  1. Sorry for sidetracking the thread. Now back to more lunch boxes.
  2. Tell me about it. In our house we had some wicked device called "the Piddah" (spelled phonetically from the Polish word) It was a broom stick handle - cut about 1 foot in length. Nailed to the very end of the handle was a piece of leather belt about 18 inches long. The last 6-8 inches or so of the leather belt was frayed - so the "Piddah" was essentially a whip or flagellum. Nice huh? Needless to say, it hurt like hell.
  3. Never had a lunch box. Why back in my day, the entire school was sent home for lunch. I attended a neighborhood Catholic grammar school which in its heydey probably had about 600 students. With the exception of a small lunch room that held about 20 children, we all went home for 1 hour. I was the 1960s by the way. My how times have changed.
  4. Who's Kevin Lowenthal?
  5. Interesting. I definitely have to find out more about this LWayne cat.
  6. The Quebec Hardee Mosaic which is now stored in one of several secret impenetrable locations is not going to be sacrificed for this acquisition. Even hinting at the source of my funds puts this entire operation, ...er purchase in jeopardy. Goad me no further.
  7. I guess I'm a casual fan of Van Morrison. I only own 4 of his releases, including this one - Moondance, Poetic Champions Compose, How Long Has This Been Goin' On plus the new one. I've heard some other stuff by him and liked it but never bothered to pick anything up. Maybe then I've got a different perspective on this one, but I rather like it. Enough to go out and get a couple more Morrison releases I'd say. I've only listened to it twice and have now turned it over to my wife and probably won't see it again for a few weeks.
  8. Thanks for posting that. It's EXACTLY what I need for my.....oh......never mind. I fear I've said too much already. Gotta go.
  9. Thanks, I think. I wonder if that stuff will work on my....... oh never mind................
  10. Equally disturbing are the responses that some of those wankers made in the rest of the thread.
  11. What exactly is a "Red Bull"? I fear I am living far too sheltered a life as I do not know this.
  12. I knew that a Vinyl forum would bring jazzhound out of hibernation.. Welcome back.
  13. It's just the Sonny Clark song - can't remember the name right now. I should have been more clear.
  14. Also on the Mosaic is Quebec's Blue and Sentimental
  15. They are part of the limited release of 7500 sets. I have purchased several Mosaic sets through authorized retail outlets in the states - Ellington Reprise, Four Freshmen, Christy/Lee. They are always numbered.
  16. No go on the autograph. The dressing room is so far from the auditorium that I would have felt like a stalker going after him. At the last show I saw, Osby and Moran hung around the lobby area. I was hoping for something like that. I agree about the bass player. I wish he was up a little more in the mix and the drummer a little lower. He was way up in the mix.
  17. Wish I would have known you were going Tony - would have liked to have met you. My wife and I were both having trouble hearing the names over the applause, but I thought he said the drummer was Eric McPherson. He was terrific, wasn't he? Great show.

I don't know the jazz scene there. But they have a great art museum - the Carnegie. It adjoins their Museum of Natural History which is first rate as well. About an hour and 1/2 outside of the city are two Frank Lloyd Wright houses - the legendary Fallingwater- which is magnificent - and the lesser known Kentuck Knob.
  19. Never heard of the Golden Eight release. I just checked Half.com and bagged a copy for $14.99. I'm not sure if that's a good price or not but what the heck. Looking forward to hearing it.
  20. Some more talk on the music on this release here: Ron Carter - Golden Striker
  21. Just got this email this morning. I'll be hunting for a summer home in the South of France later this week. I hear St. Tropez is pretty nice but I'll be checking out a few spots so feel free to offer up some suggestions. Ta ta.... And by the way, the first thing I did was dig out the family tree - so I know exactly who all my relatives are.
  22. Thanks for the advice. I'm not really sure if I want to lug my Mosaic box around but I'll definitely take a couple of discs.
  23. Congratulations David. Great photo. It's nice to put a face with a name. Best of luck in your marriage.
  24. Andrew Hill pays a visit to Buffalo in two weeks and I can't wait. I bought my tickets about 3 weeks ago. By the time I got my lazy ass over to pick up the tickets, there were only 4 left. That's pretty remarkable for an outpost like Buffalo where jazz is a pretty tough sale. The auditorium seats 350, by the way so it'll be a nice sized crowd. Th Albright Knox Art Gallery sponsors a wonderful jazz series each year. I also picked up tickets to see Sonny Fortune and Rashied Ali as well as Bill Charlap while skipping over the Bad Plus. Back to Hill. I have a question for those of you who have seen him. Is he the type of guy who makes himself available after the show to chat and sign autographs? I'd like to get him to sign my Mosaic set and Passing Ships but would rather not have what will undoubtedly be a fabulous evening of music tarnished by either an inaccessable or ornery musician. I saw Greg Osby and Jason Moran last year at the A-K and after the show they stood out in the lobby, thanked everyone for coming, signed autographs etc. Tickets were only $15 a piece. Non members have to pony up an additional 3 bucks. Not a bad deal, I'd say.
  25. I don't know...... I see the two threads as distinct and complementary. Ultimately, they do serve the same purpose for me though. I know that sometimes I get in a rut and habitually grab the same type of titles and these threads give me some ideas when that happens. Sort of like "hey, I've haven't given that one a spin in a while" or "I was meaning to pick that one up". The difference to me is a subtle one, but one worth preserving. You sit down at the PC, log on, toss a disc in the player and hit the jazz boards. What are you listening to at that moment. Spontaneous - vs what group of titles have been floating your boat lately as seen in the monthly listing. Sometimes within those longer lists you can see a pattern. Even if there is no pattern you might see that a poster likes 5 or 6 titles that you do and then throws in one that you would never consider. Kind of gets you thinking about checking it out as well, if you know what I mean.
