  1. I joined the BNBB at 27 and this board at 29. Now I'm 47. According to my log 2020 is the year I've bought the least number of CDs since the late 80s. Keeping it up with second hand vinyl, though. It seems as if the median age of the members of this board is increasing with one year per calendar year...
  2. However, one of Hampton's best, the solo album he did in Japan, has not been on CD, I think.
  3. I can get back with better flute recommendations later, but the worst flute cover that I would gladly unsee, if possible, is this:
  4. "Sometime in late 1956 or early 1957, John Coltrane visited Blue Note Records to pick up some Sidney Bechet albums. Alfred Lion was alone in the office and asked Coltrane if he'd like to make an album. Coltrane agreed and took an advance check. Alfred told him to come back to meet Francis Wolff and to draw up a contract. Months later, Coltrane ended up signing with Prestige Records, but he felt he had to honor his promise to Alfred and so on September 15, 1957, he made his one and only album for Blue Note. Not coincidentally, Blue Train was his first bonafide masterpiece." https://www.morrisonhotelgallery.com/merchandise/default.aspx?merchandizeID=62
  5. I suppose the Japanese are the masters of fitting things. Well, at least Tokyo residents. I might be able to fit any number of turntables at home in theory, but I would not appreciate the busy look. One of the main ideals of Scandinavian design is 'simplicity', and that may extend outside Scandinavia as well (think Dieter Rams designs). So we might be prone to use the ability to fit things to make things look "less" rather than using up the available space.
  6. Somehow I have the feeling that he had begun to do "commercial" stuff by the mid 60s, and the style seems to fit as well. Somebody should ask him!
  7. Sounds a bit like any of those who were ghost-writing for Quincy Jones.
  8. From an archival perspective, I've heard that PVC is not recommended. Wouldn't be able to say for sure, but have actually replaced all my old outers with polypropylene sleeves. I like the "archive" look of having everything in the same type of sleeves. I still have room for 50 more LPs or so in my present shelves, so space might evetually be a problem, but I am trying to unload albums I don't really listen to. Only this afternoon I agreed with a neighbor to sell him my Toshiba pressing of Bobby Hutcherson's 'Total Eclipse'. (I still got a Liberty and a King pressing )
  9. The thread I was thinking of is actually still there (I'm amazed that it was 17 years ago!):
  10. One track ("Windows") from the first session was included on a Chick Corea compilation album. It is very good. There seemed to have been plans to include more material from the initial session on an expanded CD reissue of 'Sweet Rain' at some point, but reportedly it was blocked by the Getz estate. There is thread on that somewhere on this forum.
  11. I am not sure how this works elsewhere, but in this country, performing musicians regularly report set lists to the performance rights organization. They are sometimes more than happy to include many of their own compositions to get some extra royalties. That said, they can still spice up their life by playing different tunes from night to night (if they have enough of them).
  12. This one is nice and has a welcome sideman appearance from Joe Farrell:
  13. Since the Impulse masters apparently are now lost, I suppose we might never see proper reissues of remaining titles from that label. I have not heard most of these, which I don't believe have been on CD: Chico Hamilton 'Passin' Thru' (1963) (correction: on CD as part of a twofer) Chico Hamilton 'Chic Chic Chico' (1965) Chico Hamilton 'El Chico' (1965) (correction: on CD as part of a twofer) Shirley Scott 'For Members Only' (1964) (correction: on CD as part of a twofer) Shirley Scott 'Great Scott' (1964) (correction: on CD as part of a twofer) Yusef Lateef 'Jazz' Round the World' (1964) The Russian Jazz Quartet (1965) Dannie Richmond '"In" Jazz for the Culture Set' (1965) Chico O'Farrill 'Nine Flags' (1966) (Edit: Thanks, Niko! I forgot about that twofer reissue series...)
  14. Rather, you should stretch the file to 1,0594623228... times its original length to make it sound a halftone lower. I'm not enough of a mathematician to tell whether the ratios in the table above are correct, but if you divide any two pitches a halftone apart you get 1,059... etc https://pages.mtu.edu/~suits/notefreqs.html Then, maybe the recording is not exactly a halftone sharp, so there will be some trial and error anyway.
  15. I have the French LP reissue, but I don't think it sounds that good.
  16. Thanks for your input! Incidentally, my copy of "Sweet Rain" is pressed in Germany (as many other Verve titles from that era in the racks over here) and also sounds very good. But apparently not all titles came out in Germany back in the day (or at least weren't pressed there).
  17. There are a few Verve albums I'm looking for, and some of them are easier to find in the UK. Surprisingly, I own almost no UK Verve pressings. How were they, quality-wise, in the 60s compared to the US pressings? (Sidewinder, I'm looking at you. )
  18. I once asked Jonathan Horwich, when he was somewhat active on this forum, whether he still had the rights to the Revelation material, but I didn't get a response (though he was helpful in another matter).
  19. Agree! I would really have loved to see the whole McFarland concert! I've only recently begun to discover Tjader. Can't believe how I could have dismissed him for so many years! I guess I thought he was kinda into the easy listening "fake" latin genre. I was mistaken... The albums above are also interesting in that they are among very few sideman appearances by Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock that have not been reissued on CD.
  20. Browsing through this thread, it is interesting to note that a number of the albums listed have actually been issued on CD since. These days, maybe we should have a new thread for CDs not available for streaming... Anyway, these are albums that come to mind as not having been out in a digital format: Gary McFarland 'Profiles' (Impulse, 1966) Cal Tjader 'Hip Vibrations' (Verve, 1967) Cal Tjader 'Along Comes Cal' (Verve, 1967) Shelly Manne 'Outside' (Contemporary,1970) Martial Solal 'Trio' (Columbia, 1965) Martial Solal 'Son 66' (Columbia,1966) Martial Solal 'En direct du Blue Note' (Columbia, 1966): also release as 'On Home Ground' on Milestone ... and then some ten Clare Fisher albums on Revelation (indeed most or even all of the Revelation catalog)
