We have several playback units that adhere to the DLNA standard. These particular models seem to be discontinued, but there are many other current models. We're using a couple of Revo Superconnect table radios for the kitchen and children's rooms. For the music room we use a Yamaha CD player with Spotify, internet radio and network drive streaming capabilities. There are many amplifiers with similar functionality. If you want to use an existing amplifier, there are dedicated streaming devices at varying price levels. I am using a Synology NAS which has inherent DLNA support. That means that media files will automatically be accessible from units that support the standard, either from proprietary apps or remote controls or the free but somewhat clunky Undok app.

A question for all youse guys about CDs
Daniel A replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I promise you that I am not trolling now, but I've got a question to all of you who prefer CDs to digital formats which are not based on plastic discs: do you prefer them only because of the packaging (booklets, liner notes) or also out of a feeling of "safety" for owning "physical" copies (or for any other reason)? The reason for my question is the sometimes stated, sometimes implied, argument that CDs are a safer way to keep music than as files stored in another manner. But the fact is that hard drives, clouds and compact discs are only different ways of storing the same digital files. There are many safe ways to store digital data, and most often they are based on redundancy. CDs can get scratched, they can "rot", be stolen, lost or burn. A file storage solution based on multiple copies in different locations (as in local drive plus cloud) would probably be much safer. Ask a bank how they store critical data (it will not be as discs or printouts). 🙂 I appreciate physical product myself; these days primarily enjoyed in the form of LPs. But the "safety" argument has long seemed flawed to me. But feel free to put me straight. 😄 -
I realize that I am maybe not answering your question, but here's what I do: I keep my files on a local network drive which is also mirrored in Google Drive. At home, I am streaming directly from the local drive, but when I am elsewhere, I am streaming from Google Drive to my mobile phone, using the standard (Android) music player. That said, I believe that there are ways to cast to a Chomecast unit from Google Drive. I know that VLC can do it, though it's primarily a video player.

Daniel A replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
It's a downward spiral, that less and less is being spent on packaging, liner notes etc because there is no money in CD sales anymore. And then there is even less incentive for many people to get the physical product. I am mostly streaming and playing LPs these days. I only play/buy music on CD that is not available in any other format, with the rare exception of Japanese CD reissues of material which has never been reissued before, and for which I might want a backup copy to save the vinyl from some wear. -
Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!

British copyright acts says "Sound Recordings 50 years from the end of the calendar year in which the work was created, or, if the work is released within that time: 70 years from the end of the calendar year in which the work was first released." Does that mean that copyright actually expired on Jan 1 2019? (Which is the same as the "EU copyright law" BTW) -
For Hallberg fans, I would like to mention that Vax Records has acquired the rights to a large part of Hallberg's output, including his releases for the Phontastic label as well as many previously unreleased sessions. They are making all of these titles available for streaming on Spotify. So far they have released 19 titles this year, and have said that they intend to release one more title a week. I don't know if these are available for Spotify users worldwide, but feel free to check: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5q3Zh4BS8gJVpcrcGOhk8J?si=2FtPsofNTNGfzM53j9eARg

They are also available on Spotify for those who are into that. 🙂 Interestingly, some titles disappeared from Spotify a while ago (example: Matnard's 'Color Him Wild') and those don't seem to be available on any download/streaming platform.

It seems as if it is still available from the European Amazon sites. In any case, it's still available at EUR 10 here in Sweden, but overseas shipping is expensive.

I only have an A4 scanner at home, so you might want to do some pasting. Would you prefer jpg format? 🙂

I can do that for you, Flurin.

Help getting a musician hooked up w/ a good label
Daniel A replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It seems to still be in the hands of the Teekens family, but whether there will be any new releases, I don't know. There was a release in June this year, however recorded in 2018. On the Criss Cross website it says " This release is a tribute to my father and our grandpa Gerry Teekens Sr, founder of Criss Cross Jazz who passed away October 31, 2019. Jerry Teekens Jr, Bo Teekens, Amber Teekens." -

I don't really understand this. Everything else aside, if you're about to eat you can't wear a mask. I get the part that their dismissive comment can be perceived as offensive and I don't defend violent acts, but how could anyone expect them to wear a mask when they are about to eat? -

Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!

