  1. Last year the subject came up, and I did a quick wiki-search and was astonished/fascinated/repulsed to read this part in the "origins and variations" part of the article: Of course, it's Wikipedia, so take it with a grain of salt and all that...
  2. Link. I had no idea that those ads ran from '64 to '85. Good gig!
  3. Good Work, my man! Congratulations!
  4. ... and, if memory serves, the theme songs to the TV shows "Dallas" and "The Waltons."
  5. "Good Bait" by Tadd Dameron and Count Basie
  6. I'm calm, I just think it's ridiculous. I grew up on a farm. We had outdoor cats and indoor cats. The indoor cats were the beloved pets of the family and were well taken care of. With the outdoor cats it was understood that, although we loved them too, they might get hit by a car, freeze to death, catch rabies and have to be put down (happened a lot), or they might get into the neighboring farmer's chicken coup and he'd kill them. That's the way it goes. Did the guy who claims to own the cat actually take care of it besides giving it some food and a couple of toys? Did it live in his home? Did he change it's litter box? Or was it basically an outdoor cat that he fed and enjoyed? To me, that's the distinction. If the cat is basically feral, then I don't see a problem with somebody killing it. If it was the guy's pet, then there is a problem. People shouldn't be allowed to kill another person's pet on a whim. As for comparing the life of a cat to that of somebody's grandmother... c'mon. Let's get real. Exactly, if we're talking about a grandma who has a loving home and a family. But hey, if it's one of those feral, homeless grandmas out there roaming the streets and digging in peoples' trash, then I say she's fair game!
  7. Trombonist/Composer Steve Wiest recently recorded a big band CD with a piece called "A Night in Pidruid", inspired by Robert Silverberg's "Lord Valentine's Castle".
  8. Where did you hear that?
  9. ...Have you seen these things?
  10. James Moody, talking about all the dancers and production in music videos: "It's like they got you standing over a turd, and they're tryin' to take your attention away from it!"
  11. Sorry to hear about Zora! I'm sure it was a horrifying experience for both of you. Hope she mends quickly.
  12. I've done a few LPs to computer with my Mac, but I've used Audacity (free) and Final Vinyl (cheap) and they both worked fine. I've used the Griffin iMic between my TT and computer, and it works great, too.
  13. yeah thats probably right. i forgot you could apply distinct rules to huge age groups dont all guys over 30 have ED? maybe theres a link I'm over 30. Do I have ED? Hell yeah! I've got all six seasons on DVD!!!
  14. I always thought he was just Okeh!
  15. I'll cover that last 2% for you. It's a contrabass clarinet (could be a contra-alto clar, but those are often referred to as contrabass as well).
  16. I....don't......think so.... My bad. I was reading Leonard Feathers' original liner notes (first mistake...) and it starts, "This LP constituted a double premiere. For the first time Sommy Rollins in heard appearing before the publick as leader of his own combo." Meaning, it's apparently his first "live" date as a leader. Too much Scotch last nite... And if it's all the same to you, I'd rather not think about what you do in your pants...
  17. OK, technically it was fifty years ago yesterday (Nov. 3, 1957), but it was on a Sunday, so close enough for me. "A Night At The Village Vanguard" Sonny Rollins doing his first record date as a leader (and I think it was also the first live recording done at the Vanguard). The trio date starting with a matinee with Pete LaRoca and Donald Baily. Apparently Sonny wasn't satisfied with the sound/feel of that set, so he sent them home and called Elvin Jones and Wilbur Ware to play that night. A beautiful record of swinging trio playing! Share the love?
  18. I hope you're joking, and not promoting illegal downloading. im not joking. i find it to be the best marketing tool available to rising artists. i wouldnt own half the albums i do if i didnt preview them (omg illegally) first. Here we go...
  19. Cool video. I knew nothing about the "Amen Break." When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be about Clyde Stubblefield's "Funky Drummer" beat on James Brown's In the Jungle Groove. From what I understand, that's also a very frequently sampled beat. Anybody know of some examples of that? BTW: I was going to make a snarky comment about how the whole thing sounds so "dated" but I didn't want that can of worms to get opened up again!
  20. There are some Hal Galper albums: "Children of the Night" "Reach Out" "Redux '78" (I think this one has Randy on it)
  21. Got my cancellation email this morning. Happy Freakin' Halloween!
  22. Haven't received a cancellation....yet. Got a message the other day, delaying delivery with a projected date of 5 November- 11 November. We'll see, but I'm not counting on it. Edit: to mention that I did get the Joe Henderson Milestone box deal from da Bastids, and that will provide some solace...
  23. Arno Marsh---> RANDISSIMO!!!
  24. Mercer Ellington Me (my dad played in swing bands in the Seattle and Portland area after WWII, not a heavy jazzer, but could swing and blow some good solos)
  25. Several years ago, when I was house hunting, I looked at a place for sale on Elvin Street. The house wasn't right for me, but I almost wanted to buy it, so that I could drive home to Elvin every evening!
