  1. Yes, both volumes are essential. Thought you may say that! second volume's in the post I absolutely love "around 6", but I'm a huge fan of both Kenny Wheeler AND Edward Vesala so it's a no brainer for me possibly my favourite Kenny and I like a lot of them a lot
  2. Bill Dixon - Considerations 1972-1976 [Fore] first time listen - revelatory stuff
  3. Seems his health problems may not be improving. London gig in November just cancelled "EFG London Jazz Festival regret to announce that, for health reasons, Sonny Rollins has had to cancel his Royal Albert Hall concert scheduled for Monday 18 November this year. His office have issued the following statement:- “Earlier this year, Sonny began to experience respiratory symptoms that affected his playing. His doctor prescribed rest and a course of treatment that he hoped would eliminate the symptoms quickly and would enable Sonny to resume his performance schedule. Although Sonny has made good progress, his symptoms are unfortunately not completely gone, and he is not yet at the point where he can physically perform a concert at the high level that has always been his standard. Last week, in consultation with his doctor, Sonny decided that he needs to devote the remainder of this year to rest and the prescribed therapy in order to address his current health issues. Therefore all concerts scheduled for the remainder of 2013 have been postponed. Sonny is determined to get stronger and hopefully return to performing in 2014” Get better Mr Rollins
  4. Yes indeed. The McPhee is a 'must buy' for me. I'm intrigued by Jim Black's presence in that Trumpet and Drums line up but as a Peter Evans agnostic I think I might pass. I was just listening to some intriguing samples over at Squidco of the Susana Santos Silva & Torbjorn Zettererg also a recent Clean Feed
  5. John Lindberg - The East Side Suite [sound Aspects]
  6. very close to the top of my 'to buy' list. Is it as good as I suspect it is? Yes, it's absolutely wonderful. I was lucky to score all of Lyons' Black Saint LPs as a lot on eBay some years back. They're all very strong, but this one and Nuba (with Cyrille and Jeanne Lee) are the best of the lot. It really is almost like a CT Unit with everyone else stripped away. Well, OK, maybe circa '66, less so the unrelenting late 70s stuff. Thanks, that description of CT Unit strpped away does it for me. I'll definitely be on the hunt. I know Nuba and like that a lot Theo Jorgensmann quartett - Straightout! [euroPhon]
  7. very close to the top of my 'to buy' list. Is it as good as I suspect it is?
  8. only a history teacher........Lambert, maybe?
  9. Spoken like a true Scotsman. If only. At least that would give me a chance to vote for independence
  10. My only hope is that by the time he reaches the throne this country will have come to its senses and there won't be a throne to occupy. He can then call himself 'King' and swan around the Med like the the Kings of Greece and Yugoslavia do as an embodiment of an outmoded institution of privilege and inequality.
  11. ECM also chose to reorder the tracks IIRC It's possibly unique (ready to be corrected) in the ECM catalogue as a reissue of sessions recorded by another label. I believe Eicher was keen to make the music available as he felt it represented what he was hoping to achieve with his label. I, for one, am very grateful to him for doing so
  12. No blue sky or sun in London yet!

  16. today's new arrival. sounding very nice on the first spin
  17. Waterstones (Charing Cross Road, right?) is gone too? I don't ever remember a Waterstones in Charing X Road unless it was many years ago and replaced by Blackwells nearly opposite Foyles. Waterstones still about generally but went through a "restructuring" a few years back hat closed several stores. Inside info suggests not all currently open stores will remain so, expecially in towns/cities with two stores.
  18. Good luck to them. I have a very good independent bookshop in my area set up by two ex-Waterstones' employees who were made redundant when the local branch was closed. We get a nicer bookshop, they get a lot more satisfaction running their own business - nice outcome
  19. loved this, thanks "there are no academies on the other side of the tracks"
  20. Stuart Broad been known to cook I hear. If he doesn't do so thoroughly Prior to them Finnishing they'll all have the Trotts. sorry - off to get a life, now
  21. You taunt and abuse dangerous animals, you die. One day I hope it will end probably not on animal welfare ground but hey
  22. Am I the only person that finds the "etc" in the title intriguing/redundant/lazy? They couldn't think of other otherworldly entities? or they didn't have space on the sleeve?
  23. and before Bell peppers the boundary?
