A happy 'n' musical one!

Any of the big band tracks on Big Band and Quartet in Concert - both solos (sometimes he almost leaps forward aurally to start his solo) and comping - and where he lays out, which is an important part of his comping.

As soon as I have some on my PayPal account after my ebay sales,I will send some of it - promised! Thanks again for this place!

I added some commentary about my motivation for this choice in the initial post. I dug it out recently and was still moved so much by its emotional quality and boldness of concept. I guess this opened the door for the avant garde vocalists to come.

On a Verve VHS video on Abbey Lincoln I own, Charlie Haden told how he preferred singers who sang like they talked, and mentioned Billie Holiday, Jeri Southern, and Abbey.

I'm a little surprised that the sound of the Atlantics receives so much criticism. They recorded at a rather low level, resulting in a sometimes excessive amount of tape hiss, but the sound of the instrument was always captured beautifully. Maybe the mono masters would sound better, as is often the case with early stereo LPs - the Atlantic LP of Blakey with Monk is a prime example. I like the sound of most Atlantics I have heard. Remember that those tracks edited from the few tapes surviving the fire sound considerably different from the LP masters used again and again.

Thanks for searching - I will consider.

Very sad news - RIP and thanks for the music.

They should have included the tune on the CD! I opt for completing sessions whenever CD playing time allows, which is the case here - I have no idea whether the tape is lost or they simply forgot to include it beacuse they didn't consult the Prestige discography. Sometimes I'm glad I'm not affected by some of those specifically "American" elements of jazz socialisation ..... I simply would like to listen to my favorite B-3 master Don Patterson on a track I never heard before. Has anyone here actually heard Patterson's version? Or do I have to go hunting for the 45?

Abbey Lincoln: Straight Ahead (originally released on Candid LP 9015, available as Candid CD 79015) Tracks: 1. Straight Ahead 2. When Malindy Sings 3. In The Red 4. Blue Monk 5. Left Alone 6. African Lady 7. Retribution Personnel: Abbey Lincoln (vocals); Coleman Hawkins, Walter Benton (tenor saxophone); Booker Little (trumpet); Julian Priester (trombone); Eric Dolphy (reeds); Mal Waldron (piano); Art Davis (bass); Max Roach (drums); Roger Sanders, Robert Whitley (congas, percussion). Recorded at Nola Penthouse Studios, New York, New York on February 22, 1961. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. From CD Universe website: I ran across this session many many years ago when I was checking out the recordings of Max Roach, who influenced me a lot (I always drew compliments on how funny I sounded when I played Roach solo phrases on conga drums). I didn't know much about the history of jazz vocals at the time, nor had listened to all of the major stylists - King Pleasure's Prestige twofer was my first jazz vocal LP, and I still love vocalese, so you can imagine how much of a contrast listening to Abbey Lincoln was after this. Here was a singer with a bold, stark approach, strongly connected to the black power movement (which interested me politically). The "Suite: Freedom Now!" LP was recorded during that year (and is recommended as listening companion). When I checked out her Riverside LPs later on, I realized how much she had been coming into her own on Straight Ahead - Roach's influence notwithstanding. The highly energetic quality of her voice moves me to this day. I agree that the Roach Impulse LPs of that period belong here, too, as does the handful of live recordings by them, and the one track Abbey sang on the Newport Rebels. (An alternate take of that and one of "African Lady" are on the Candid Dolphy CD, btw.) If I was to pick only a handful of jazz vocal LPs, this would be among them, if only for its strong motional quality.

And, of course, I miss Chris!

I wouldn't call myself a liberal on the whole, but I certainly am a liberal with regard to the general attitude towards posting on this forum - totally agree with you here, Ray. Some tolerance, please!

Wouldn't that be a theme for a BFT: Jazz tributes to blondes ....

"People" is one of the unexplainable omissions in the Prestige twofer reissue series ....

Downloading it right now - will give feedback as soon as it is completed.

Recieved today: The 10 CD Teddy Wilson box on Documents Carmen McRae Live at Birdland West Poncho Sanchez - Conga Caliente Classical stuff, 7 sellout items with music by de Falla, Chausson, Ibert, Berlioz ... and two DVDs: 'Round Midnight & The Connection (never saw the latter, am very curious)

Good idea, and since they're jazz CDs, it's not like anyone is going to steal them! But: I magine a thief taking all the jewel cases apart to find the bills hidden in the booklets or between tray and tray card .....

Thank you very much, my dear friends, I'm really moved by ..... ermhh ...... your best wishes and all. (I better not let my wife look at this thread. She might get a wrong impression ....) It's a grey, foggy day here, and I had to drive my wife to work after she surprised me with a beautiful photobook about Bulgaria - we spent our vacation there a few years ago and fell in love with the country and its people, and intend to return there next year. Another nice surprise was when I picked up some ordered items at my bookseller she surprised me with the newest German translation of my favourite contemporary Italian writer, Andrea de Carlo's latest book (Giro di vento) which I had pre-ordered but not expected before April. So I will have to choose between an evening at the fireplace with my wife and the books or a visit to the baroque marathon at the musical high school in Frankfurt, which I always wanted to attend but always missed due to other commitments - teachers and students performing from 6 to 11 p.m. on period instruments, which I love. Well .... I'll report back later. Thanks again, I'm deeply moved and love y'all!

I'm grateful for every Melvin Rhyne CD Gerry Teekens puts out!

That may be the main reason for many remasterings' crappy sound.

Happy Birthday!

Several rare items of German jazz that would achieve astronomical prices here! But the one I'd really love to hear is this: If Mosaic of Bear Family would make a Manhattan set I'd pre-order!

That's a beautiful province - the Cerdagne. That valley of the river Tete from Perpignan into the Pyrenées is my favorite - the Pic du Canigou a beautiful mountain with interesting sites around - St. Martin di Canigou, a cloister in the mountains, is worth the trip. You're probably mixing up two towns, Villefranche-le-Conflent and Alet les Bains ..... make sure to listen to Déodat de Séveracs piano cycle Cerdana before going there. The coast around Banyuls is nice, too. And if you have the time visit Toulouse, with it beautiful churches - my favourite being Les Jacobins. I'll have to go there once more!
