh ... Bags Unlimited do not seem to carry that special type. We'll see ....
  9. I considered switching to those plastic sleeves available from Cadence, but shipping them here is just too costly. I can't seem to find any German seller for these - can somebody help me?
  10. Larry, I sure see your point - I certainly do not want to compare all these tragic deaths ... I'm just a bit disturbed there are so many comments here about Winehouse's death and none about the two attacks in Norway, which is some kind of 9/11 for that country. p.s. well, two mentions of the Norway attacks - and the terrible famine in Somalia - two and three post above.
  11. I once saw Nico Bunink live in Frankfurt woith some American saxist - Charles MacPherson? Can't remember .... nice piano player.
  12. My thoughts exactly ... and even more so when I think about the kids killed in Norway - wasn't this in the US media? Much more devastating news than the death of a distracted singer ...
  13. Great .... but: he changed "Blues and the Abstract Truth" into a Blue Note album!
  14. C'mon - I'm really disappointed about the way you perceive drummer/leaders ....

The piano riff, that's all that is similar. When I first heard it I laughed, counted, and thought it was smart. Melodically, both tunes are very different. I happened to buy that LP long before I bought Time Out - knew Take Five only from the radio. I doubt anyone really noticed back then.

Take Five is in 5/4, where The Fakir starts in 5/4, the theme has 3 bars of 3/4, then 5/4 again, and ends in 6/4 - much more intricate than simply staying in five for the whole tune.

  19. In the discographies of the two Mosaic box sets with VeeJay recordings there was a note that the Fresh Sound reissues were not properly licensed and thus not listed. OTOH those CDs add bonus material and have better sound than the CDs released in the US by Koch and some other company, which simply reproduced LPs, AFAIK. Without Fresh Sound, this music would hardly be available. Too bad the Mosaics had to be withdrawn from the catalogue so fast ...
  20. The sound of his voice was unique - sorry to hear this. I remember hearing him first on Mtume's Alkebu-Lan, side by side with Andy Bey. Never forgot that sound ...
  21. Creed Taylor's influence shows a little too much for my taste on that Thigpen disc. Tracks are somewhat short, rather polished. Herbie plays great, of course - he was like Taylor's house pianist at that time. Didn't like it enough to keep it.
  22. Those wild colored discs were hip for a while in the early 70's. German CBS released two samplers of Psychedelia and Jazz Rock, one was this: This was the other one:
