Whatever Ruby Braff album I bought didn't disppoint me. He has one of the most gorgeous sounds one ever coaxed out of a trumpet.

I cherish my LP of "Callin' The Blues" - I'll buy a CD reissue only if they add the two tracks from the session that were released on some Prestige compilation LP. These are missing on the OJC CD.

I wouldn't trust the IKEA shelves for a moving solution - besides that, with LPs the shelves get very heavy, and you might not be able to move it at all. I once had a shelf on 4 pairs of casters, 3 feet high and five feet wide, and it wouldn't move an inch!

Very sad news - his music is of the kind that never fails to make me listen real closely. Always manages to arouse my interest and curiosity. What an original mind! I think that Decca twofer was my first encounter with him. He had a deep understanding of Cuban rhythm and was able to use them without slavishly sticking to them. There have been few who have successfully done that without losing the groove. R.I.P.

I think it's a very personal thing how far you can stray from Monk's concept and still sound Monkish - both from a listener's and a performer's perspective. I respect Broom's vision, and I love his playing. Hopefully the trio will tour Germany some day.

Welcome to the board! I'm a big fan of yours, saw you live with Sonny Rollins a few months ago - I consider myself a fan and would love to hear your trio over here (do you have an agent for Europe?). I would never doubt it's the way you wanted it - it's just that I like other concepts of drumming better for Monk. Kobie Watkins is a great player and I can see what you appreciate about him. Just a matter of taste - and I repeat that I like you guitar playing on the Monk tunes a lot!

Yeah, he plays Monk's music and his own, that's what makes it such a good album. Thanks for the hint!

Problem is, they're all good! My favourites are the Eastern rebellion CDs (all of them, mostly those rare gems on the long defunct MusicMasters label), and perhaps this 1992 trio session:

I think a big part of the problem is that most stores do no longer have personnel with a thorough or even basic knowledge of jazz. They buy what they happen to know or what the distibutors' salemen thrust on them. These are the people that are clueless, as they know only about 1% of the music that is available. I once heard of a case where one store chain cancelled their relationship to one small label distributor due to minor sales figures. That says it all.

I know the guy who runs the jazz and classical CD departments in Frankfurt's biggest media store - I'll ask him about his figures next time I see him. No wonder labels cut their rreissue activities ... kudos to Chuck and the like for carrying the torch.

The Hersch and Bernstein CDs were dropped into my mailbox yesterday. Broom may have the cool cover, but Bernstein's CD is a notch above Broom's - tighter trio concept and closer to Monk's essence - my hat is off! The Hersch is another thing altogether - fascinating album - he treats Monk's music with love, respect, and care, but adds his own identity and music without obscuring Monk's moods - great!

I don't know - sometimes I wish I were a horn player, 'cause in the rhythm section you rarely get a break ... I sure would listen to what the others play. I think it all depends on how you actually do it (just like the music) - if you step aside to focus on your bandmates, it's alright. If you look disinterested, well ...

Using cell phones without a hands free set while driving is prohibited in most European countries - still there are plenty people who think they know better and drive like sh... while using them. I think fees should be a lot higher. Are there fees in the US?

If there's a classical pianist I don't wanna hear again, it's Lang Lang.

I think Belden leans too much on Gil Evans' conception from "Our of the Cool", including a drummer as bongo player, which sounds pretty obtrusive to my ears.

Bey is the singer for Silver's lyrics, IMHO.

There are recordings by a guy named Antonio Diaz Mena, with Joe Henderson, Duke Pearson and the like, but they are very hard to find. This is one of the sessions.
