  1. Same here. How are you liking it so far? I've found that I'm flying through it (relatively speaking). He sure doesn't hold anything back. It's good, though, that the book is sprinkled with interviews with other people who knew Art well, as that seems to give the book some alternate viewpoints (obviously). its a great read , but bit disturbing too . Yes hes certainly very frank i'm only about 100 pages in & he's been a peeping tom & virtually admited to rape. It looks as if he had a terrible upbringing to start the ball rolling. Im enjoying reading the other viewpoints to balance things up.
  2. Yeah, I'm really surprised that the J.J. set has stuck around as long as it has. You won't regret getting it, that's for sure--it's some of his best work, I think. Good luck with the smuggling operation! Thanks , I'm just going home now
  3. My package arrived today via suface mail to the UK . The JJ Johnson set the AEC box & Sonny Rollins at the Village Vanguard . I was a bit surprised how low the number on the JJ set was - 3733 of 7500. I played disc 1 of the AEC box first , I'm relieved how good it was not knowing any AEC material previously (except Snurdy McGurdy's Dancing shoes ) , cant wait to work my way through the rest of the discs. I'm a bit concerned though i ordered the Chico Hamilton set a week before this one but its not here yet. I'll be launching 'operation Mosaic' tonight to try & smuggle all these in past my wife without her noticing , when i get home from work tonight
  4. If youre the real Gary - who am i then ???

I got a copy from Amazon Uk this week, it took a couple of weeks (i ordered on the 23 July). Have you tried from this site in Spain ? http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/catalogue...abel&label_id=1 Im playing it now , for about the third time & I'm enjoying it more & more with each listen , nice one Phil.
  6. Im currently reading Straight Life - Art Pepper next on the pile Blue Note the biography - Richard Cook (I've just read Jazzbo's post , I'm not looking forward to it quite as much now) As Serious As your Life : John Coltrane & beyond - Val Wilmer.
  7. Does any one know where i can buy / hear this set - it sounds fantastic. If any one does please feel free to PM me ! (hey its worth a try ) It was a choice between Impulse / Heavyweight/MIles & VV. I voted for the Impulse set , but it was soooo difficult i love all of them (I'm only just making my way through the Live in Europe set , it's a lot better than i was expecting).
  8. Don't know which Hills you're looking for, but Italian internet store ControTempo might be able to supply them. You can order in English , just click on the title etc. The page can take a while to load. how do you find cotrotempo's service? I have only ordered the once from them , at the start of July i ordered 3 Ellery Eskelin CDs after asking for recommendations on this board . Last week i hadnt heard or received anything so i Emailed them , they replied they had one but they will be ordering the other 2 at the end of August! I was hoping for slightly faster service than this. Are they normally quite reliable & I've just been a bit unlucky ?
  9. Lee Konitz is on the the new Elvis Costello CD - North.
  10. count me in if your shipping to the UK.
  11. I will be when i get the slightest hint of the LIVE EVIL box release date!
  12. thanks for all the votes & great posts . Definately a close run thing between 4 of the sets so far. By the way I only need 1 of the sets now , my mouse finger got itchy with all this Miles talk . 1 to go (ironically its of my favourite miles period ). Please keep the votes coming if you havent done so yet.
  13. Talking of Cameos - Miles is on Cameo's - Machismo LP - i think the tracks called 'In the Night' & hes on a Scritti Polliti LP i think its called Provision.
  14. I' m 2 off having them all & are toiling over ordering them (i have all the single CDs in them ) rather than asking the usual -' what do you think of this?' i thought it would be more fun to see how they got on in a poll. What's your favourite ??
  15. the Jazz on 3 broadcast is tonight 11:30 GMT & can be listen to far a week afterwards here http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazz/jon3/jon3.shtml

well i'm convinced - i've just ordered a copy from Amazon Uk for a very reasonable £10.99.
  18. Nothing on this list seems to stand out to me compared to the other RVG /Conn list - I voted for the Horace Silver . You can never go wrong with a bit of Horace

    Sep RVGs

God this is tough - I'm going to buy all 5 , but if i only had a tenner in my pocket - i'd have to choose between the Lee Morgan & Jackie McLean & go for 'Let Freedom Ring'.

    Oct conns?

I cannot vote - I honestly cant choose between the Mobley / Morgan & Young - i want all three BADLY ! I already have the Sam Rivers - its a great CD.
  21. Typically I ordered the Chico Hamilton set on Monday . I could have taken advantage of the offer to get the AEC box . But then again that JJ Johnson box looks very enticing.
  22. just stumbled upon this http://www.mosaicrecords.com/promotion.asp & was suprised nobody has mentioned it . If it old news I'll (try to ) delete the thread.
  23. Congratulations - welcome to the happiest days of your life . Any names decided yet ? I managed to sneak in Miles as a middle name for my son.
  24. 'You dont know what love is' - Sonny Rollins
