Inspired by an album Lon was listening to, I thought I'd share a couple of pictures from Brazil that I took in 1991. Ipanema Beach, sunset: Cristo Redentor, atop Corcovado: Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pao de Azucar), seen from Corcovado: Samba show at Plataforma - I wasn't there during Carnival, unfortunately, so this was the next best thing: I flew in this helicopter and we landed in a clearing in the Amazon forest, near Manaus: I haven't pulled my old albums out in a long time, and noticed the colors aren't what they once were. I don't know that I even have the negatives anymore either, unfortunately.

This gentlemen is donating 14,000 recordings to public archives, and the comments here dis him for getting promo copies and for having "only" 14,000 LPs. What's next? Someone want to jump in and claim that some of the albums have scratches? I don't think anyone in this thread is criticizing the donation, unless we're reading different posts. -
I agree. Hate to see Bowen go, always thought he'd retire a Spur. But he doesn't have much left in the tank I don't think. Thomas and Oberto are role players, and their numbers should be replaceable pretty easily. Not sure it's enough to get past the Lakers either, but it's nice to see they're finally shaking things up a little. I thought Drew Gooden was going to be a good pickup for them this past season. I think he could fit in pretty well, with a full offseason.

Wow.... Spurs acquire Jefferson from Bucks MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Bucks official with knowledge of the deal said Tuesday that Milwaukee plans to trade scoring forward Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs for Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto, giving them a veteran cast and financial flexibility. The person confirmed the pending trade to The Associated Press and requested anonymity because the deal is not official until a call later Tuesday. ESPN.com first reported details of the deal. The Bucks are sending Jefferson away less than a year after acquiring the scoring forward in a draft day trade last season with New Jersey for Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons. Jefferson's contract has two years and $29.2 million remaining on it. Jefferson was a steady offensive force for Milwaukee last season after spending his first seven years in New Jersey. He averaged 19.6 points and shot a career-high 39.7 percent from 3-point range while starting all 82 games. Jefferson became the Bucks' biggest offensive threat after Michael Redd and Andrew Bogut suffered season-ending injuries, but the Bucks' tight financial situation made a move necessary. Milwaukee does not want to pay the NBA's luxury tax, which last year hit teams dollar-for-dollar once they reach $71.15 million in total payroll. Redd, Bogut and Jefferson are scheduled to make more than $41 million combined this season. The trade was a shock to at least one Bucks player: Charlie Villanueva posted "RJ traded to Spurs. Wow" on his Twitter account before the trade was official. The deal actually might allow the Bucks to keep Ramon Sessions or Villanueva himself, since both are restricted free agents. Bowen, Thomas and Oberto give the Bucks a veteran group. None is signed beyond the upcoming season. Bowen, 38, is a 13-year veteran known for his defensive efforts against the Western Conference's top guards. Thomas, 36, has played 14 years in the NBA, primarily at forward and center, and has been a bench player each of the last three seasons, averaging 4.3 points last year. Oberto, 34, has played four years in San Antonio, averaging 3.6 points per game in his NBA career. Last season he underwent a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat.

Leno has always defined "bland" to me - both his monologue and his interviewing skills. The funniest things on his show were the newspaper headlines and the Jaywalking skits, which weren't about him. edit - RIP, Ed!

Seconded. Memories of my father, who passed in 1991, are making me smile today. And getting to have dinner and spend time with my two kids today makes me smile even more. -

One more that hasn't been mentioned is Terje Rypdal's "Vossabrygg", with Palle Mikkelborg.

Oh, and Bud Powell's "A Portrait of Thelonious". And "Monk's Casino", which not only covers Monk, it covers EVERY Monk tune.
-
I'm not Lon, but I'd recommend the Paul Motian tribute "Monk in Motian" with Lovano, Frisell, Geri Allen, and Dewey Redman. "Play Monk and Powell" is about half Monk: Motian's got a number of Monk tunes scattered throughout his discography in addition to these two.

If that's the case, it's better not to buy any discs at that price ($5 + $2.79 shipping), because yourmusic.com has 99% of the same titles for $6.99 apiece, which includes shipping. Plus, you can join and quit yourmusic at any time. And I THINK if you didn't already have a yourmusic account, and you switch over from BMG, they will set it up so that you don't have to purchase monthly titles through your queue.

Strange town you live in, Conn! (I wonder if they'll start putting parking meters in people's driveways!) Ohioans ticketed for parking in own driveways TOLEDO, Ohio – Residents of Toledo, Ohio, are complaining that they received $25 tickets for parking their vehicles in their own driveways. Mayor Carty Finkbeiner says he stands by the citations handed out last week by the Division of Streets, Bridges and Harbor. He says the tickets were issued under a city law against parking on unpaved surfaces, including gravel driveways. During a news conference Monday, Finkbeiner ignored a reporter's question of whether the crackdown and fines were related to the city's budget crisis. The three-term mayor faces a recall vote in November. Critics have claimed he's wasted city money. City Councilman D. Michael Collins calls the ticketing "Mickey Mouse nonsense." He has told residents he'll try to have the citations rescinded.
