  1. I listened again to some of this stuff (for instance the recordings with Vaughan) and one thing I find interesting with Hammer is that his touch on the Fender Rhodes is more expressive than on acoustic piano, where he sometimes sounds a bit cold. (Like Ahmad Jamal, although his style is completely different) In contrast, Hammer's Rhodes playing and touch is among the more personal and captivating (in my opinion, at least). There are other jazz players who have a very personal touch and style on the instrument (Chick Corea and Cedar Walton, to name two), but Hammer stands out as the only player I can think of who sounds *better* on Rhodes than piano in a "jazz" (rather than "fusion") context.
  2. Here in Sweden, at one time they had spies who visited hair saloons for drop-in haircuts, while secretly documenting the source of music in the waiting area.
  3. Yes, it's here, as well as a link to a sequence from Charade:
  4. Very good news, thanks for sharing! It is probably not appropriate to call Mancini "underrated", but some of his scoring in the suspense/dramatic genre does not get the attention it deserves (I have referred to some parts of his score to Charade elsewhere).
  5. Isn't any and every online message board in decline since probably 20 years?
  6. Interestingly, I just came across this: https://michaelwelchpublications.substack.com/p/peter-littman-100-drummers-ive-seen Based on what has been written here (or maybe mostly in the Chet Baker biographies) I wouldn't have thought that he survived the 1950s.
  7. From Downbeat in 1970.
  8. Is this thread also for Discogs madness? What do you think of the pricing of this seller: https://www.discogs.com/seller/MION.USA/profile?sort=price%2Cdesc&genre=Jazz&q=Blue+note
  9. Is the Japanese pressing a good one (I almost assume it is)? This is my favorite Jazz Crusaders Lighthouse album! I've been looking for a Japanese pressing for a while, somewhat half-heartedly, as I believe it does not come in the gorgeous gatefold sleeve of the US original. Now playing a mono Scepter release (not the best sound quality to be honest) with Art Farmer.
  10. Very nice album! I have that as a NY Mono, too. From the days when such things were affordable... Most of the releases on the Revelation label are interesting, and often also enjoyable. I believe I have some ten Clare Fischer releases. Now playing this one:
  11. Well, I just want to make a quick update to this topic. It seems as if the moaning of Cary Grant has finally been restored in the latest 4K Blu-Ray release of this film, after having been absent since the Laserdisc era. Unfortunately, I have no intention to buy a 4K player, but at least coming generations will be able to enjoy this film as originally intended.
  12. The Bill English and Dave Burns Vanguard titles are available on streaming platforms (including YouTube) as part of the Vanguard "Digital Vault" series.
  13. Perhaps because there had already been two Blakey albums called "A Night at Birdland".
  14. Didn't that '58 Sessions' CD have a take of Stella by Starlight that never has appeared anywhere else? It appears to have been a mistake; the originally released version was a composite take, but on the CD a single - partially different - take was used.
  15. Dick Hyman?
  16. Dead Tone Poets Society? Subscription is not available to non-US residents, it seems. But my Connoisseur CD of 'Davis Cup' is sufficient for me.
  17. FWIW, I can see discs 1 through 5, 35 tracks, playing time 5 hours 46 minutes. Looking more closely, it appears that this is the full contents of the 6 CD set. However, they have assigned every concert to one "Disc" in the Spotify album, even when they are distributed across more than one disc in the physical set.
  18. I managed to come across the longer clip I failed to find back in 2018. English spoken interview starts at 1:08.
  19. Swedish pianist Staffan Abeleen (1940-2008) made some fine recordings. Not widely known outside Sweden, I guess. (Here's also a rare sighting of the ill-fated but gifted tenorist Björn Netz)
  20. The first one is blurred?
  21. Very nice article, thanks for posting! A bit amusing that the illustration shows a consumer-level Sony reel-to-reel deck (if it's not a super clever reference to Sony, the rightsholder).
  22. Thanks, Rooster! Your post came in between and I didn't see it first. ...and thanks to that I found the full hour:
  23. Thanks!!
  24. Any idea where this clip is from and whether the full performance is available somewhere? The description says 1966. Due to the somewhat uneven video, it's difficult to tell whether the video actually matches the audio, but sometimes it looks like it at least.
