  1. I have this LP and second the recommendation - Red Allen caught me on that one, although this kind of music is not my daily dose.
  2. This Drive Archive CD is the one you're talking about? This is OOP, but Fresh Sound also reissued this several years ago, and they also have Lucky's Urania sessions:
  3. Oh, how blessed and blissed you are to have seen Prez in person .....
  4. This well-compiled Delmark CD with the complete Apollo sessions of Sir Charles Thompson has both Leo Parker and Tate Houston on it, the latter soloing on a session formerly misattributed to the former.
  5. Just wanted to make sure that every Harry Carney lover is aware that his 1954 Clef LP Harry Carney with strings was hidden on the Ben Webster twofer CD Music for Loving:
  6. Another Basie reedman who rarely soloed, Jack Washington, can be heard doing so on this disc: But he's reported to have sufferered problems with the big horn as he had been playing alto only for some years before the session ...
  7. Just found this brand new CD Ocium 0038 "Lucky Moments": Tracks: 1. Avenue C / Basie, February 26, 1945 2. I'm In The Mood For Love / Freddie Green, May 7, 1945 3. No Good Man Blues / LT, September or October 1945, Excelsior 4. Why Not / as before 5. Irresistible You / as before 6. Phace / as before 7. Dodo's Bounce / LT & Dodo Marmarosa September 13, 1946, down beat 8. Dodo's Lament / as before 9. Slam's Mishap / as before 10. Shuffle That Ruff / as before 11. Smooth Sailing / as before 12. Commercial Eyes / as before 13. Just One More Chance / LT, April 22, 1947 RCA 14. From Dixieland To Bop / as before 15. Boulevard Bounce / as before 16. Boppin' The Blues / as before 17. Stay In There / LT, summer 1950 Triumph 18. Over The Rainbow / as before 19. Flamingo / LT August 14, 1953 Decca 20. Mambo In Blues / as before 21. The Scene Is Clean (not the Dameron tune) / as before 22. The Night Hawk / as before 23. Little Boy, Blow / as before 24. Moonlight In Vermont / as before 25. Bunny / as before Tracks 3-16 are on the Chronological Classics CD 1113 (LT 1944-1947). - There are two more Excelsior sides that are so hard to find that some doubt they were issued. Track one is a Basie master take featuring LT. Track 2 is from a Freddie Green session; 2 of the 4 tracks remain unissued, but the two others are both on an Indigo LT CD "Smooth Sailing" and a Buck Clayton Chronological Classics CD. Tracks 17-18 are two of four recorded, but as with the Excelsiors it seems to be hard to locate a copy for the other two, they never were on LP. Tracks 19-25 are the real find of this CD, they are all issued titles LT recorded for Decca (one more track was never issued) - these were on LP in the 1970's but never before on CD AFAIK, and they are very good! A must for LT collectors.
  8. Have to research about the EmArcy twofer first. My sources have a Japanese twofer "The Complete Paul Quinichette on EmArcy" which included all of the VEE CD except for the alternates and the Moods LP (8 tracks from two sessions of November, 1954) - could have been a 10" or a short 12" - I don't know. Is that the Vize-Prez Twofer you all refer to?
  9. After just finding this Ocium release (Ocium 0025) I'd say we rather ask them for a follow-up than talking Mosaic into the trouble of negotiating a licensing deal with Verve: Contents: PERSONNEL AND RECORDING DATES Illinois Jacquet (ts); Hank Jones (p); John Collins (g); Gene Ramey (B); Art Blakey (d). But they started with Jacquet's 3rd Clef session, making me think they dubbed from the Verve twofer VE2-2544! Maybe the January 18, 1951 session is already on a Classics CD?
  10. The Ocium includes the complete Dale sides (tracks 5-12) and Decca sides (17-24) as well as 8 tracks (two complete sessions) also on the VEE. AMG has correct track listings. Have to research about the EmArcy twofer first.
  11. This sadly reminds me that orginally Mosaic wanted to include Jacquet's Clef sessions in their set as well. Maybe they could make a Select now?
  12. No idea. Let's hope he's not the next victim of our Brazilian jazz haters ...
  13. Not quite, but I know another jazz musician who is a Baha'i, conga drummer Tom Nicholas, who hails from Philadelphia but moved to Europe in the 1970's. Their central temple in Germany is about 10 miles from where I live, a beautiful place on a mountainrange with an equally tolerant atmosphere without any missionary overtones, so for those interested: Official Baha'i Website
  14. ... I thought we all were 200% of that!
  15. There was a review full of praise in one of the last issues of the oldest German jazz magazine, Jazz Podium that made no mention whatsoever of his errors or the Bryuninckx alternative. Probably written by someone who never saw a properly researched discography ...
  16. Both the Quinichette Basie Tributes on Prestige are fine, both were on that twofer, both are now available as OJC's: This is another Prestige he's on, not swing, but a very beautiful hommage indeed: And this covers his rare Dale and Decca sides, I know you don't like these Spanish labels, but there is no other way to get this good music: There was indeed two sessions of a 10-incher on EmArcy, titled Moods, that's not on the VEE CD.
  17. From a later decade , but I cherish those wonderful LPs by the Ruby Braff - George Barnes Quartet!
  18. Hmm ... I thought every religion was old thought ....
  19. As a sideline: I believe this is the first time a pic is used by two different board members in succession - this was my next-to-last ava... - ehm couwatar.
  20. Could it be one of you intrduced the idea of having a poll about who does the next BT just now to keep us Europeans from passing the ball around here?
  21. Hell Yeah! Congratulations!
  22. I personally think it shows a little too much in his playing - and the two other horns are playing out of tune in some of the heads - or was that the Jazzland LP ? - that is even worse in that respect. For Dexterites, yes, but not indispensable.
  23. I'm still waiting for the 1 LP 16 2/3 rpm edition ...
  24. If I'm correct, the only still alive born before 1920 are George Shearing and Al McKibbon?
  25. Brownie - didn't want to be picky, didn't have the time for an closer look, so you maybe right, and I was too fast. Tab Smith was indeed born in 1909. Thanks EKE BBB - nice job. 1909 was a great year!
