  1. Billy Brooks drums
  2. Yep. I have a vinyl copy of that one, too. Must pull it out an' play it!
  3. My wife and I are going to hear Wallace Roney's Quintet on Tuesday night!
  4. Amen, over, and out, hopefully!
  5. Do you really want him to prove the opposite?
  6. Yes that album is in mono. Parallel recordings on mono and stereo machines were common until the late 1960's, not just for safety reasons (as the new stereo tape recorders often malfunctioned), but because stereo turntables were still not that widespread and the market for stereo LPs was small. I can't recall reading about the specific circumstances for that album - maybe the stereo machine didn't work properly, or the tapes were lost ... what I did notice besides that it is in mono is the comparatively low sound quality - a problem that quite a few Riverside LPs suffer from. Low tape quality etc. due to small budgets ...
  7. Indeed ... Happy Birthday and many more to come - years and orders, that is. (CD orders from others, of course ...)
  8. This kind of pre-shades Dexter's participation in the orchestra Slide Hampton co-led with Joe Haider - there was a live double LP on MPS that also begs for CD reissue. Dex was happy blowing in the section and doing an occasional solo - must have been a nice relief from standing in the limelight all the time. The sextet session was a one shot affair, so that may be a reason for the containment ...
  9. BTW - those of you who have seen Broken Flowers, what do you think of the music used? Most of it is by Ethopian Mulatu Astatqe:
  10. I bought the DVD of Broken Flowers last week - yes it's a very nice film, Bill Murray being a perfect choice. I ordered the box as well - will get me some DVDs of my favourite directors' movies as long as they're available.
  11. Luckily the Frankfurt University Library has a copy of the Ruppli/Porter Verve Disco - will go check it next week. Next step would be the MGM Disco for Shearing's sessions with Tjader - found out the Library of the German Music Archive in Berlin has all of the Ruppli Discos - except the Verve! A trip to Berlin in August is scheduled ...
  12. That would be great! :tup
  13. I have access to the Lord disco - I wanted to make sure he has everything Ruppli et al. covered - e.G. there is an unreleased Gary McFarland Verve session with Tjader Lord does not list, IIRC. Thanks!
  14. BTW - I had the Esposito 78 with both parts of Empty Ballroom Blues transferred to digital, and it turns out there are no bongos audible! Just a jam on that Ellington tune, nothing spectacular.
  15. Is there anybody on this board in posession of the Verve label discography (printed edition)? I need all the entries on Cal Tjader, but the local Jazz Institute at Darmstadt doesn't have a copy ... I'd cover all the copying cost, of course.
  16. Does anybody here know which system Fantasy used to attribute matrix numbers in the 1950's? Somehow I cannot determinate whether it is session based or whatever ... Thanks, as always.
  17. It's amazing how many players know Take Five. I once jammed with a Persian flute player in an Amsterdam dressing room, and when I started playing in 5/4 he responded with Take Five. He later explained there wasn't any 5/4 in tradional Persian music ... we ended up singing Jobim tunes in unison ...
  18. I ordered a copy ...
  19. He's really innovative, as far as marketuing and producing/presenting his music is concerned. That's a great idea with these duets - he might get even me to buy downloads! That said - I think he's got a gorgeous sound on the bass!
  20. Hi - I stumbled over another movie, too, while researching the one Tjader 45 still missing in my collection - Fantasy 540 - Cal Tjader: As I Love You b/w I've Waited So Long "I've Waited So Long" was also issued on LP and CD, but "As I Love You" never was - and I found a list of songs used in this movie crediting a version of this song to singer Jeri Southern. Maybe the 45 was released in conjunction with that movie? Here are the data on the movie: from the website of a German Rock'n'Roll collector - http://freenet-homepage.de/phranc/ - I will contact him about the movie.
  21. Could you add the year of recording to each track? Thanks!
  22. I have to say I dig these two discs enormously, but so far have found only enough time to type guesses on the first three tunes - there is too much work to be done before our vacation trip on Saturday. Again, I dig it to .... and surely will post some comments after we're back, and will not peek ... I will take them with me if I can locate my discman which is still packed up in some box ... and # 65 as well.

    Andy Bey

Here's the entry from the Lord discography: Andy Bey & The Bey Sisters: Andy Bey (vcl,p) Geraldine Bey, Salome Bey (vcl) acc by Chet Atkins (g) + others unknown Nashville, Tenn., c. 1961 Trees RCA Victor LSP-2315 Revenge - On the sunny side of the street - Zombie jamboree [back to back] - Mood indigo - It must be so - You can't be mine anymore - Dreamy - Smooth sailing - A felicidade - Don't get around much anymore - Bye bye, blackbird - I have "Trees" and "You Can't Be Mine Anymore" on a single - RCA Victor 47-7832. The jazz content is zero, but the singing (all ensemble, no solos) is of high quality. The rhythm section sounds like the typical Nashville country/pop studio guys, and there is a string section. Thanks!
