  1. Mrs Vibes new do looks way more than just pretty good, vibes.
  2. Don't look to me for in depth analysis. I have a reputation of being way too easy to please. I got the set this afternoon and am half way through disc 3. The intitial impression thus far is that I am digging the hell out of this set!
  3. As far as fusion goes, I entered jazz via the fusion route in the early 70s - RTF, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles, Billy Cobham, Herbie Hancock. I have just one word to utter........................ respect
  4. Don't you mean who's Bebop???
  5. Want to go in 50/50? I'll take the discs, box and booklet. You get the shipping material, free catalog and receipt.
  6. Just received my shipping notice
  7. That was a cd set, btw.
  8. One just went a couple of days ago for $233.

    Mizell?

Does it help if I have This Is The Place on while I'm posting? I love the groove on Wealthy Street - that's what's on now.

    Mizell?

I've said it elsewhere, so I might as well make a fool of myself in this thread as well. I like the Mizell stuff I have - Byrd, Bartz, and Humphrey. I enjoy the groove and feel. Essentially, I think they're a fun listen. Great jazz? No. But definitely of the period and I do enjoy stuff from that period. I'll have to check out what's on the disc but if there's a fair amount of things I don't have, I'll pick it up. Steppin' into tomorrow, baby! So shoot me.
  11. Vee-Jay Shorter/Morgan - all 6 discs, random play. I like this one more and more with each listen.
  12. I've often wondered about Mosaic's long term future as well. I sure hope they are around, but I wonder what they will be releasing in say 10 years. At any rate, I developed and executed my own personal strategy. Suffice it to say that these days, I just buy the current releases as they come up. If Mosaic ever goes belly up, I'm all set.
  13. I broke the $50 barrier for a fill-up the other day with my mini-van.
  14. Buffalo - especially these days - is not exactly a jazz Mecca. There are a few clubs - a couple of which do all types of music - that book national acts. My favorite place these days is the Lafayette Tap Room. It's primarily a Blues room though, so I'm not sure is they'd be interested. As a venue though, it's real nice - intimate, long bar, lots of room, great beer. 716 854 2466 There's also the Tralf - modern day incarnation of a legendary Buffalo jaaz club called the Tralfamadore Cafe. They book all kinds of acts 716 854 3068. The guy who runs it these days is new to the business, is in debt up to his eyeballs and the place has been threatened with closure a number of times. That didn't stop Joshua Redman, though. That's where I saw him in June. Joshua Breakstone and John Hammond are on the upcoming calendar. www.newtralf.com Another place - one that's known for booking an eclectic array of music is Nietzsche's. It's located in one of the rather bohemian neighborhoods in Buffalo and would be a good spot as well 716 886 8539 Mohawk Place is another place that books a variety of acts including blues. 716 855 3931. The River Grill books a lot of blues, mostly local 716 873 2553 And yes for those who asked - the Anchor Bar still has jazz every Friday and Saturday night and the legendary Dodo Greene still belts 'em out. They seem to have locals booked regularly and I don't think they do music on other nights.
  15. Not even part of that Basie Clef/Verve set you and I are supposed to be sharing? ←
  16. Jackie McLean... and I would never get rid of Mosaics...
  17. So here's the story. Recent life's circumstances have provided me with a LOT of free time. I live in the Buffalo, NY area - a mere 5-6 hours drive from the home territory of Organissimo. I've been interested in catching these guys live and my new circumstances have provided me with an opportunity to do just that. Problem is, I don't want to sit all alone in some bar in some city where I know noone. In other words, I wonder if some of you local guys might be interested in setting up a date at one of the big O's regualr gigs to get together. I hate to use the word "hang" - that's just SO Jazz Corner (not that there's anything wrong with that) Quite frankly, other than Chuck and Paul (conn) I'm not even sure who's in the area. ( Uncle Skid perhaps??) At any rate, at this point, I'm looking for some input from some of you guys who live within driving distance of any of Organissimo's gigs. I'd like to gauge the interest in setting up a date that a few of us could get together and catch one of the live shows. I know how convoluted these things tend to get from experiences on other boards. I'd like to avoid that. Perhaps I am being unrealistic. I wonder if some of you locals might take a few minutes to check out the dates on Organissimo's home page and offer up some suggestions. Thanks Ed
  18. Personally, I think that the "catching up with" feature is great idea and is certainly one which belongs..........................................on AAJ. My initial thoughts when I saw the thread title were - leave it on AAJ - no need to duplicate it here. I like the atmosphere here and I like the fact that musicians, jazz critics/authors/producers and regular guys like me can co-exist in an atmosphere that is free of stratification. I've checked out some of the Catching up withs on AAJ. The Osby one is very good. The Tom Evered one sucked. Some of the other guys I'm not too familiar with. Nonetheless, my opinion remains the same - it's nice...............for AAJ. Then, upon hearing about the adverstising link and Ricci's comment to Chuck. all I can say is thanks to Jim and Organissimo for this board and to Jim Dye for the Back Room.
  19. Like I said above - n the last few years, I have been able to divide jazz into two main categories - stuff I like and stuff I don't like. I just got sick and tired of listening to something and analyzing it as to who is playing, what influences do I hear, is it a rip off or too derivative, is it too poppish or to danceable, does it groove enough or too much etc etc etc. As an entrant into jazz in the fusion focused 70s, I dig a lot of the electronic stuff I hear by Truffaz, Hargrove, Stefon Harris. I'm so sick of having the stuff compared to Miles I think I'm gonna I don't care - it grooves and it please me so I listen to it. Same with the early 70s BN stuff, Pat Metheny, John Scofield and a lot more guys who on various boards over the years have been analyzed to death over whether they're jazz or not or creative or not or their technique is good or not. I've been able to enjoy awhole lot more music than I ever thought possible - yes even the 70s Donald Byrds. I dig 'em for what they are even though when they came out when I was a fusion head, I thought he was the biggest sellout going. Now I listen to them and think of one thing - they're fun. Sometimes that's enough.
  20. Over-intellectualized? Not by me, I hope. In the last few years, I have been able to divide jazz into two main categories - stuff I like and stuff I don't like.
  21. AWESOME!!!! ← Man I just kicked some serious ass
  22. I have found used yourmusic.com since the $4.99 days and have not been disappointed. I'm still waiting for them to add some of the more recent BN stuff like Blanchard and Charlap, but in the meanwhile have picked up a lot of nice stuff. My last queue selection was the latest Kurt Rosenwinkel - outstanding. I've also picked up some stuff that I would not otherwise buy and some things that fall into the oldies category - like Rare Earth, some CCR. Over all I like it FAR better than BMG because there are none of those confounded monthly reply cards, the shipping is built right into the price and I don't have to get headaches figuring whether the buy 1 get two free deal is better than the buy one get unlimited at $2.99 depending on how many I buy, then figuring the shipping.........
