  1. "Blow me some Trane" - wasn't that what JB shouted to his saxist on "Super Bad"?
  2. My HP deskjet 870cxi is doing a fine job for 7 years now, and I bought it used! Just need to clean some parts twice a year.
  3. Well - the trios with Crosby and Crawford or Fournier were the tightest, with almost equally important contributions, whereas he was more the leader in later editions - I understand his move, he couldn't get any further with that concept, as perfect as it was. But I basically agree that it was his greatest achievement.
  4. Yeah - Africa/Brass was the first music where I heard, appreciated and loved this kind of thing.
  5. Indeed - I had all the LP issues of that material which was scattered over three or four LPs and was glad when the double CD finally gave me all in one place and far better sound. Go for the double - it's worth it! It was billed as a quartet album as it was simply that with a brass section added, none of whom got to solo. Dolphy's arrangements were based on Tyner's voicings and the like - sometimes it sounds like a stampede of elephants - great stuff!
  6. Saw and heard that band at a local club - all were fine players. I guess he got it that an album or two on Blue Note or Verve is not a free ticket to the train to success, and keeps woodshedding - that's the impression I got from his appearance.
  7. I had both for many years - I have to admit they were among those I sold when I needed to raise some funds, but they were fine, with some moving solos by Nat on 'em. Not over-commercialized. Not by any means. Just cleaner and somewhat shiny production and sound compared to his other LPs. The melodies still linger in my head, that's why I could afford to sell them - I knew them inside out. Give them a break ....

    Nina Simone

Just had a look at the box set credits - all remastered by the same Jeff Willens.

Aren't these all in the box set Universal put out some years ago? This is available from CD Universe for $ 35.09 and contains 8 complete LPs - the single CD purchases will probably cost you more.
  10. Amazon.co.uk has February 26 .....
  11. They're scheduled for release in Germany on February 23, BTW.
  12. I have always loved this as much as the other Silver Blue Notes and always wondered when they would finally reissue it. Not the best of all, but still good, and lively.
  13. It just comes to me that she is to jazz harp what Kenny Burrell is to jazz guitar: the epitome of taste, elegance, paired with swing and soulfulness. She's a giant.
  14. Here's the Prestige twofer CD I love so much, spinning it now:

On today's greyish afternoon I will have some Earl Grey tea bought in Antwerpen and some brioche avec crème de marrons .....
  16. Here's the cover of that rare solo CD - I suppose it was recorded for the Japanese market, but was shortly available in Europe. p.s. here's the cover of the other album she reorded for Philips in Japan:
  17. I have that one, and dig it, but prefer her "jazzier" sides, especially the Prestige and Savoy LPs. There is a jazz harp thread where she was discussed some. I also have a beautiful solo CD made for Philips late in her career. I think she was very underrated. To me, still the greatest jazz soloist on the concert harp.
  18. Granville T. Hogan & Wilbur Hogan - to make things worse, both are drummers!
  19. A very happy birthday, and keep on tinkling!
  20. Besides the Newmans, Bruyninckx has the following Cohn LPs with Green in the band: The Natural Seven - Victor 1116 That Old Feeling - Victor 1207 The Jazz Workshop: Four Brass, One Tenor - Victor 1161 The Green LP, Mr. Rhythm, Is Victor 1210. Given they are all under 40 minutes, that would make 4 CDs. But: Cohn is only on three of the four Newman LPs, and "Feeling" was a strings album. Let's see what they make of it.
  21. There were four complete Joe Newman RCA Lps with Green and Cohn in the band on a French RCA twofer CD years ago - don't know how much more the one Green LP is - some of that was on some Bluebird CD for a while.
  22. beautiful covers beautiful next to silence don't touch start button
  23. Please have a look to see whether one of the titles above is among them! Thanks!
  24. The Almeida tracks are obviously from Dobre LP DR 1025 The Almeida Trio, with Bob Magnusson (bass) and Alex Acuna (percussion), recording date is uncertain, some time in the late 1970's says Bruyninckx.
