I have to agree with Jim that "Iska" is kind of an underrated gem. "Supernova" hinted at this, but is not on the same level conceptually. "Moto Grosso Feio" holds a special place in my heart for its openness. And I love his playing on Tyner's "Extensions". Still would like to hear that unissued session.

Impossible to vote. If it is arranger and composer, well, Gil Evans was not much of a composer. I prefer being asked for a favourite, but better or worse ... all these guys were very good, as were Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer, Clare Fischer, and so many others. I hear that "American thing to be # 1" (Don Cherry) chime in here.

Re. the Koch Jazz reissues of the Jazz Modes CDs (Julius Watkins and Charlie Rouse): I searched the Koch site, but they seem to be OOP.

I am always amazed that it is possible to come up with something you don't know, Jim ... The BGP reissue says the sessions were produced by Keepnews and Lytle, so maybe he was de podner. These LPs are very rare, Dusty Groove has an LP reissue, but the BGP CD is still around.
