  3. Stumbled on these guys at the Montreal Jazz Festival back in 2013. Free outdoor show. Very Good Bomata. The Bass clarinet player's name is Guillaume Bourque https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=29vPC5H_mpw
  4. Prior to obtaining this set, I had no Oscar Peterson in my collection. After obtaining it - I don't think I need any more Oscar Peterson. But it was worth the price - which for me was only the cost of shipping. I got it so long ago I can't remember the exact source or circumstance, but I had a big credit due and Verve was offering some of their Mosaic sets at a huge discount and voila - I got the Peterson set. I have not listened to it in a number of years, so a lot of this is recollection. To also add some context, I'll unabashedly proclaim myself a supporter and fan of Mosaic. One of the reasons is that they have filled substantial gaps in my collection - as is the case here. To add further context, based on comments here and elsewhere, I believed Peterson to be a lesser-weight jazz guy whose appeal to the masses rendered him less important in the eyes of true jazz fans - as in why play one note when you can play 5? Juxtaposed to that is the vibe I got when I attended the Montreal jazz Festival - a city that holds Oscar in high esteem. That made me very curious. To cut my long story short, I got the set and I really enjoyed it. Lots of nice guitar, piano, bass trio stuff. Nice swinging vibe. I enjoyed the vocal tracks and I think there are quite a few of them, If I remember correctly. Those tracks, in particular have a Nat King Cole trio vibe - which makes them pretty cool in my mind. The 5 notes instead of one is obvious to a certain extent - but by what I've read - this set represents some of his earlier work wherein that particular technique was not quite so evident. Some times it feels a bit piano bar-ish. At other times it's some really cool swinging small group jazz with vocals. Overall - very satisfying. In summary, I really enjoyed the set. But - I feel that I've now got enough Oscar Peterson to keep me happy. Not going for any more.
  5. Is "Limbo" what I know as "the Power of Three"?
  6. Went through a divorce that finalized 7 years ago. Awful, painful experience with many dark days from which I emerged a stronger person and better father that I might have otherwise. Met and married a great woman who is, in addition to being a great partner for me - an excellent stepmother to my children. Those are the Cliff Notes. Don't want to go into any more detail than that here. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to discuss anything about your situation, my situation.
  7. I live about 10 miles south of Buffalo in Orchard Park, NY In late November - in a storm hence christened "Snowvember" - the the southern half of Buffalo and the entire tier of towns south of Buffalo - known as the snow belt and ski country in our area - were pounded with 6.5 to 7 feet of snow over a couple of day period, 13 people died. The majority of deaths were due to heart attacks associated with shoveling. Local health officials warned anyone 50 years and older to use extreme caution and awareness when attempting to shovel. Given the demographics of this board - I just thought I'd pass along the words of caution. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/02/120228123941.htm
  8. The sonic debates that surrounded this set really had my curiosity piqued but because of the price point, I thought I'd not be picking this one up for a while. As I state above, I was shocked to receive it as a Christmas gift. Since then, I've listened to it at least three times over. Overall, I think the set is superb. I've said it before - I particularly like this type of set from Mosaic wherein the output of a label is featured. In the case of Dial, I'd never heard most of the music in this set and am glad I was able to experience it for the first time. Also, I'm not much of a comparison sort of guy, so I don't usually go to other releases to compare remasters. I suppose the fact that I still have most of the early McMaster Blue Notes and have not "upgraded" is somewhat telling. So, for the stuff I already have from this set - It depends on why I am listening to it as much as it does how it sounds. More often than not - when I reach for a set like the Dial set - it's exactly because I want to hear the output of the label rather than a particular artist. In that respect, I think the music on this set sounds fabulous, but there are some moments that are better than others. Sometimes - and it's not limited to this set, but also to other sets of older music - I feel like that guy Francis from the movie 'Round Midnight - huddled outside the basement window of the Blue Note jazz club in Paris - listening to great jazz musicians, not caring how it sounded as much as enjoying the fact that he was able to hear this great music. Don't get me wrong, I want to listen to the music in the best possible sound and I trust that a label like Mosaic is going to do their best to present the best possible sound in their sets. Speaking in general and not about the Dial set in particular - If/when there's the occasional whooshing of a cymbal, a muddled bass or some distortion of some other instrument - If it's been produced by a reputable company like Mosaic - I'll go into my "Francis" mode and simply enjoy the fact that I'm hearing - music that I otherwise never would have had the pleasure of enjoying.
  9. 29. Got the July 4, 1828 question wrong.
  10. In what was a total surprise, this set found its way under the tree yesterday. I was as happy as I was surprised - as all the conversation about the sound really had me wanting to hear the music. I'm not an audiophile by any stretch, so much as I suspected the problems with tracks in question in no way impeded my enjoyment of the music. In fact, had there been no issue discussed on the board, I would have chalked up what I heard to lousy source material. I trust that Mosaic is going to issue the best possible sound they can. The music on the set is fabulous - I've listened to about half of it today. It's shaping up to be exactly what I was hoping for relative to the content. As I've said before, I really like these single label sets that Mosaic has done. Minor point - I really like that the Dexter Gordon made the cover image.
