Very disturbing video. WAY too much Greg Lake nipple action for my taste.

FWIW, the "12th Man" is one of the names on the Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame at Ralph Wilson Stadium. 12th Man -
I enjoyed the recent Moran, Truffaz, and Osby releases as well. But those are releases from last summer and from a year ago in Moran's case. Harris' last effort was from 2004 I think. I guess the label's jazz releases are too few and far between to keep them in my consciousness.

I check out the Blue Note website from time to time and wonder what the hell is up with that label? I'm talking about their lineup of contemporary artists - not the reissue stuff. There was a time - especially when the BNBB was active, that I looked to Blue Note not only for their reissues, but also for their new releases. I know a lot of you guys had dismissed Blue Note as a contemporary label of any relevance long ago. But I have a ton of 90s Blue Notes in my collection - Scofield, Ralph Peterson, Bill Stewart, Charlie Hunter, Tim Hagans, Rodney Jones, Benny Green, Kevin Hays, Eliane Elias, Renee Rosnes - stuff like that. Even 3 years ago at the time of the demise of the BNBB, there was stuff I'd buy. I happen to enjoy the MMW, Soulive, St Germain, Ronny Jordan, Karl Denson releases. But there were also Bill Charlap, Jason Moran, Osby, Stefon Harris, di Battista, Terasson. All in all I though the label did a decent job in today's market of releasing some solid maintream jazz offerings and some decent stuff in the jam/groove/dance sort of vein. A good enough job for me to look to them - probably because of some misguided brand loyalty as much as anything - and pick up many of their offerings. But for the last couple of years, it's been Norah Jones, Amos Lee, Karen Anne that get all the bandwith at the BN site. Seemingly, there are very few legit jazz releases. I know they have Blanchard and Glasper and the new Andrew Hill release is now up on the site. But do they have any other artists signed? Are Osby, Moran, Harris still with the label? There's a bunch of Blue Note for lovers releases on the site and the news is typically dominated by the aforementioned trio and Marsalis, if he is even still with the label. I guess I just think it's kind of sad that the label has sunk so far out of my consciousness when I think of today's jazz scene. That's translated to my reissue purchases as well. If I have it already - be it McMaster or on a Mosaic - I'm not re-buying it. Bummer.

What's your local/regional jazz/NPR station?

Have you contacted either of the satellite radio companies? -
Just got back from The Derek Trucks Band concert. Well, half of it anyway. Seems my 11 year old has become quite the blues afficionado and digs Trucks. So even though it's a school night I took him to the show and because its a school night, I left after the first set. I bring that up because I really would love to have heard the second set. The first set started slowly and was somewhat uninspiring. I did not recognize any of the tunes, but both the vocal and instrumental numbers seemed to be just vehicles to let Trucks strut his stuff. Like I said, they started slowly and perhaps a little disjointed. But by the fourth song, he and the band had hit their stride. They played a sort of amalgam of rock, world, r&B with a bluesy jazzy sort of feel thrown in for good measure. During the second a couple of long instrumentals with some great rhythms and flute work were outstanding. A totally excellent reading of Greensleeves done with a very blues/jazz feel and some vocal numbers that finally worked. That half of the first set seemed to intensify and reach a crescendo during Greensleeves - the next to last song of the set. It left me really wanting to hear more. I thought Trucks was outstanding, by the way and his band complemented him well. Worth checking out, IMO.

I was thinking of Maxine. She does read on this board. I know she posted once. On the Dexter Board she said she comes here and reads some threads. There's a Dexter Gordon board???

If you enjoy the Stern show, it was pretty much like a regular Stern show, with a couple of swear words thrown in. He did say this morning that they are working on having the show available for online listeners. That will occur sometime in the near future, though no timetable was given. Also, the show is repeated at 9PM on the east coast. There are separate feeds on Howard 101 for the west coast.

Took the plunge. Installed it out in my driveway. (Nothing like a rainy day in Buffalo in December to run a chill right through you) Activated it. Groovin'

Hmmm... A Buddy Rich European Version?
Ed S replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, CD Universe has pushed bck the availabilty date of this set from early January to February 6. The pre-order price is now $130. I ordered several weeks ago at the $91 price which history shows they will honor. -
Beginning with the Gerry Mulligan Select, the Select boxes will incorporate the B&W photo on a silver background which we believe will make for a more elegant look. Also, to trim some costs without affecting the production value, we are eliminating the preprinted set # although they will continue to be Limited Edition sets of 5000 each Hope these will look better than the current boxes. I have never liked the pastel colored boxes - probably the only thing that Mosaic has done that I did not like as a matter of fact.

Tolliver Hi Tod - don't be a stranger -
I placed an order with CD Universe today for the Land, Ellis, Condon, Hall and Adams - along with the Hank Jones Oka-Tones release. I'm interesteded in hearing this more obscure stuff from the BN/Capitol/etc vaults. Would love to hear some Jonah Jones.

Bummer about the masters I was looking forward to this set as a way of presenting multiple artists under the umbrella of a single label. Reinier or anyone who might have some insight - does this mean that the set is dead completely or might they go into "leave no stone unturned" mode and conduct a more exhaustive search of whereever it is that the masters are stored. I was just thinking about how the Stitt masters were discovered and wondering if lightning might not strike again.

I like when somebody digs up an old thread - gives me the impetus to check out something I have not listened to in a while.

First - a little history. The Town Ballroom is the most recent incarnation of a club that's been around Buffalo since forever. In its hey-dey as the Town Casino, it was *the* place to be for entertainment from Buffalo up to Toronto. The likes of Sinatra, Cab Calloway, and John Coltrane performed there. It morphed into a local theatre company's main stage, then the university's downtown theatrical venue. Most recently it was a club called Sphere which though well intended, became a magnet for TROUBLE including some shootings. So - now it's the Town Ballroom and there I was yesterday for the Robert Cray Band. Now, I have listened to Cray for years and generally enjoy his abums and their blend of blues and soul. In no way was I prepared for what I heard last night. It was a fabulous performance by Cray and a VERY tight band. I always have preferred live Blues to albums anyway, but this performance left me astounded at the difference. The soul was more soulful, the blues was WAY bluesier and cutting and the funk way deeper. Overall, it was generally a LOT bluesier than a lot of his albums too. It was one of those shows where you could close your eyes and get lost in the groove, if you know what I mean. Of course it did not hurt that I was seeing the concert with someone who - in a short period of time - has become very special to me. (For those of you who are hip to my ongoing divorce saga) At any rate, if you dig Cray at all, I'd definitley take the time to see him live if presented with the opportunity. Of course, I' am very easy to please so keep that in mind