I've now also gotten a refund notification for the other copy. Still no actual refund and both orders still appear as "shipped" on Monday, August 3rd on Amazon. -

I totally do not expect an apology, it was just to emphasize that the handling was different from King Ubu's case, where he got a "We are very sorry" message. And what does "Account adjustment" mean? Whose account is being adjusted? For a while I even started to think of this as some ingenious marketing plan, as people rushed to buy an album they would otherwise perhaps not get (that was the case for me, anyway). 🙂 -
Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!

Here's my story: I ordered one copy from Amazon UK on Saturday. Then, after only a couple of minutes, I ordered a second one which I thought I could maybe use in a trade one day. On Monday I got two separate dispatch notices. Then, the night between Monday and Tuesday, I got *one" refund notification from Amaxon: "We are writing to confirm that we are processing your refund in the amount of £18.73 for your Order [****] from Chalkys UK. This amount has been credited to your payment method and will appear when your bank has processed it. This refund is for the following item(s): Item: Palo Alto Quantity: 1 ASIN: B0898F5144 Reason for refund: Account adjustment" No apology of any kind, and still - 12 hours later - no cancelation of the second order. What's more, no money has so far been refunded to my credit card, and both orders are labeled as "Shipped" when I log on to Amazon. -
Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!

"I received word that there was a dispute between the estate and Monk's previous label," Scher said during a phone conversation on Monday, July 27. So the release has been taken off of the schedule indefinitely "due to circumstances beyond the label's control," according to a statement by Impulse! Records. Co-producer Feldman was unable to provide any further information at this time."They're not saying it's delayed. They're saying we'll let you know if it's being released, not when," Scher said. "I've held onto this recording for 50 years. So I can hold onto it for another two or three decades." https://mv-voice.com/news/2020/07/28/when-jazz-royalty-came-to-paly-monks-long-lost-record-nearly-goes-public -
It might be that one or more of the controls (input selector, stereo/mono, speakers A/B, volume etc) is oxidated. It frequently happens with old amplifiers. Does operating any of these controls affect the problem? Depending on their design, it might be possible to inject de-oxidating fluid into them, but it would require you to take the hood off.

Further thoughts on the Resonance Bill Evans titles
Daniel A replied to Larry Kart's topic in New Releases
Was he affected negatively? As noted above, he sometimes rushed when playing solo. So, either it was his own choice, or at least not caused by another musician. -
Further thoughts on the Resonance Bill Evans titles

Evans rushed also when playing solo in the mid 60s (see clip from 1966 below) . That would have been well before his cocaine period, so I assume that he just had a tendency to rush for most of his career. Personally, I think rushing might be distracting, but how much so depends on the context. Aside from the accelerated tempo, I like his playing in this clip. For reference, he's going from 148 to 188 BPM in two minutes (31 percent increase). -
Even if they were "populist" to any degree, the first two RTF albums are so brilliant that I don't really care. Honest, clueless and brilliant. 🙂

I think it's hard to find many people who attribute great value to every album under Chick Corea's name. But as someone who is fairly familiar with his output, I do think that his efforts - misguided though they sometimes might be - are honest. He seems generally enthusiastic about playing whatever music he plays, so I wouldn't think there is that much populism involved. Maybe, in that sense, he's not a "genuine" populist after all...

Squat toilets are still in use in some parts of Europe. And they are not only for urinating, but also for... the other kind. Only ten years ago, I even encountered one in a cheap hotel room in a French village. If used right, they are much more hygienic than ordinary toilets. But obviously not as comfortable. Sometimes there is a water hose which eliminates the need for toilet paper.