  11. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all.
  12. Lots of dressmakers here. Add one more.
  13. Lasagna - I make both a meat and a vegetable version. Home made sauce. I'm told it's pretty good and has become a tradition in the family as I've been hosting Christmas Dinner since 2005.
  14. I've listened to this at least 5 times since I received it in the mail. In a word - superb .This is definitely a record that continues to reward with repeated listening. HP sums up the high points nicely and that's basically everything. Like more than a few here on the board, I cut my progressive teeth on the likes of Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP and Pink Floyd back in the late 60s and early 70s. I hear that foundation on this album - but it is no derivative walk down memory lane. It's definitely of the new modern prog rock school. The problem that I have with modern prog rock is that I don't have the time I'd like to really delve into it. The past few years I've really become of fan of Steve Wilson/Porcupine Tree and a couple of others but just have not expanded my listening. So Theo is forcing me to make time. Great album Listen loudly!
  15. That boxset is really good. And there are various DSM covers too. It's been a number of years since I listened to this. I had forgotten how good it is. Those DSM covers are are very nice. Nicely packaged set.
  16. Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions
  17. Is that a David Stone Martin cover? Yes indeed.
  18. I have to say that this discussion has been compelling. I can't wait for the sets to start arriving so that some opinions based on listening to the set can be rendered. The hypothetical positions have been fascinating. Looking forward to the opinions based on the aural experience - which I'm thinking might be as wide ranging as the hypothetical. Either way, I'm still picking this up at some point as this type of set is right up my alley.
  19. Add me to the list of those who have taken advantage of this offer to replace the defective disc. I sent an email on November 25 and today - 4 days later - my corrected disc arrived. I find it amazing that they are still doing this years after the release of the set. They must also find it amazing that they are suddenly receiving requests based on the resurrection of this thread. Thanks for bringing this to our collective attention.
  20. This is exciting news for me. Some of my favorite Mosaics have been these anthology type sets - HRS, Capitol, the Clifford Jordan Strata East set. I have zero of this Beehive material - so it will be a no-brainer for me. Will have to get in line behind the Dial set though.
  21. Back in the late 90s, I was, as usual for that time in my life, at the Montreal Jazz Festival. I spent a lot of time wandering around from stage to stage when I stumbled upon a performance that was right out in the street. If memory serves, it was outside on the street around where the old Spectrum was, for those who know the site. At any rate, the crowd was huge, and they were groovin'. The band that was playing was an organ trio. B3, drums and Baritone Sax. Holy crap - one of the most memorable shows I ever saw there. Totally greasy, totally honking and totally fun. The baritone sax player was actually the leader of the group. His name is Charles Papasoff. The group was apparently one of his side projects called Organ Donor Clinic. Just to hear that baritone honking and echoing around the streets of Montreal with the B3 along for the ride was a really cool experience. It was actually the first time I had ever hear the baritone sax live. I bought their CD, but was disappointed to find out it was recorded a few years earlier with Papaoff on tenor. Good, but not the same. So the performance lives only in my memory.
  22. Been spending the last few days working my way through the Ahmad Jamal set
  23. No problem. This set started at $149.99. There was only one bidder - who had bid $150. I have to admit I sniped it at the end. My max bid was around $165 - but I ended getting at $152.50 as the second of two bidders. Looking forward to listening to it this weekend.
  24. I became aware of Mosaic Records in the late 1990's. An interesting story, to me at least, is how I became aware of Mosaic. I was at my office at work and was working on implementing a Pharmacy Information system in the hospital at which I am employed. It was late - perhaps 9 or 10 PM and I was on the phone with a technical person from the system that we were implementing. Since I was pretty much alone, I was playing some Dexter Gordon discs (rather loudly) as I did my work. The guy on the other end of the phone - I'll call him PF (real initials in case he is a member here) asked me if I was listening to Dexter Gordon. Who would have thunk it???? Some guy on the other end of a phone identifying Dex.... After some talk about Dex and jazz, he mentioned Mosaic Records and the fact that he had just picked up the Jackie McLean set and that it would be right up my alley. He got my address and sent me a catalog - which I still have - along with a note that he attached. Based on that recommendation, I ordered my first Mosaic - the Jackie McLean and have continued on as a fan of the label. At the time, I gobbled up everything I could but missed out on one - The Cecil Taylor/Buell Neidlinger set. I've watched for this set over the years and have always missed out - either by timing - or that the price was too high. Just this past week, I was able to score a set on ebay - from the seller bluenotesound. I think most know who that is. The set was delivered today. It's pristine. number 41 for those who care. Looking forward to listening to it. One of my Holy Grails has been obtained..... Nice.......
