  1. I've done a couple of these starter pack sort of things and they have been received well. IMO, Mark (Jazzmoose) nailed when he said that you have to know the tastes of the recipient to some degree and looking at something more modern. I also tend to go with a few contemporary pieces in such packs (Contemporary as in current, not "contempo"/smooth) The current/recent roster of Blue Note artists actually has a lot of accessible stuff. The new Lovano and Bill Charlap are two very accessible releases. Jackie Terrasson has some nice stuff as well that should appeal. I particularly like Smile. If she's anythng like most of the women I know who don't like jazz per se but dig the music I play at get-togethers (ie-stuff that gets you movin')- some of the Blue Note releases by the likes of Ronny Jordan, Paul Jackson Jr (not his most recent one - too smooth), Karl Denson, St Germain, Rodney Jones fit the bill nicely. Perhaps even Erik Truffaz if she's more adventurous. I'd also consider some Pat Metheny Group material. Their most recent release is very accessible as are the classic stuff like Letter From Home and Still Life Talking. Actually, the live Road To You would be another good choice. If you're thinking of more contemplative stuff, Tomasz Stanko's new one is really nice (Suspended Night). If you want to use my wife as a barometer of how far you can push the envelope, she really digs Charles Lloyd's and Dave Holland's recent ECM stuff. If you really need to include a jazz vocalist, I'd go with Dianne Reeves or Diana Krall. The way I figure it, using contemporary artists helps to include a number of factors - jazz is a living, breathing artform; contemporary sound, trends, and production values. I know that some of the above suggestions might not be the best from a jazz lover's perspective, but you're not buying for a jazz lover. You're buying for someone who wants to start exploring. Actually, I think you've made some pretty good choices from an older jazz standpoint - though I'd scrap the Ella and Bill Evans. IMO, there's always time to explore the greats. I'd go with trying to make a connection first and I've found the current material a good way of accomplishing that. All just my opinion of course

    Elvin is dead

Sad news indeed. I saw Elvin only once - at the Artpark Jazz Festival in Lewiston NY. He was nice enough to sign a copy of A Love Supreme for me. Very friendly guy. He put on a great show that night. I think it's great that he was playing as recently as he was even if he was in rough shape and that the jazz fans who saw him were able to pay tribute to this legend. It must have been great for him as he neared the end to know that he was so loved, appreciated and respected. I picked up the Elvin Jones Mosaic about 6 weeks ago and it's been in heavy rotation ever since. Great stuff. Spinning 5/4 thing right now. That whole disc 4 is a monster. What a great way to celebrate his life - boardmembers and fellow jazz fans worldwide are reaching for some Elvin Jones tonight. For those who don't have the Mosaic, I say fear not the era from which it originates. There is some absolutely kick-ass stuff in this set. Superb, creative, intense, rhythmic. There are a few clunkers as in any complete Mosaic set , but as a set this one is so vastly underrated and overlooked that it's a shame. Order it tomorrow. Commemorate Elvin tonight.
  3. I hear she's Shirley Jones' daughter
  4. Brad PM sent your way Ed
  5. I wonder what percentage of the catalog's value is attributed to their jazz holdings? I certainly hope that whoever purchases Fantasy is jazz reissue friendly or would be willing to sell off/lease the jazz holdings to someone who is in the event that they may have no interest in doing jazz reissues.
  6. I'm in for 100 bucks. Who's keepin track?
  7. Hey - congratulations Vic. Great to hear from you. Best wishes to your entire family.
  8. Thanks for posting that review. I pre-ordered this disc from CD Universe along with a few others coming out next week but was having second thoughts and was going to cancel. I think I'll give it a shot and see what I think.
  9. At a higher price than Mosaic charged. The list price will certainly be higher. $49.98 is the list price I've seen quoted in the Mosaic brochure. Some list and retail prices of a few Blue Note sets at Cd universe: Herbie Nichols - 3 CD set $53.98 list/ $42.69 retail Getz Roost - 3 CD set $38.98 list/ $34.85 retail Bud Powell - 4 CD set $55.98 list/ $52.98 retail Monk - 4 CD set $55.98 list/ $48.95 retail The pricing and spread between retail and list is all over the place. But if the set lists at $49.98 it seems it would most like retail in the low $40s. The pre-order price through CD Universe, though, could dip below $39. Look at the Dave Brubeck pricing: Dave Brubeck - For All Time - 5 CDs $44.98 list/$31.49 pre-order Personally, I'd rather give my money to directly to Mosaic and do. I just hope that if the pre-order price or perhaps even the retail price is below $39 that people don't flip out.
  10. For your penance, you must register and make 100 posts HERE
  11. This board seems to have adopted an unspoken motto that has worked to make it a very pleasant place to post and/or lurk, in spite of the presence of a political forum: What happens in the political forum stays in the political forum
  12. Dan Tried to send a reply but kept getting error messages. I hope they went through. If not, I'll be away from the board for a few days and I'll try to hook up next week. In the meantime, let me know if you got my message. I don't have a lot of faith in the PM system these days.
  13. I don't find it shocking either. Card carrying non Puritan here. I listen to Howard Stern so it takes a lot more than that to raise my eyebrow from a shock standpoint. I just wondered that since the word vagina is so rarely used in this context whether he was trying to been controversial or was some Stern wannabe. I have found that wannabe's often fail in their attempt at being outrageous and come up with material like this guy's handle. I guess the only thing I find shocking about it is how lame I think it is. Perhaps Mr. Vagina would step forward and offer an explanation that might help me understand the meaning. Not that I deserve an explanation mind you, but I am kind of curious how someone could come up with that one. It seems that on a board where both genders are represented one might want to be a little more considerate in their choices. I'm shutting up about it now about this because I seem to be making more of it than it is when I'm really not trying to do that at all. Freedom of speech and all. Plus, the guy has jumped right in and made some decent posts right off the bat and I really don't want to scare him off or insult him more than I have. Yes I made a few remarks but they were intended to be humorous - like the wide open remark you mentioned and my alternate aliases. Perhaps they weren't taken in manner with which they were intended.
  14. Steroids will kill you. Just cork the bat.
  15. or hip boots
  16. Could it be then that you simply hate the saxophone?
  17. Wouldn't you like to be.....my neighbor B)
  18. Oh, and by the way. Welcome to the board. I think you made a poor choice in board aliases but I've been know to make some poor choices myself- just see the recent AAJ thread. Not to say you made a poor choice just because I think you did. It's just my opinion. and I've been known to be wrong. Just see the recent AAJ thread. So welcome saxophone vagina. And sorry 'bout the remarks. You kind of did leave yourself wide open, though. I think in the future I'll just refer to you as s.v. from now on. okay?
  19. Okay, then I'll settle for just plain stupid
  20. Whoah. What's up with the alias?????? I don't object to it because it is obscene or anything. Like conn 500, I think it's just plain stupid. Don't know if you're trying for the Howard Stern in your face shock alias sort of thing but you really missed the boat on this one. I'd change it just so other posters don't think you're a jerk, unless of course you're trying to make the point that you are a jerk. In the meanwhile. I think I'm thinking of changing my alias to "nipple chips" or "butthole trumpeter" Is a poll in order?
  21. Another 323.5 Sorry, don't know how to post the image.
  22. 323.5 Sweeeeeet, baby B) and I'm just warmin' up
  23. I could play that all day. Personal best - 320.5 Most fun I've had in hours.
  24. Holy smokes! Victor How've you been? I missed this thread earlier and just tried to email you but got an error message. I did a search and saw that you've posted recently. Why don't you come around more often. Your contributions have been missed.
