  1. Many mono tapes probably were dumped as it was generally thought that stereo was superior etc., and the companies wanted to save storage space. Not really logical, as most households still had only mono playback systems until the late sixties or even early seventies. On the occasion of the SACD reissue of "Hohn Coltrane and Johnny Hartman" Rudy Van Gelder wrote that until that time engineers were instructed to take the most care in mixing to mono - the SACD includes both mixes to proove it, the mono mix sounds better. In view of that it was a rather stupid decision to throw away the mono tapes. The only LPs I ever regretted selling are some original Atlantic mono pressings. Those I still have sound great when played back with a mono cartridge.

  5. In the preface to my Paul Bryant discography I wrote: "Bryant’s discography is an illustration of producer Richard Bock’s almost obsessive use of editing, in this case to release tracks in different formats. Besides the LPs there were shortened versions on 45 rpm singles, and different edits for 33 rpm singles for juke boxes or radio play." Besides that, he used an alternate take without notice!
  6. Same here. When he was called, he delivered. R.I.P.
  7. It helped me a lot to read the interview with Carol Chamberlain: https://www.jazzwax.com/2023/12/interview-carol-p-chamberland.html
  8. Great stuff, I wonder where she got that truckload of photos. It's a shame this cannot be widely available due to prolems with music licensing.
  9. The latter you mention might be the other one I have: There are no "Girls" on the Lover Man CD.
  10. The companies owning the rights are afraid of losing their corporate identity when material they own is intermingled with that of other companies. Mosaic had the same problem with the Lester Young /Count Basie box - they had to place all the SONY/BMG material on one separate disc.
  11. sincse Sunday: Dora Michel & Claudia Zinserling: "Christmas Songs"

  15. I was old enough but was late due to traffic convulsions and couldn't get in the club. George Adams was wailing while we had to leave.
  16. This afternoon I took a deep dive into Balbastre's music: ..... plus several single pieces from compilations.
  17. The Christmas weekend bottle, one of the best Corbieres wines I know: Château Pech-Latt Corbières 2018 https://pech-latt.com
  18. That was the impression I got from watching some live shows on TV.
  19. That may be a problem due to the loss of many tapes from the Chess archives, and the existence of a cheapo box set covering most of the albums: https://www.discogs.com/release/15300702-James-Moody-The-Complete-Argo-Collection
