The Latin Jazz Quintet-Oh! Pharoah Speak
mikeweil replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Discography
Used Lp copies are all over the place, dusty groove, Gemm.com, ebay - you name it. -
a) I was strangely fascinated by the sounds of the Modern Jazz Quartet as listened to from an EP with their first Prestige session (La Ronde, Vendome etc.) I found in my sister-in-law's collection - I didn't get what they were doing, but I was heavily attracted to it b) I became disgusted by the over-emotionalized trend rock music was taking - Hendrix, Joplin, Jim Morrison was to lascivious for me (this is the ultra-short version .....)

New live mp3s from organissimo
mikeweil replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Thanks - downloading this right now, looking forward to listening! -
I just let out some deep moans and sighs and hit the button to order a dozen OJCs from my want list at amazon.de - about one fourth of what's on the list, but some titles are already offered at ridiculous prices. Back to the second hand shops and markets, I guess.

Great album! Can't remember which board member hipped me to it. Nice treatments of standards and pop tunes, and everybody swings their butts off!
-
What one finds difficult depends on one's taste, and most importantly, openmindedness. I began to like things I found difficult after a few listenings. Others just didn't reach me.
-
I was aware of that, but with the OJC sales I picked up a few single releases to go with my ahem... copy of the big one... sort of having less of a bad conscience... Anyway, the prize was right, too, and the album is one of the best of Wes' Riverside output, too - and of course we all love Griffin, too! I think I can follow you here .... ..... but I'm glad for every single CD I don't have to buy as I am trying to shorten my list of OJC must buys after that terrifying news of the Fantasy tapes being stored by Iron Mountain.
-
Since this recorded in 1956, it's public domain in Europe now. There was a French Musidisc CD, but I doubt they played royalties either ..... Anyway, I got it this morning - I waited so long for this one I didn't even try to resists, and it sounds okay. There was some denoising, but their source LPs must have been in good shape - the sound of this reissue is a bit more direct than the Musidisc CD. That aside, the music is excellent! A rare opportunity to hear Hamp on marimba. All contribute good solos.
-
You're right - nothing new. Box sets obviously do not count for single CD reissue producers. There's more on it than on the previous OJC CD, but nothing that wasn't in the Riverside Wes box - and all of that wouldn't fit on one CD!

Max Roach, Miles Davis Mosaics running low
mikeweil replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Those customs bastids - I had to pay € 25 to get mine! -
They could have started a Keepnews Riverside Collection and a Keepnews Milestone Collection .....
-
I was considering the SACD, too, but it doesn't have the bonus tracks, so I will go for the new reissue. Time to fill this gap in my collection.
-
This is a great session, and one of only two to hear the talented Oscar Dennard solo at length.
-
Same here - her chops are immense, but she still has to learn how to pace herself. About a quarter of the notes she plays would do. I've been told she's a real nice person, however - I'm sure she will mature to a great player.

I have only part of those Lucky tracks on Italian cheapo issues - if the Cook County Jail tracks are on somewhere, I'm in. Thanks, Jim!!! Nice fodder for the sexiest album covers on that page you linked, btw ....
-
You're not, and you are: The added track on that twofer was a sax/bass duo take of "Till There Was You" - that twofer was the Italian edition of the Milestone twofer M-47007 - and latter added to the OJCCD-067-2 reissue of "The Freedom Suite". The bass/drums duo of "There Will Never Be another You" so far only appeared on OJCCD-304-2, which is the CD reissue of Max Roach's "Deeds Not Words".
-
That's why I made my own CDR adding that track (which oddly was added to the CD reissue of Max Roach's "Deeds Not Words"). Maybe this is on the list for the Orrin Keepnews collection? Remember that this was recorded at three separate sessions, including the movements of the Suite, and thus had to be assembled from those tape reels. Maybe the best sounding master is already second generation - or did they splice the session tapes? I agree that it sounds fine but not top-notch, and I hear sound differences from track to track and from part to part of the Suite - could be that's all there is, sound-wise. (They didn't even manage to replicate the same stereo spread from session to session ... why didn't they take notes, i.e. why didn't Keepnews take notes, or did he,and the engineers couldn't get it done? I dunno ...) It sounds better when I boost up the volume. This is music not to be listened to at background level. Turn up the volume as if they were in front of you in a small club, then it's okay, at least in my living room. Listening to this right now. No treble or bass boost, and it rocks the room!

Hmmm .... I know that site, but there's no mention of a Philology issue, nor on Noal Cohen's Lucky Thompson Discography. If you have details on that issue, please forward it to them.
-
I have a German ZYX pressing of the OJCCD and think the sound is okay. If you have the US OJCCD, turn up bass and treble by 10% each and you might be fine. My new Marantz SACD 7000 ki player coaxes great sound out of this CD - no need to complain.

was Lifetime's "Emergency!" an influence in prog/met
mikeweil replied to CJ Shearn's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Considering everything I read here, I still find Mahavishnu unique. Several bands covered aspects of that band, but none covered all of them: the energy, the Indian scales, the rhythms, the spiritual touch, and the accomplished solos. I repeat: all of them. -
How long have I been waiting for a complete reissue of this rare session: They forgot to mention an unidentified vocal group on Take The A Train - sounds much like the Gordons. The folks in Barcelona are the only ones who care for stuff like this, it seems. I'm glad they do.
-
I dunno - maybe for someone from that scene, like you. I always liked them:
-
It has disappeared from my list of watched items.
-
I think there is still one missing: A 3 CD set with the complete Dexter Gordon & Wardell Gray recordings from July 6, 1947 in Los Angeles - forgot the odd title Keepnews gave that reissue. That one was scattered over at least 3 or 4 of the SJL series. p.s. I found it: Bopland (?! - probably beacuse one of the original issues was under "The Bopland Boys" - but who will remember that?)
