  1. Stanley Turrentine is one of my favorites from way back. In fact, it was hearing that big soulful tenor sound on Pieces on Dreams from the Don't Mess With Mr. T album on quiet storm radio that got me interested in jazz in the first place.
  2. I guess that middle-aged men these days are those who grew up with CDs and got into vinyl the way that we (older farts) might have been fascinated by 78s.
  3. RIP The Hurricane, who truly lived up to his name a force of nature. His 2-disc CD gets a lot of play from me.
  4. In addition to the dates listed here, there are two takes of I Found a New Baby from June 1, 1937 with Buck Clayton on trumpet. Teddy Wilson is on piano, Buster Bailey on clarinet, Freddie Green-g, Walter Page-b, Jo Jones-d.
  5. I seem to recall that at least one of the bootleg labels pirated the Louis Armstrong and the Blues Singers set. So it might be had at a reasonable price somewhere. It makes for great listening.
  6. Very interesting. Thanks. It certainly does sound like Coltrane.
  7. There are three tracks that did not appear on the initial releases of this album: Emily, Who Can I Turn To, and Waltz for Debby. I believe that some of the more recent reissues have added them, which might be part of the confusion.

Be sure and make copies of all of your playlists. I made the mistake of not doing that once and lost them when itunes crashed. It is easy to make copies Select a playlist and go to file - library- export. Then even if itunes fails to recognize your playlists when you switch your default to the external drive, you can just reload them simply (import). John, have you successfully done this before? Because I have a backup of my pre-migration files. My fear is that iTunes won't recognize my new files when I want to switch back. Mjzee - As I wrote above, you can save (backup) your playlists to whatever drive you want. Like Betrand, I don't even know where to find my playlists if I don't save them in that way. If itunes fails to recognize your playlists in this case, as happened to me before, you can just load them back into itunes through the "import" function. Yes, I have done that before. It is very easy. Once you load them, itunes will recognize them.

Sounds complicated. You do have your preferred drive selected as the default itunes drive. Right. And you have selected the option to have all your files copies to the default drive. Right?
  11. Strange indeed. Some of the tracks would seem to be from the Argo album, "Max." Others would seem to come from "Featuring the Legendary Hassan." Some tracks I don't recall Max recording as a leader. So there are probably songs under the leadership of others.
  12. Best wishes to Jazzmoose!
  13. Thanks for this!
  14. Good point. A little bit of ignorance may indeed be needed for the bliss of Dylan's music from that period.
  15. I'll certainly get the 6-disc set, and really hope to hear the 18-disc set at least once. These are exactly the years that Dylan walked on water.
  16. RIP Mr. Woods!
  17. They are on Lester Young, Masters of Jazz Volume 9. Amazon now has some of the Masters of Jazz volumes for download at $7 a pop, but I didn't see volume 9.
  18. With the slim pickings of vintage releases these days, beggars can't be choosers.
  19. Yes, that is what I was referring to. Of course, there are also Basie Jubilee sessions with Pres.
  20. Actually, it is usually referred to as the Kansas City Five session with Helen Humes. John Hammond recorded it on the sly on June 3, 1938 when the Basie band was still signed to Decca. The tracks were originally released as being (incorrectly) from the Spirituals to Swing Concert. Buck Clayton, Lester Young, Count Basie, Walter Page, Jo Jones, Helen Humes Alley Oop, Blues With Helen, I Ain't Got Nobody, I Never Knew, Don't Be that Way, Song of the Wanderer, Mortgage Stomp, Lady Be Good. Great music!
  21. Alas not complete. 'Song of the wanderer' is missing on the Vanguard set. It is included on the EPM disc Count Basie The golden years vol. 2 1938. That disc in turn misses 'Lady be good' Yes, thanks, I forgot about that! I have it on Masters of Jazz
  22. You will have the vast majority of it. As mentioned above, the Savoy recordings are not included. Also, there are essential early small group recordings made for Commodore and Columbia (Kansas City Six sessions). Then there are the Jubilee sessions, and, of course, his work with Teddy Wilson / Billie Holiday. Thanks, John. I have the Holiday sides, of course. Odd that the first Mosaic didn't include the KC6 sessions. Savoy and Jubilee -- what would be a good source for those? Sorry, as was clarified above, the Commodores will be included. Savoy issued a 2-CD set of all the Savoy recordings, including an absolutely killer live date from 1950 that was issued on that label in the 70s. It is still available from Amazon as CD or download. The Columbia studio session of the Kansas City 6 was issued in full on the Spirituals to Swing Box Set (also still available at Amazon). The Jubilee tracks have been on various compilations. I have them on Masters of Jazz

Great It doesn't sound like they are including the Lester Young material in the William Savory collection--too bad. Little to none, it seems. Counting existing sets of this material (none of the discs filled to the brim though): - Basie on Decca: 3 CD - Pres on Aladdin: 2 CD - Pres on Commodore: roughly 1 CD - Pres on Keynote: 1 CD - Pres' session with Nat Cole for Verve: half a CD That leaves a disc for the other bits mentioned, plus some 15-20 minutes per disc to fill everything to the brim, if they're inclined to do so (usually they're not). I'm in, hell, if you don't have 3-4 tunes, then you really don't have it all, right?. Clear off one set of shelf space, make room on another. Actually, Pres on Commodore would take two CDs if they include all the alternates
  24. if you're expecting anything useful out of the booklet besides the listing of musicians, you will be disappointed. I haven't made it past disc 3 of the Newport set yet, but I'm glad it's all in one place despite the presence of previously released material. Were other Newport appearances by Miles recorded too? Is this set all there is? I can tell you that the 7/1/75 show I attended was about 2 hours, with an intermission. Odd that they're only including one track here. It is odd. There are longer tapes of that concert in circulation.
