I am not sure how this works elsewhere, but in this country, performing musicians regularly report set lists to the performance rights organization. They are sometimes more than happy to include many of their own compositions to get some extra royalties. That said, they can still spice up their life by playing different tunes from night to night (if they have enough of them).

This one is nice and has a welcome sideman appearance from Joe Farrell:

Since the Impulse masters apparently are now lost, I suppose we might never see proper reissues of remaining titles from that label. I have not heard most of these, which I don't believe have been on CD: Chico Hamilton 'Passin' Thru' (1963) (correction: on CD as part of a twofer) Chico Hamilton 'Chic Chic Chico' (1965) Chico Hamilton 'El Chico' (1965) (correction: on CD as part of a twofer) Shirley Scott 'For Members Only' (1964) (correction: on CD as part of a twofer) Shirley Scott 'Great Scott' (1964) (correction: on CD as part of a twofer) Yusef Lateef 'Jazz' Round the World' (1964) The Russian Jazz Quartet (1965) Dannie Richmond '"In" Jazz for the Culture Set' (1965) Chico O'Farrill 'Nine Flags' (1966) (Edit: Thanks, Niko! I forgot about that twofer reissue series...)

1/1,0595=0,9438 🙂

Rather, you should stretch the file to 1,0594623228... times its original length to make it sound a halftone lower. I'm not enough of a mathematician to tell whether the ratios in the table above are correct, but if you divide any two pitches a halftone apart you get 1,059... etc https://pages.mtu.edu/~suits/notefreqs.html Then, maybe the recording is not exactly a halftone sharp, so there will be some trial and error anyway.

I have the French LP reissue, but I don't think it sounds that good.

I once asked Jonathan Horwich, when he was somewhat active on this forum, whether he still had the rights to the Revelation material, but I didn't get a response (though he was helpful in another matter).

Agree! I would really have loved to see the whole McFarland concert! I've only recently begun to discover Tjader. Can't believe how I could have dismissed him for so many years! I guess I thought he was kinda into the easy listening "fake" latin genre. I was mistaken... The albums above are also interesting in that they are among very few sideman appearances by Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock that have not been reissued on CD.

Browsing through this thread, it is interesting to note that a number of the albums listed have actually been issued on CD since. These days, maybe we should have a new thread for CDs not available for streaming... Anyway, these are albums that come to mind as not having been out in a digital format: Gary McFarland 'Profiles' (Impulse, 1966) Cal Tjader 'Hip Vibrations' (Verve, 1967) Cal Tjader 'Along Comes Cal' (Verve, 1967) Shelly Manne 'Outside' (Contemporary,1970) Martial Solal 'Trio' (Columbia, 1965) Martial Solal 'Son 66' (Columbia,1966) Martial Solal 'En direct du Blue Note' (Columbia, 1966): also release as 'On Home Ground' on Milestone ... and then some ten Clare Fisher albums on Revelation (indeed most or even all of the Revelation catalog)

I have 'Dippin' on vinyl from Analogue Productions, which supposedly is remastered from the original tapes. I checked "Recado...", and it starts with a single bass note right on the first beat, i.e. not on the upbeat.

TD-125 is a very nice turntable - I've got one myself. 🙂 What arm and cartridge do you have on it?

COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee
Daniel A replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
This is what the European Centre for Desease Prevention and Control says: https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/covid-19/facts/questions-answers-school-transmission 4. Do schools spread the virus to the wider community? Available evidence suggests that transmission among children in schools is less efficient for COVID-19 than for other respiratory viruses such as influenza. However, this evidence is mainly derived from school outbreaks and relies on the detection of symptomatic cases, possibly underestimating the number of infected, asymptomatic, and potentially infectious, children during such an outbreak. In summary, where COVID-19 in children has been detected and contacts followed-up, no adult contacts in school settings have been detected as COVID-19-positive during the follow-up period. The conclusion from these investigations is that children in school settings are not the primary drivers of COVID-19 transmission to adults." -
I have active tube driven speakers from the 60s. The tubes can hardly be seen, but they sound nice. And the wooden cabinets smell nice from the heat after a couple of hours. 😄 Will probably not change them for a while; I am also out of upgrading by now. Tubes glowing inside the cabinet. There are four cone tweeters and an 8 inch midrange on the top and a 10 inch woofer in the bottom (behind the tube amp).

It's unfortunate that 'If Ever I Would Leave You' from the CD version had to be left out (LP playing time constrictions...?) since it was a very fitting opening track for that album.
-
Couldn't you say that Watermelon Man was the start of the "Blue Note Boogaloo" (more than a year earlier)?
-
It was also used for some Solid State albums. This is my favorite; Chick Corea's 1968 Solid State album, re-released as a Pacific Jazz album by Music For Pleasure on cassette!

I guess I was thinking of this: It's good, though!

Oh, I haven't listened to that one in a long time. Seem to recall it was unusually pop-ish in style (Stevie Wonder tunes etc).

The figures stated in the article aren't necessarily all wrong, but it fails to make the appropriate analysis: that it's still largely impossible to compare casualties or number of infected individuals between countries - and may very well always be. This is because the matter is much more complex than most would like it to be, especially if there's an agenda (political or otherwise). Countries have been testing people to such a varying degree and by such different criteria that it's mainly pointless to compare those figures (number of infected individuals per country). And the number of casualties, which in many countries peaked quite early, depended on much more than the lockdown approach. How did the infection get into the country? When and to which areas did people go on vacation (where they got infected)? What is the average population density? How do people in crowded areas commute; by bus, train or car? I do not think that all the early decisions were wise in Sweden, but I agree with the initial stated ambition - that measures must be sustainable, maybe even over several years.

"Sir Van Morrison has accused the government of "taking our freedom" in three new songs that protest against the coronavirus lockdown. In the lyrics, he claims scientists are "making up crooked facts" to justify measures that "enslave" the population." https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-54194498

That's why you should also get a Chromecast unit.

I use Google Drive and have a 2 TB subscription. It's around 10 Euro a month if memory serves. I set it up first and foremost for storing photos, because since the advent of digital cameras most photos are and remain in digital form only, but it's really convenient for audio streaming as well. And Rooster, I think you will want to get wifi at some point, but I won't rush you into it. 🙂 One of many advantages are that use of mobile apps at home will not eat from your monthly data allowance. And since my network drive ("NAS") is hooked up to the wifi router rather than the computer, that means I can access it (including streaming audio/video) from any wifi capable unit at home.

I suppose I'm repeating myself, but this topic is popping up in many different threads, which may or may not be read by all. It's fairly easy to set up a network drive (hard drive hooked up to your home network) that is mirrored in the cloud. In fact, my network drive consists of two hard drives which are also mirrored, in case one of them fails. And then everything is continously backed up in the cloud. I have had this running for several years without any maintenance. Standard formats like FLAC or MP3 will always be playable, or - in the end - possible to convert to some future, lossless format. I'm more worried about availability of CD player hardware in, let's say, 15-20 years. There might still be some audiophile products, but definitely no mass market models. Very valid points and I completely agree.
