  1. singing drummers always make me think "how'd you do that?" but Levon Helm just made me think "that's the only way to do it". What a voice, what a drummer. RIP
  2. "I shall be released" The Band from Music from Big Pink. Hadn't listened to the album for nigh on twenty years and was inspired to by the sad thread about Levon Helm. Could've chosen many of the tracks but the vocal performance on this track really resonated
  3. And its predecessor Dirt Farmer. The one time I saw him live, not so long ago, he was having voice problems and couldn't sing, but his playing was superb. It was a taping of Elvis Costello's Spectacle at the Apollo, and how's this for a guest list: Levon, Allen Toussaint, Richard Thompson & Nick Lowe, plus Ray La Montaigne. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=uyXOjiVhH5U BRILLIANT! Thank you so much for finding this. Oh, that is special...when Toussaint comes in on the vocal, well. And the way you just know Helm's just singing it aloud in his head.
  4. Very excited at the prospect of finally hearing 'giant awakened' in pristine form. A must buy The Carter/Bradford LPs still doing it for me so they'll be a "maybe" purchase I'm also interested in the news that Ace have picked up Flying Dutchman....could be interesting
  5. I've owned the LP in the past. I've visited Mapledurham scores of times, even at that time I was listening to the album, as it was close to where I grew up. Until this post I had no idea. Extraordinary what you learn from the O board
  6. Otic records. Bobby (or Robert then) Naughton ao
  7. Bogdan, welcome aboard guess it depends on how completist you are and whether you want to chase all/some of the missing LPs down. I was in a similar situation to you when the Mosaic was issued. The Mosaic hype/excitement sent me off to buy a few more of the LPs and I've been more than happy even without all of them - just means I've others to look forward to purchasing when the urge strikes. it you're vinyl orientated anyway, it's a lot to pay for the booklet
  8. sample on Cuneiform site now. Sounds marvellous, just how I'd imagined WLS would marshall such resources - with precision, lightness and great soul. Here's hoping it's representative of the whole Amazon.com gives 5/22 release date with pre=order at $24 which for a four disc set has got to be worth it
  9. Double Image - Dawn [ECM]. some lovely vibes and marimba on this one
  10. I'm enjoying the music. I'll be there for the London UK gig
  11. I saw this group at the Vancouver Jazz Fest last year. I remember not caring much for it, but I can't recall exactly why. Probably something like the drummer dominating the set. I can readily imagine how Sorey's drumming may sound like a dominating force in this trio (he's a force with the lehman Octet live). I'd love to have the chance to hear them live and decide myself though. Hijack alert - I'm with everone else on Laubrock. Very interesting player. Glad for her she relocated to NYC as she seems to making the most of many opportunities - shame for London though!
  12. I agree about the Kikuchi and Lehman. Both strong and vital releases in very different ways - one quite in your face (Lehman, love the production too) the other a quiet storm. Listened to Mehldau on Spotify and either i've heard too many of his and I'm sated or it's all beginning to sound a little formulaic. I'd not enjoyed the trio as much since Ballard's arrival, just doesn't seem to have the flexibility that Rossy brought to the beat. Shame as I had high hopes for it. Piernanunzi, i'd stopped buying only as I'd a fair number but he's certainly an interesting player. Similarly with EST - asking myself, do I need another recording by them, although the previous posthumous relaese from the same sessions was a very stimulating listen

    Tony Marsh RIP

Very sad news indeed. I saw him only last month with Evan Parker at the Vortex and he played beautifully. In fact the three of us there all felt his playing the highlight of the evening. I purchased his fairly recent Psi release 'quartet improvisations' that night and I'd recommend it to anyone one with an open musical mind. We've now lost two great drumming Tony's - Levin and Marsh
  14. Paradoxical Frog, which I picked up more for Laubrock and Sorey is a very interesting recording, I feel. Davis impresses, especially with her use of space but I've not tried any of her others but will do one day
  15. Can't wait for this one
  16. disc 2. Reflectativity. WLS w. Wes Brown and Anthony Davis
  17. saddest refund I've collected was for Alice Coltrane's gig in London, scheduled for April 2007 IIRC
  18. is "too much sugar for a dime" currently in print? Article and Discogs/Amazon prices suggests not and I don't recall it being on the Mosaic (not a Columbia release). I stand ready to be corrected though... Enjoyed the article and the prospect of a new release is always welcome. London concert by Zooid last year was a masterclass in composition and group empathy
  19. mine's not arrived yet, the CDR I made up from the download will have to suffice for now arrived this morning...so maybe yours is imminent. You'll not be disappointed, I'm sure
  20. Spontaneous Music Ensemble - The source - from and towards [Tangent] followed by Brotzmann/Edwards/Noble - ...the worse the better A lovely recording as the inaugural release on Cafe Oto's new label. This trio's a dream. This bodes very well for whatever they may have lined up for future releases
  21. thanks for this. Stefan
  22. the two samples sound very tempting. The names involved are completey new to me so what's there to know? I'm intrigued
  23. Right you are about those lineups. Now that I'm clearer on the particulars, I'll agree on the drummerless trio. I have Sankt Gerold, but I think there was an earlier one. It's definitely in the tradition of the Giuffre trio, but (not surprisingly given it wasn't a working band) without the same level of telepathy. It's the Surman/Oxley and Surman/Frisell lineups that don't click for me. I think in one case Bley/Oxley isn't working for me and in the other it's Bley/Frisell--and I'm quite fond of both Oxley and Frisell. I didn't intend my comment about Eicher as a put-down, I was just noting that, according to Bley those were producer-arranged groups. I would agree to some extent about the Frisell/Surman - something not quite working there,as i hear it
  24. I think there may be two albums with that lineup, as well as two with Evan Parker, Barre Phillips and Tony Oxley, and both of those Eicher-assembled groups leave me cold. I just don't think they gel. I hear the Bley, Parker, Phillips trio as very successful, an update and development of a giuffre trio in an oblique way. They are both trios, no Oxley. Oxley appears with Bley only on two ECM releases. under Surman's name on "Adventure playground" and the collective attribution "In the evenings out there" - both from the same session, I believe - Surman, Bley, Oxley, Phillips. Again, works for me, fine playing by all
