FS/FT Curtis Amy and McCoy Tyner Mosaic Selects
felser posted a topic in Offering and Looking For...
Curtis Amy and McCoy Tyner Mosaic Selects available, extra copies I have of both. CD's and inserts in great shape, outer cardboard boxes banged up. $40 shipped in USA for the Amy, $50 shipped in the USA for the Tyner, $85 shipped in the USA for both, or will trade both for Horace Parlan Mosaic or Jackie McLean Mosaic or consider other interesting trades. -
MADLY GOOD bonus session(!) on SOLOMON ILORI Conn, 1964
felser replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
Agreed. I have no use for the original album except for the fact that it is a 1963 Blue Note session. So it joins the ranks of Dodo Greene, Donald Byrd's "I'm Trying to Get Home", and "Jimmy Smith Plays Fats Waller" as Blue Notes from that era I don't actually see myself ever listening to again. But the bonus session is fine, fiery music. -
I liked the way the LP labeling looked and the slogan. And there were some worthwhile albums during parts of that time, especially by Hutcherson/Land and Elvin Jones.

To each his own, for sure. I'm not a purist, have two box sets by Chic, Complete run of 70's/early 80's EWF, etc. And like John Klemmer's 'Touch" and Gato Barbieri's "Caliente", the early 70's Chuck Mangione albums, etc. But the Mizell stuff has never spoken to me, then or more recently. Glad it does to others like you. Have not heard the Foster Montreux album or that Marlena Shaw. I do like the Shaw Montreux album.
-
No real classics there. I'm familiar with almost all of those albums, and the only ones I can recommend at all are the Grant Green and the Hutcherson. And neither of those ranks particularly high in those artists' canons, though they are both plenty pleasant and listenable.

Not my thing. $28 shipped in USA or best reasonable offer or interesting trade, PM if interested.

$35 shipped in USA or best reasonable offer or interesting trade. Great set of his 50's Kent and Crown material and more, over 100 cuts. Wonderful booklet. Just not really my thing (I only need a little of the late 60's "The Thrill is Gone" era stuff by him at this point in my life). PM if interested

LF: Herbie Hancock Complete Columbia Albums

Right with you on all of that. Also some awfully good music. Lots of both really good and really bad, with plenty somewhere inbetween. -

Some good prices for it on discogs if you can work out overseas shipping: https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/5078092?ev=rb -
That all of those early CD's were issued, like the Julius Watkins, etc. I bought them all, but doubt too many people did.

I'll offer another thumbs up for the BGO label. Totally legit, and wonderful remastering. My favorite reissue label. I've not sprung for the particular set in question since I already own the Vanguard album on CD and have not interest in the Ruth Brown CD.

I love Norah Jones because 'Come Away With Me' funded many a miraculous Blue Note reissue in the ealry 2000's. Her music not as much, though it is certainly inoffensive enough. Off the top of my head, would love to see a decently priced CD reissue of Larry Young's "Heaven on Earth" and the Jackie McLean/Grachan Moncur 'Hipnosis" set that is on the Moncur Select, and the Elvin Jones set with Lee Morgan plus his 'Merry Go Round' and Jackie McLean's "High Frequency". Not sure there are a lot of meaningful "unissued" sessions left in the vaults, and I am willing to trust that the fascinating looking "rejected" sessions were rejected for a reason (usually an out-of-sync drummer).

Got it, thx. I have great respect for that label.

And Columbia did a few nice ones in the early 70's, but the WB's were awesome, especially with the associated advertising campaign. Truth is, I'd be happy with a reissue of Larry Young's "Heaven on Earth" and willing to call it a day. Seems like 75 would have been a more likely gala celabration point than 80. I'm not opposed to complete boxes like the Columbia Hancock/Weather Report/RTF etc. if they do them nicely, and might spring for them if the price was right (as they were with the Coumbia's - and their Woody Shaw added great value with the previously unreleased stuff). Don't need a new set of single CD's of the usual titles regardless of the mastering/packaging. I'm good with what I have in that regard.

I'm oldish and out of touch, am not familiar with any of the musicians on there except Barron. Can you describe them and the music?
-
They did the same thing on the Roland Kirk box. Guess it seemed like a good idea at the time...
-
Apparently allowing them now. Not sure why in this case, as this is not public domain material. https://www.ebay.com/itm/BULLDOG-BREED-MADE-IN-ENGLAND-CDR/131749648956?hash=item1eace41a3c:g:nSIAAOSw8-tWZzCx

Received my package today, and listening to David's fabulous 'Wake Up Call' CD right now. Truly amazing stuff, so fresh and clean. Myron Walden and J.D. Allen both sound great with David, and the rhythm section and guitars are just right for the music. Lots of inspired choices of material - three of the nine cuts written by Kenny Cox or Charles Moore from Cox's great, underrated quintet. Four by McLaughlin/Shorter/Tony Williams from the Miles orbit (including McLaughlin's "Sanctuary" and Williams' "Pee Wee"), Joe Henderson's "Gazelle", and one I'm not familiar with by Lelo Nazario.

Looking forward to more details on those Sun Ra recordings.
-
I've heard some of the other steel drums material Harris did, was not knocked out by it.
-
Well worth it for old-times sake, and the CD has the original, "psychedelic" mix.
-
I love the parts of the set that have audio up to snuff. Some of the audio is unlistenable. Overall, priceless and highly recommended.

I much prefer their Warner Bros. material, have always considered "Cathy's Clown" to be one of the great landmark singles of the pre-Beatles era. Bear Family stuff costs a fortune. I agree that it is a really good 4CD set on Rhino ("Heartaches and Harmonies") which covers their entire career, including the sublime "On The Wings of a Nightingale" from 1984, written by some P. McCartney guy for them. Best bang for the buck is probably to pick up the 20 cut Cadence Classics CD on Rhino, then the 50 cut "Walk Right Back" Warner Bros. anthology. You can do all that right now on ebay for under $20, and you'll have everything you need from the golden era. If you want great notes (100+ page book), and a fuller career retrospective into the 80's, go for the 4CD box, under $40 on Discogs.
