  1. I vote that SS1 send moose a candle!
  2. Wouldn't make a difference to me. I only surf the board via the "New Posts" feature, or "Unread Content" now . So any threads that are new will show up in there regardless of the forum they're in. If most board members do this, then I'd wonder if the lack of response is for other reasons, not that the thread is buried amongst non-jazz threads.
  3. Mark Hollis' career arc is fascinating. In a very small discography of 5 Talk Talk albums and 1 solo, he went from pure synth pop new-wave to a classic pop album, and then evolved from there into more improvisational, tranquil, minimalistic music. I don't listen to the first one very often, but the rest are wonderful albums. I wish Hollis had kept making music instead of disappearing off the face of the earth.
  4. Soulstation1 put us all to shame this week! edit - well, one of the two Soulstation1's did, anyway.
  5. It's topical. I don't see any posts in this thread discussing politics.
  6. If it makes anyone feel any better, he's in our football pool and participating in it each week, to include the game going on tonight.
  7. For me as an Astros fan, Game 5 didn't hurt as much as Game 4, when their bullpen (really Harris & Sipp) cratered and gave up all of those late runs. They had the game and the series in the bag at that point. All in all it was a good season for Houston. Hopefully they can address some of their shortcomings and do better next year. It feels like "just wait til next year" instead of just saying that.
  8. 12 years later, we all go back to where we start:
  9. Indeed. It's somewhere between ridiculous and ironic that Houston now has very good baseball and basketball teams, and a perpetually godawful football team, but guess who still gets the lion's share of viewership, let alone media coverage? I just saw a piece last week that claimed that almost twice as many people on average were watching Texans preseason games (featuring mostly second-stringers) than watched the Astros-Yankees wild card game. Football is king in Texas. 'Twas ever thus, and seemingly always will be, unfortunately for those of us who recognize the clear superiority of baseball. I know I'd watch more Astros games if it were possible with any of the cable providers in Corpus Christi, and so would many other fans in this area. This is an Astros market, but since the Astros have been on "Root Sports" and whatever it was before that, they simply aren't available here to watch. They used to be on Fox Sports all the time. So I can understand why the Astros tv market is small, even in Houston over that general timeframe, with some games getting a 0.0 viewership. What still doesn't make sense to me is why Houston is considered a small market for baseball when it's the 4th largest city in the nation.
  10. Lobos would definitely get my vote. Could probably make an argument for all 15 of those artists, they've all made contributions.
  11. Keuchel had a high pitch count today, but looked great. I think he's continued the level of play from the regular season that has him as a front runner for the Cy Young. I think he deserves it. Colby Rasmus didn't hit a homer tonight (for the first time in the postseason), but he did hit one so high that it hit the rafters inside Minute Maid Park. Ended up being fair because neither the Royals right fielder or second baseman could react to the carom quickly enough. I think they said that hasn't happened in that Park before (or at least that Biggio, who was watching and commented, had never seen it happen). McCullers is on the mound tomorrow, hopefully the Astros bring their bats.
  12. Thanks! I'm still in shock about this season for the 'Stros so far. Exceeded my expectations and most fans, I think. The two times I saw Carlos Correa in person while he was with our local team this season, I never imagined he'd be playing in October *this year*. Dude only turned 21 two weeks ago. I'd love to see a competitive series against the Royals now!
  13. Sco sat in with The Roots on the Tonight Show last night. Was nice to see him get some publicity. I think the last time he was on a talk show was when he went on Leno and did a song from his Ray Charles tribute with John Mayer (which was probably more likely a result of wanting Mayer on the show at the time, I'd guess). At any rate, way to go John! Always nice to see jazz musicians on tv!
  14. Happy Birthday!!
  15. Works for me. I know Conn picked the Steelers above (snicker), so his pick should count, but I don't think Matthew made his picks. I know he saw the msg I sent him on FB, so perhaps he's not playing this season. And I guess the "other" Soulstation isn't playing this season either.
  16. Previous year winners: 2014: Matthew 2013: Edward 2012: Aggie87 & Vajerzy (to use Edward's term, a wimpy tie!) 2011: Noj 2010: Aggie87 2009: Vajerzy 2008: Connoisseur Series 500 2007: Noj 2006: Edward 2005: Connoisseur Series 500
  17. Also late like Paul - Happy Birthday, Bob!!
  18. Reminder to all those who are going to play this year, the first game of the season is tomorrow night (Steelers/Patriots)! Anyone interested in joining that hasn't played with us before, jump on in! The Pool is hosted on CBSSports.com Vajerzy is our benevolent leader.
  19. That's actually not a bad tune - a little syrupy, but not bad. Makes me miss both Dudley Moore and Sir John Gielgud.
  20. I'm Telling You Now by Freddie and the Dreamers. I think even someone like me could actually do this dance.
  21. I'm a fan of Bar Talk as well - took me forever to find it on CD. I've had the vinyl for a while. Sco signed the cd for me (and East Meets West, his first solo album, at a different show).
  22. Have a most wonderful day!
  23. Well the Astros started out well in the top of the 1st vs the Rangers, with a Carlos Correa 2 run HR. This kid's gotta be the Rookie of the Year I think. Watched him a couple of times here in Corpus Christi this year before he left us and moved up - he's gonna be good for a long time I think. Then the bottom of the 1st came around. The Rangers scored 6 runs off of Lance McCullers, to only one out. Jeez. Easily McCullers' worst outing ever. This doesn't play well for the Astros, they really have no long relievers (as mentioned by the Rangers talking heads on Fox Sports SW). They do have some bats though, so we'll see if it ends up being a close game or a rout.
  24. More spam than scam, but I enjoyed this one. Only time can open our eyes to the kipperwho! ....from one Tanvira Cool, in Turkmenistan: "It's hard to be alone, and even more hard to tumble to that with the same tribulation is, one who could be close to you, have a buddy who could tumble to, to give advice. Or it may be more than a mate. The man who opens his heart, soul, and that I will be ready to partake more than their feelings. But I else have not seen such in my city, in the land. And I determinate to make a pace. Step-by-side altars of my country, and now you're reading this letter. And mayhap you're the type of person that I need him. And I'll need you. And let us be just buddy! But perhaps that is no longer begins with mate? Only time can open our eyes to the kipperwho with you. Only time can tell us what awaits us.I Tanvira. I live in Turkmenistan. I'll put your photo. And if your respond you will respond me the same as you send out your photo and say your name and where you are. Thus, we take one footstep in our connection. And who knows what will be forthcoming of us. And we can be good pal, and maybe more. Who does not know what awaits us, and what the future holds for us.At this point I made the first stride, and now everything depends on you. Good luck."
  25. Interesting survey done here: http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/america-has-spoken-mlb-steroid-users-should-lose-a-third-of-their-stats/ 59% of all respondents think that MLB players who were known to use PEDs should either have their HR records stripped entirely, or perhaps more intriguingly, reduced by a percentage. If you were to reduce the know PED users stats by either 20% or 33%, the leaderboard would change as follows: edit - sorry for the large size - I have no idea how to make it smaller.
