Yes, that's one of the three tracks - it was Musso's feature in the Kenton band and for that reason was rather easy to identify. But the other two tunes are rather simple JATP-type heads and could have been written bay anyone in the band. Musso didn't record these tunes on his other sessions.

I hear you, too! Didn't mean to put him down in any way!

Happy Birthday, Karl Berger!

Happy Birthday! Unfortunately I never got to meet you while you were at Frankfurt music school - I'm still working there, accompanying the dance professor of the opera department. I wish you a good time in the US! -
Sorry, no. I am looking for the composers of two tunes on a 1952 session of Vido Musso for Galaxy/Fantasy. I now have both issues, neither credits composers. The third track is "Come back to Sorrento" which was Ernesto de Curtis's adaption of a traditional Italian tune and had been a Musso feature with the Stan Kenton band. No idea who wrote "Cuttin' The Nut" and "Grunnions A-Runnin'" ....

almost got a rare hank mobley record
mikeweil replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
According to Claude Schlouch's Mobley discography, he was on Regal 3281, 3282, 3302, 3312, 3329 - the one you bought was recorded shortly before Hank joined the band. Bruyninckx has the following two tracks for Regal 3258: R-1070 You ought to know New Orleans, early September 1949 Paul Gayten (vcl,p) Taft Jordan (tp) Eddie Barefield (as) Buddy Tate (ts) Cecil Payne (bs) Denzil Best (d) unknown g,b R-1203 I'll never be free New Orleans, February 1950 Annie Laurie (vcl) Paul Gayten (p) John Hunt (tp) Chippy Outcalt (tb) Eddie Barefield (as) Ray Abrams (ts) Aaron Bell (b) Sam Woodyard (d) Howard Biggs (arr) -
Is there any other database to research composers of tunes besides the ASCAP and BMI databases and allmusic.com? Thanks a lot ...

I pulled Bleecker & MacDougal from a cutout bin as a teenager - I was curious about him from the long list on the back cover of Buffalo Springfield's 2nd LP. I was not disappointed, although I always thought his way of singing blues was a little too straight compared to black artists ... but I was moved very much by his sincerity, even more by the songs on his duo LP with Vince Martin, Tear Down The Walls - just went downstairs to see whether I still have them. They are still there - will have to put them on tomorrow.

R.I.P. He was one of the greatest European jazz musicians, and one of the best vibists in the world. Sadly most of his records are hard to come by. Earlier this week two copies of the Blue Note 10" LP went for close to € 300 on ebay. http://www.jazzinbelgium.com/musician/sadi

Donald Duck - Trombone Trouble
mikeweil replied to ejp626's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Great. Thanks for the link - I never had a chance to watch these in my childhood, and the English original is much, much better. -
One of the last real timbaleros from the mambo era - R.I.P. Manny Oquendo & Libre was one of the cornerstones of the Latin jazz movement during the last decades.

Of course! Babs Gonzales recorded another four tracks with the Jimmy Smith trio released on 45s, reissued on Japanese LP and the Babs Gonzales Blue Note CD.

There are at least two Irene Reid CDs backed by an organ trio. Savant or High Note is the label. Maybe Etta Jones, too, on Prestige ...

Gig a month in 2009 - a challenge
mikeweil replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Funny - my wife and I also agreed on trying to see some live gig every month this year. Can't recall if we caught anything during February, but in January it was Cedar Walton with Javon Jackson, this month it was Ron Carter, and next month it will be a new jazz singer from Cameroon, Gino Sitson. -
If you're so keen to mail some burned discs, I'll take one!

There are jazzfans aplenty who wouldn't listen to a tune with a boogaloo groove with earplugs, no matter how sweet the solo is!

My cellphone has a new wrinkle!

Seems like the housing is made of plastic and not lacquered but coated with a thin layer of plastic that came off under certain condiditons - it's put on like a shrink wrap. Looks like it wasn't done properly and came off. If it still works, it must not have overheated, but I would have it checked in any case. -
Adam's Apple is my favourite among Shorter's Blue Notes: Each track has a different groove and mood, displaying a wide range of what you can do on the tenor in a quartet setting at the time. My first recommendation for an introduction to his work. Playing a little funky was put down only by the purest of the purists - it was part of his palette. What he does with it, sticking closer to thematic improvisation than simply running licks over the changes or going into Coltrane's direction, or playing funky standard licks - that's what makes it interesting.

Cedar Walton is also great at quoting. Many of his tunes are collages of familiar phrases combined in unpredictable ways. When I saw him perform two months ago he managed to quote an Ellington ballad at the end of each chorus during "I Can't Get Started" - 3 chorusses in all.

There is a live double LP on MPS by the Slide Hampton Joe Haider Orchestra, "Give Me A Double". Dexter Gordon is in the sax section (playing Ben Webster's horn, btw), and when he solos over a Slide Hampton tune based on the changes of "Giant Steps", he quotes Coltrane's "Some Other Blues" at the climax of his solo! Great!

... and the LP set restores performance order!
