Certainly one of the finest of the 70s trio dates. I also like Number Nineteen. Yes, I've been playing this again today.....it's VERY good. I understand that it was recorded by Manfred Eicher for release on ECM but for some reason it never happened and eventually came out on the Japanese label Globe. Anyone know the story behind this? Good question. I assume it was a licensing thing; Globe had several Mal Waldron titles in their catalog including The Call (Japo) and All Alone (GTA Italy). The catalog numbers on these titles align with Japanese Victor LPs and I believe the two were related. Most Japanese ECMs I've encountered are on Trio/Kenwood and from a few years later. I just wondered whether there might have been a falling out between the two (Eicher & Waldron). Mal Waldren's "Free at Last" was the very first release by ECM and "Spanish Bitch" was recorded less than a year later. Apart from one other recording, "The Call" (which came out on Japo and has never been re-issued on CD), Mal Waldron never recorded for ECM again.

  6. I really like the sound on my Threadgill set which just goes to show how individual the listening experience is, I guess. The audio system does also have a bit of influence .......plus your hearing......mine's pretty poor now..........

  8. Might be worth dropping a line to Hazel Miller....she's been re-issuing some of the Ogun back catalogue.
  9. Ah....if only.
  10. The Vocalion CD release sounded pretty OK to my ears (I have the LP too). So I would say - the booklet ! Plus - Henry's socks seem to have a slightly more psychadelic shade of yellow. Yes, I too am more than happy with the sound of my Vocalion CD. It does seem a shame that we're getting multiple re-issues of what were previously hard-to-find British jazz albums (I seem to recall one of Michael Garrick's albums released by Vocalion was similarly re-issued not so long ago) whilst there are still so many 'gold-standard' albums that have never been re-issued at all.
  11. I've just noticed that Esoteric Records have re-issued Henry Lowther's album "Child Song". It's described as "......has been newly remastered from the original master tapes and includes an illustrated booklet and a new essay." I wonder how it differs from the Vocalion release that came out in 2005?...anyone know?
  12. Ah......not as interesting as I thought it might be..
  13. Jonathan, I can't recall whether you said you were considering re-issuing the other John Carter/Bobby Bradford Flying Dutchman album "Self -Determination Music" but I've always enjoyed it as much as "Flight for Four" and it would lovely to see it given the JLH treatment....plus of course, the same goes for Horace Tapscott's "The Giant is Awakened" which is still awaiting a CD re-issue. Whilst on the subject of John Carter/Bobby Bradford on Flying Dutchman can anyone tell me anything about the two tracks by the JC/BB Quintet with Horace Tapscott mentioned in my Bruyninckx (spelt right?) - "In The Vineyard" & "Avant Garde". They appear to have been released on Flying Dutchman FDS109 but Google says this is an album called "Hogfat" by Jimmy Gordon & His Jazznpops Band. Does anyone know whether they have ever been released on vinyl or CD? Update: I've just noticed that the two tracks are available on a recently re-issued compilation "Headstart" by The Bob Thiele Emergency. My order's in!
  14. According to Bruynincx: Vaun Ex St. Elmo's Fire So Nice Recorded in LA on October 31, 1957 with Stu Williamson (trumpet), Harold Land (tenor saxophone), Elmo Hope (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass), Frank Butler (drums) Pacific Jazz PJ33 Oops, misspelled Bruyninckx' name. It's easily done.......

  16. My copy arrived this morning. Beautiful artwork...beautiful sound...beautiful music...just, beautiful.. Thank you so much for re-issuing it Jonathan.
  17. I've just checked on the 'other' board and it was '100% Proof' that was re-issued on CD in mono, not "Mexican Green'.
  18. Which of his Fontana re-issues was in mono when everyone was expecting it to be in stereo?....Mexican Green?
  19. Yes, I was playing this today. A nice, straight-ahead trio session.
  20. I wonder if there's a list of the 300 shops anywhere....... It's not 300, but there's a pretty good list at the RecordStoreDay website. Many thanks for that BeBop. I guess it's time take the car out of the garage..............
  21. Is that to enable you to reach your level of incompetence?
  22. Yes, it's fine Roger...very informative. BTW is the new release of "Prelude to Heart is a Lotus" ever likely to see the light of day as a CD reissue?
