  1. I'm pretty much with Rooster. When I want to hear Monk, I want to hear him played by Monk. Doesn't sound quite right to me without his unique presence, with the exception of Eric Dolphy's "Epistrophy" from 'Last Date' (and Dolphy was also a unique presence, both he and Monk were not like the other kids). Strictly subjective, no objective value judgments intended. I know something like Waldron/Lacy playing Monk is probably technically superior to Monk himself, but it's tangibly different for me.
  2. Fascinating, but doesn't sound much like what you'd expect. More sort of Madchester/Trance. But really really good of that type.
  3. I read that Erin Bromage article in the NYT earlier in the week. Excellent. I sent it to my management at work for consideration.
  4. Can't throw enough superlatives at this. Utterly spectacular, and the pinnacle of her fascinating (though admittedly somewhat uneven) career. Also possibly my favorite recording of the decade, all genres included.
  5. Excellent and fascinating, can't put it down, and I'm not even to Butterfield/Love/Doors etc. yet. Label actually started in 1950 (when Holzman was 19) as a folk and eclectic label. Also tells a lot about the recording industry as it morphed over time, and about America. Told in first person by Holzman and others. Holzman is a really interesting guy, and seems to have a lot of integrity along with the obvious vision and ambition (which he does not seek to disguise).
  6. Also "Before The Flood". I was reading a Greil Marcus book on Dylan last night which indicated that Asylum did no publicity for "Before the Flood" at all.
  7. I have been almost totally housebound through the current time, and am not keen on the idea of going to the post office, but I have three CD's I need to mail to another board member. I have internet, printer, etc. and have a scale, but do not have and have not used labels. Does anyone have suggestion on how I can use online postage to mail this small package, without paying for something like a monthly stamps.com subscription, something where I can print the postage on regular paper and tape or glue it to my package? I don't want to just stick stamps on the package because I really want a tracking number. May seem like a stupid question, but it's all new to me, thanks.
  8. Our Covid-19 threads come and go. We can name them like Zappa used to name those "Play Yer Guitar" albums (" Return of the Son of Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar" ,etc.).
  9. Civic Responsibility is defined as the "responsibility of a citizen" (Dictionary.com). It is comprised of actions and attitudes associated with democratic governance and social participation. ... Citizenship means "a productive, responsible, caring and contributing member of society." (ibid.).

    Frank Zappa

They cretainly could sing, just chose not to on those albums. I don't disagree with the sentiment that the change in direction did musical good ("Waka/Jawaka" and "The Grand Wazoo" are favorites), though sorry for Zappa's injury on many levels.

    RIP Betty Wright

Enjoyed her early work. Very bright and talented. RIP.

    Frank Zappa

Me too, but nowhere near $60 curious.
  13. "Give me an acoustic rhythm section or give me death!"
  14. 1977 to 1986 were all pretty good years, but something totally different than the previous decade, which had several great years.
  15. Can't imagine why
  16. And ironically, access to the music is more open than ever. I remember when the idea of hearing some old, out of print Blue Note album (McLean's "A Fickle Sonance" was the holy grail) seemed like nothing more than a pipe dream.
  17. I've not heard any of those clips before, though I've heard OF some of them. I actually really like those Joe Pass cuts (will look for CD of them), abhor the Sebesky cut, and find the Shank's somewhere in the middle. I agree TTK has a marvelous troll on hand here. Me, I listen to the Lovin' Spoonful, (Young) Rascals, Stan Kenton, Don Sebesky, Bud Shank, and Joe Pass. All of 'em. But I'm not "today's generation", I'm their old father or young grandfather.
  18. Yes, first one is the toughest. Comfort and blessings to you and your sister.
  19. And who would have thought that?
  20. Yes, all in one sitting, AKA "how my ears spent much of my work day". I was fairly stunned at how much I liked the saxophone only albums, as I was never big on the World Saxophone Quarter, but Hemphill calling all the shots brings a great grace to the proceedings.
