  1. Some tunes from The Grand Wazoo or Waka/Jawaka albums would make nice blowing tunes, I guess. There have been Zappa arrangements by European classical ensembles in recent years, for woodwind quintet, large woodwind + percussion band, and for baroque ensemble - the latter is intriguing: Ensemble Ambrosius
  2. Beaucoup de congrats and thankx from me too - let's try and make it 100.000 posts by the end of the year!!!! ... and if you ever need some dough to keep the board up - go ahead!
  3. We should name these ditties couwatars, not avatars!!!
  4. That particular Lateef is a compilation. The latter was not a Frank Wess session but another compilation featuring several Wess tracks.
  5. These AMG guys drive me crazy: so he plays liner notes! and accompaniment! With all likelihood he doesn't solo on the Roy Brown dates. Here's a listing of the first LP issues: New Jazz 8218 Yusef Lateef - Other Sounds New Jazz 8234 Yusef Lateef - Cry! Tender New Jazz 8261 Yusef Lateef - The Sounds of Yusef Prestige 7122 Yusef Lateef - The Sounds of Yusef Prestige 7243 John Coltrane - Standard Coltrane Prestige 7268 John Coltrane - Stardust Prestige 7353 John Coltrane - Bahia Prestige 7398 Yusef Lateef - The Sounds of Yusef Savoy MG 12117 Yusef Lateef Savoy MG 12120 Yusef Lateef Savoy MG 12123 Yusef Lateef Savoy MG 12127 Wilbur Harden / Tommy Flanagan - Mainstream 1958 Savoy MG 12131 Wilbur Harden - Jazz Way Out Savoy MG 12134 Wilbur Harden - The King and I Savoy MG 12136 Wilbur Harden - Tanganyika Strut Savoy MG 12164 Curtis Fuller - Images
  6. I'm currently attempting to write a discography of Harden, but due to the enormous number of reissues of the stuff with Coltrane this will take some more time. Besides some early sessions with R&B groups there are his sessions with Yusef Lateef for Prestige and Savoy and one with John Coltrane (complete on the Prestige Stardust Session CD) and his own four dates, all for Savoy, and the one issued track from the abandoned Curtis Fuller Savoy date (on Images). That's all there is ...
  7. OH MY GOD !!! Yet another series by some subsidiary company, instead on one doing it right!!! That aside, the David Newman is one to get, an excellent debut. I hunted the Christlieb/Marsh for many years until I got an LP; Lou Levy told about the unissued material in an interview. Glad they include it. The Stitt plays Bird is great, Lewis plays as humorous as can be, Hall is great, Davis and Kay swing like mad. If the Swiss Movement were in concert order ...... Brownie, please keep us informed! Thanks!
  8. That's a good one!
  9. Me too - thanks for the pointers!
  10. I had the Mosaic and sold it on ebay after re-buying Back to the Tracks, True Blue & The Waiting Game on CD. Minor MOve was the session I played the least often - it has a vibe of Lee Morgan, Sonny Clark & Art Blakey showing the shy youngster where the hammer hangs - and the ride cymbal was recorded too hotz and sounds distorted. To me, not one of the most successfull 1950's Blue Note sessions. I have almost all of Tina, and find Back to the Tracks, True Blue and Street Singer to be the indispensable ones. And yes, the disco in the Mosaic is complete - that's all there is, there ain't no mo'! The Felsted Howard McGhee probably is the one that's most difficult to find - but I once listened to a reissue CD and was a little disappointed.
  11. The Keepnews liner notes in the Savoy double CD are about as much as you can find. Harden's last recording was the aborted Curtis Fuller session during which he "fell ill". Only one track was releasable.
  12. His recordings with Coltrane were chosen as Album of the Week some time ago. Click here, there's some info along the discussion.
  13. Andrew Cyrille would still be great with Andrew Hill !!! Palmetto could do a trio with Cyrille and Reggie Workman ...
  14. Actually drummer Louis Hayes was the leader on this session - he was a member of Lateef's group at the time.
  15. BTW this is one of the finest blues-themed jazz albums ever. Except for the pretty "Rain Dance" which nevertheless has some bluesy inflections, all are blues based, and what a selection of composers: Monk, Coleman, Coltrane, Feather ....
  16. humm, actually, that was me... John, I only read this now, or I would have given you credit ... and I now use the animated Mobley Flip, I dig it so much .... (you read me all? couw did it!!!)
  17. One of my ten favourite solo piano albums!
  18. Forgot to mention his Trio da Paz with Romero Lubambo and Nilson Matta:
  19. BTW, this guy teaches at Drummers' Collective and knows this stuff, I recommend his book to anybody wanting his drummer to improve his Brazilian chops: (published by Manhattan Music)
  20. Okay, for Jim and everybody else that might be interested in hearing a real good Brazilian drummer, here's some CDs with Duduka de Fonseca on 'em: Charlie Byrd: My Inspiration - Music of Brazil (Concord CCD 4850-2, 1998) Joanne Brackeen: Breath of Brazil (Concord CCD 4479-2, 1991) Joanne Brackeen: Take a Chance (Concord CCD 4602-2, 1993) Vincent Herring: Jobim For Lovers (MusicMasters 65178-2, 1998) Lee Konitz: Brazilian Rhapsody (MusicMasters 65151-2, 1995) Ana Caram: Maracana (Chesky JD 104, 1993) Ana Caram: Bossa Nova (Chesky JD 129, 1995)
  21. If you enjoy Bennie Green's Blue Note, Prestige, Time and Bethlehem LPs the Enrica is for you - have the old Fresh Sound LP reissue. Green was pretty consistent in those years and Jimmy Forrest and Sonny Clark were ideal sidemen for him.
  22. Superb!!!!! I honestly request a new board feature enabling automatic change of avatars every 12 hours!

    Bill Heid

In this case let's hope for a PM from some friendly fellow board member ....
  24. The man who tutored Marilyn Monroe is expected to remember a girl singer on one one track out of a few thousand sessions he did ?!?!?!
  25. I love 'em all with Hill, but Richard Davis probably tops the list. Johnny Coles would have been cool with Andrew, or Julius Watkins. Miles? No way - too egotistical for Andrew's music! That Ron Horton story is great. Like this guy, recommend his CD: He's also nice on Jane Ira Bloom's Art & Aviation.
