  1. I just ordered that a couple of days ago. As a big Herrmann fan (not to mention a big Laird Cregar, Linda Darnell, and George Sanders fan) I've been waiting for this release a long time! I just watched this, and the score is indeed excellent and pretty much carries the film, which is full of plot holes. The 11 minute piano concerto that ends the film is fantastic. Cregar and Darnell (Arhh-OOOOH!) are excellent, Sanders kind of walks through it.
  2. I'm another one who voted for the last item in the poll. There's just too much great music out there to limit myself to one genre.
  3. New label devoted to classic film scores releases two Herrmann discs, here.
  4. Hope you had a great day!
  5. Donal Fox: Blues on Bach here.
  6. A new Cambodian restaurant in my neighborhood was playing some Blanton/Webster era Ellington last time I went there!
  7. Isn't Richard Boone the protaganist in that? He made such an interesting bad guy in The Tall T. Yes, indeed!
  8. For the audiobook version does he do all the voices?
  9. Just received Gerald Wilson and Jazztet Boxes today and have begun listening to them alternately, starting with first disc of Wilson, then Jazztet, etc. Loving both of them so far...
  10. I'd like to contribute via check, too. Where do I send it? PO Box 16129 Lansing, MI 48901-6129 Check payable to Jim Alfredson In the mail today.
  11. I forgot to add that I rented a DVD of the TV series Have Gun, Will Travel last weekend. I had forgotten, if I ever knew, that the striking opening theme was by Herrmann. Great show, BTW.

  13. Agreed!
  14. I'd like to contribute via check, too. Where do I send it?
  15. I went for the Jazztet and the Gerald Wilson. Those ought to hold me for a while.
  16. Jorritt Dijkstra
  17. John Lewis recorded some Bach. The fine pianist and bandleader Donal Fox has incorporated Bach material into his music. Not sure how much of it he's recorded, but I've heard him live and he really makes it work.
  18. Absolutely! His Savoy stuff with Lucky Thompson is primo, too.
  19. Funny clip. Clearly, any song that repeated the words "sweet Jesus" so many times had to be a "spiritual," as Welk says at the end! Wonder what they thought a "toke" was.
  20. No, pretty close to the studio versions IIRC. Still, a bunch of previously unrecorded tunes makes this intriguing.
  21. And that's exactly what is happening at http://www.wkcr.org at least until midnight today, edst. I tuned into WKCR for morning classical to hear what's on and their birthday broadcast is on! Happy Birthday Mr. Monk. Hey, same here! I'm so happy that this man gave us such great music. One of the things that makes being alive worthwhile. Truly cause for celebration.
  22. Why not have an even LONGER look and reverse your decision - that is one of the best ever Mosaic sets in my opinion. Great box indeed. I skipped the free shipping sale, but I'm sorely tempted to pull the trigger for Farmer/Golson this time.
  23. As a Bostonian, I'm going with E/O, too! (Although, I have to say, that two of the best shows I've caught in Boston over the past few years were the Mingus Big Band and the ICP Orchestra.)
  24. Old one had a Blue Note vibe to its design. The new one is just fugly.
  25. Hey, Sun Ra's baritone saxophonist Pat Patrick's son is now the Governor of Massachussetts. He's running the government here. Beats being on some list.
