Granted I'm not a musician so don't have a good grasp of all the technical/theoretical nuances, but where does, say, Jimmy Smith's "J.O.S." fit into the whole "Larry Young single-handedly delivered the instrument into the post-bop scene" line? "JOS" doesn't sound like bop changes on "How High The Moon" or anything like that to me, and I wouldn't describe it as "greasy". And it's from what, 1957 or 1958? And Smith had other instances like that also well before 'Unity' (which, indeed, is a spectacular album).

Mingus's "Haitian Fight Song" would be my first thought. I used Hancock's "Olilioqui Valley" and OTB's "OTB" as answering machine backgrounds back in the day.

Pre-ordered mine as soon as I received the email from Mosaic announcing it. Haven't bought a big box from Mosaic in years, but not gonna miss out on this one. It would also be a very big box. Incidentally, 'The Great Concert of Charles Mingus" was the first Mingus album I ever heard, thanks to the Montgomery County Community College library my freshman year. So that has always remained the gold standard for me, even though Johnny Coles is missing on almost all of it.
