All of this material was out and around on various bootlegs before these box sets appeared.

Seven of these tracks appeared on a bootleg CD, "First Giant Steps," that also included the 1946 army recordings.

Was it Blues in the Night?, i.e. "My Mama Done Told Me." A lot of bands hate playing that, and I don't blame them.

Not jazz, but a great Sonet release. I consider this to be the single best recording that Mighty Joe Young left us.

The word genius is used in different kinds of ways, and there are different types of genius. Someone with an IQ that is off the charts qualifies immediately as a genius, even if he or she is unable to create anything original at all. Then there is "creative genius," which is what we are talking about, I guess. Yes, Monk is the personification of a creative genius to me, someone who had a completely unique sound world inside of himself, and was somehow able to bring that whole sound world gift to all of us.

I have the JSP and Columbia CD boxes, as well as the Columbia LP series. When I reach for the Hot 5s & 7s, I almost always choose JSP: great sound and programming.

. Not necessarily. They pretty much cleaned the Impusle! vaults a long time ago, but the new studio material released in the last few decades comes almost entirely from the Coltrane estate, i.e. tapes that Coltrane kept at home. I know of no reason to think that there is not any more.

I love Dex, used to never miss his concerts, and have virtually all his records. But how can they objectively justify putting him above Pres and Hawk?. No problem preferring Dex as a matter of taste but... I would say the same for Getz.

I didn't even consider myself a fan. A CD store was at the last day of its closeout sale - all remaining discs for $1 each. Not much was left, but there was a stack of this one. They were also playing it in the store and that sold me right away. This record has been in very regular rotation ever since, one of the most beautiful and emotionally-riveting collections of music that I know. It might have been my best spent dollar.

Yes! Jazz Contemporary too. Whistle Stop is one of my very favorite records, not just for Dorham but for some of the greatest Philly Joe (IMO).

Maybe the T-Bone Walker, and partly because I have had it longer than any other Mosaic set. I also come back to the Benedetti Charlie Parker set on a regular basis in search of being surprised again by relatively fresh-sounding Bird solos. I certainly spin the Andrew Hill box on a regular basis. I probably listen to Lester Young more than any other artist. So those relatively new Mosaics should eventually become the most listened to.

I am a long time iTunes user. I have a large digital collection and manage my musical manually with a number of different iPods. Suddenly, iTunes is no longer allowing me to load any music onto any of my iPods. The musical files are there. I can play them on iTunes. But I cannot transfer them anywhere. Does anybody have any idea of what could be going on? Thanks
