  1. This is me, over a similar timespan but with different listening habits I initially respond to an overall feel which often manifests itself in some ways as "having soul" by which I don't mean Aretha, Otis or Luther but an intangible realness, a communication of investment and intent, 'meaning it'. I can hear this both in MJQ and Brotzmann and much in between. Conversely, I struggle with "all technique and no feeling" (a favourite phrase of mine) and I hear this in Michael Brecker, Peter Evans (but not recently), Michel Petrucianni, Chick Corea and Chris Potter to name a few. Once the overall sound has hooked me then I'm engaged and listening to the dynamics and relationships between the musicians. Tunes and groove can be important too although much of what I have listened to doesn't have too much of either. Whilst I can distinguish Grover from Kenny (and pass the Jsngry test) I am bad at distinguishing individual voices generally, hence my pitiful BFT performances.
  2. Jerzy Milian - Muzyka Baletowa I Filmowa [Polskie Nagrania Muza, Poland 1973]
  3. Still hitting the right notes? Does for me
  4. I haven't heard any on that list but I do find that the presence of Gerry Hemingway usually guarantees some interesting listening. I'm afraid I don't share the general enthusiasm for Ballister or much of Rempis's recordings but I know I'm a minority on that.
  5. Oh to still be in the EU....
  6. I've started contacting the seller to see if they sell off,Discogs, some do. Pay by PayPal and you have the same protection. Also worth googling the seller name, sometimes brings up a standalone website for sales. But the VAT is a huge issue generally now.
  7. I'm not sure whether my regard for Mr Murphy has risen or not with this news got to get a gig wherever I suspect. I'm a big fan of some of his later recordings too.
  8. Sonny Fortune - Long Before Our Mothers Cried [Strata East, 1974]
  9. I love my Craft 'Eastern Sounds', ho hum...
  10. I tend to agree about the floridness (is that a word?). I tried many times to get into his music but it never clicked. I do listen to him with Charles Lloyd but that's about it
  11. My first listen to this. Strikes me as another great job by Mad About Records. Sounds good, sleeve nicely done too I hear lots of Gil in this music, explicitly on some tunes
  12. Yes, a great album, a favourite of mine. Terrific compositions and playing by everyone now onto another very fine Polish album Andrzej Trzaskowski Quintet - Polish Jazz vol.4 {Polskie Nagrana Muza, USSR 1965]
  13. Komeda Quintet - Astigmatic [Polskie Nagrania Musa, Poland 1967, mono]
  14. Interesting, a UK dealer was also trailing an imminent Muse list recently. Wonder what the sources is. I'll keep an eye for your recs Hutchfan should the list materialise
  15. I didn't have it at all and this sounds great. I really like the session. The sleeve notes suggest it was shelved because it didn't fit the more out tone of McLean's other sessions about this time. I love those other sessions and this is a this pin sharp bluesy complement. That McLean tone slices through. I know Sonny Clark has his many fans but he's the weak link here I think.
  16. That's showing as being sold by Amazon at £64.64 at the moment here in UK
  17. That's it then, if they're in the Independent Enclave Of The White Rose there's bound to be logistics issues at the border, in and out... Many of my other independent label purchases have been delayed but none of them nearly as much as JiB ones, the Harriott is another case in point. The odd thing is the on their BC page the Russell LP says 'ships in two days'. Just doesn't mention from when, the twelfth of never perhaps. Of course, I could just listen to the downloads. Nice one on 'Blue Beginnings'
  18. I'm still waiting on delivery of the LP, ordered February last year. I was told recently it would be available in June. I do wonder if JiB is in a bit of trouble, what with this, a seemingly slowing of releases and the establishment of British Progressive Jazz. No real evidence just a hunch
  19. another first listen Jackie McLean - Tippin' The Scales [Blue Note, Tone Poet, 2022]
