The one Ira Sullivan album that really touched my heart was "Peace" on Galaxy, where he plays all of his horns with equal conviction. "Send in the Clowns" from this one is a classic. Wish Fantasy would make a twofer CD of his two Galaxy LPs.

All this may have been just as well more or less the reasons for him not joining the Coltrane group, as was recently discussed here.

Had to vote for Somethin' Else - although this is not "typical" Cannonball. Things would be second choice. Portrait of Cannonball is another favourite. Now if you have left off this Blue Note from the list, people would have killed ya, but the poll would be a lot more interesting ...

Too many factors play a part: If a tape is newly remastered for SACD it may (or should) sound better because of the advances in mastering techniques. I bought the Fantasy SACD remaster of Rollins' "The Sound of Sonny", and of course, it sounds better than the first 1987 CD remaster. Would have been disappointed if not. In the case of Norah Jones, it is no wonder the signals are identical - it may have been recorded for SACD playback right away. I basically agree with deus62' arguments - I upgraded my speakers just one notch this summer after 20 years, and it was a major improvement, but in the end it is the music that counts. If I ever win a million in a lottery, I will not hesitate to spend more than a few grand on top level equipment, but 'til then I rather buy new CDs - or SACDs ...

Wanted to pick this up last Monday, but the brickheads from ZYX hadn't delivered - seems they have to re-import from the US. But what astonishes me more is the obvious lack if interest in this album ....

Bought the new SACD of Sonny Rollins' The Sound of Sonny on Monday - it sounds considerably better than the previous 1987 CD, although I am listening only to the CD layer. I will check out more of them.

That makes perfect sense to me - and this it what makes RVG recordings so controversial.

Thanks, Michel - but I rather go see the Doug Hammond Trio at a Wiesbaden club tomorrow night than driving 550 km one year from tomorrow to Ingolstadt to hear Staier ... I wanted to do a search last night but couldn't get on several search engines and German sites.

I saw him on TV with the hr big band, and he left me cold - too technical, but on the Brackeen gig he was very good and really had a good tone. That's the way it goes. I guess one has a listen before buying.

Another name not mentioned yet is Hungarian saxist Tony Lakatos, who resides in Frankfurt. I saw him sit in with the Joanne Brackeen Quartet two weeks ago, and he got the spirit of those sophisticated Brackeen tunes faster than Seamus Blake! The band was under-rehearsed, they has trouble from the start: the ticket sent to New York couldn't be found, the bass had not arrived at the first gig in Zurich, so the time planned for rehearsal was spent searching a bass; on the way to the second gig in Wiesbaden the car's main drive axis broke, and the bass still hadn't arrived, so another rehearsal afternoon was gone. Lakatos was less turned off by these circumstances than the regular quartet members and dug in - he was excellent, full bodied expressive tone and all. Blake was too cool and technical in comparison. Stivín is crazy! He plays some mean swingin' sopranino recorder, for sure. Unfortunately I was out of twon when he had a gig here last year. I have some of his LPs from the 1970's - this here where he plays all parts via overdub except for the piano, voices and strings, is amazing and very imaginative:

European board members should order Morava from this site - 11 Euro plus shipping! They have a tremendous selection of Czech jazz and folk at cheap rates, a dream come true for me, as I wondered where to get these Czech CDs without travelling to Prague agaiN.

This a heavenly beautiful CD! I wish all jazz treatments of folklore material were approached with as much taste. Unfortunately Vicklicky was not performing in Prague when I was there last year - the performance dates on his website make me want to board a train to Prague! Zuzana Lapčíková has a beautiful voice - there are several folk recordings of her, all very good, but as my purse with 200 Euros and two expensive tickets for a cabaret evening were pickpocketed in the subway I couldn't afford to buy any of them ...

Rosen's book "The Classical Style" was translated into German - can't seem to find it right now - did I buy it or not? He did three CDs of Schumann for the Dutch Globe label under the common title "The Revolutionary Masterpieces": Vol. 1: Impromptus on a theme by Clara Wieck op.5 & Davidsbündlertänze op.6 Globe GLO 5001 (1983, CD 1988) Vol. 2: Carnaval op. 9 & Sonata in f sharp minor op. 11 Globe GLO 5009 (dtto.) Vol. 3: Kreisleriana op. 16 & Dichtungen für das Pianoforte (first version of the Fantasy in C op.17) Globe GLO 5012 (1983, CD 1989) This recording is unique as it uses the first editions throughout, which are much more daring than those later published and kept available by his wife. Most performer use the rather censored later editions. They are all OOP, AFAIK. I could send you a copy if you can't find them - they're great.

Staier? Not to my knowledge - I think I have all of his recordings.

I remember listening to the original broadcast. But I hardly can remember if Bley sat in with Oregon - I do remember Glen Moore accompanied Bley on his set, which worked very well. The original broadcast had some Oregon numbers as well.
