That Jazz Messengers album is one of the greatest albums in the entire jazz canon. Not to be missed. Would be worth it for "Nica's Dream" alone, but there's much more greatness also. That being said, the domestic Columbia CD is fine and has wonderful bonus material, you don't need an import.

Can't decide if I'm more curious to find out 1 - how you fit that on an 80 minute disc 2 - what the response of someone new to jazz was to 26:25 of Peace on Earth, especially to Pharoah Sanders.

Guess it depends on how you define "towering". Jimmy Heath, Kenny Burrell, Bill Holman, Dave Pell, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross are still alive and kicking Also Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, and Paul Bley, though their influence was probably more felt in the 60's.

A full and worthwhile life jazzwise. Don't know anything about his personals. Thankful for the music he helped foster and preserve. RIP.

Most likelyiIf they don't like the Atlantic "My Favorite Things", they won't like jazz. It's about as universal as you can get.

So I was listening to the Jobim compositions compilation disc on the "Easy Introduction to Jazz - Bossa Nova" 9 CD box, and a singer named Sylvia Telles kept jumping out at me. New name for me, looked her up, she was apparently a big deal in Brazil in the 50's-60's before dying of a car accident at 32 years old in 1966. Amazing voice, much riper than the bossa nova singers I've heard before. Anyone familiar with her? Any recommendations of what to get by her? Are the later albums with English lyrics good?

Earl's "Living Inside Your Love" does for me, the only album of his I ever liked, that I grew up with, of course there was the "real" stuff too like the Jimmy Smith records in our house my mom gave me, but I did like that Klugh album. I used to own it on CD when it was reissued for the 2nd time domestically 10 years back? But after listening a few times I got rid of it, there's not enough stuff there to keep me interested in my life now. For a lot of the hip hop fans though, they have a higher opinion of these albums than we do, it's all about the grooves. My soft spots for the 70's commercial stuff include(d) John Klemmer 'Touch", Ronnie Laws 'Pressure Sensitive' and especially Gato Barbieri 'Caliente'.

Good question. Louiss was seemingly influenced by LY, at least from my perspective on hearing his records. I agree. Love the work Louiss did on the Stan Getz Dynasty session, as well as his own recordings from that era.

I'm in for the Young/Davis CD set when it comes out.

Why Prestige rather than Atlantic? Sheets of sound? Personally, I find Coltrane's later work (1957-1958) for Prestige and his recordings for Impulse! to be two pinnacles of a very different sort, while Atlantic feels like a transition between the two. Ultimately, I find it less satisfying. I certainly agree that his growth during the Prestige years was absolutely stunning, that the Trane of 1958 was something very different from and superior to the Trane of 1955.

Don't think so. They aren't up to the standards of the Fresh Sound crew - don't even give personnel info, let alone meaningful context, etc. of the recordings. They feel UK to me, basically a sub- "Real Gone Jazz" with (even) lower production values.

Rory Gallagher Irish Tour 1974 box (7 CD's and DVD) for just over $40 on Amazon. Ordered mine last night, even though I already own about half of it. For purposes of this thread, we are talking about the Mosaic 10 CD set? Never was a Mosaic.

There's an Italian version that mimics the original USA version, suppressing its value.

I have this set, and the sound is equivalent to the original bigger box on Fantasy. Note that unlike the original box, this box only has the sessions where Mingus was the leader, does not contain the Paul Bley, Hazel Scott, Four Trombones, etc. But the price is great. And you can get what you want of the other sessions on individual OJC CD's.

and remains excellent music, as does the Carter Jefferson and the Pharoah Sanders. And I like the Blakey. This is a nice set of releases.
