Ahmad Jamal, Vindicated
danasgoodstuff replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
The Kitty Kat Klub musta been some kinda klip joint (sic - sorry, my small tribute ti Kinks liner notes). Whatever y'all think of Jamal he's better 'n what you'd hear in that kinda place today (and that kinda place is probably way scarier now). -
As far as I'm concerned, Arthur is their only album that works as a whole, but IMHO it's one of the few period concept albums that really works - largely because it's about something real. "Last of the Steam Powered Trains" is my favorite track, it's Smokestack Lightening" gone all pastorial and English and, oddly, more literal and more metaphorical at the same time. And it rocks, in a Yardbirds-gone-soft sorta way. Ray has said that "You Really Got Me" was the record any number of other London bands were trying to make at the time, an impression of sorts, which makes "Can't Explain" doubly funny since the Who were presumbly one of the London bar bands Ray was giving his impression of... I think Dave/Peter/Mick wanted to be one of those bands that rocked the London clubs but Ray just wanted that to be one color in the paintbox to use for whatever picture he was drawing at the moment. The tension there is inevitable, Ray's largely winning that battle made them stand out from the bar/club band crowd and by now Dave & Ray don't even need to see each other to fight.

You don't, or at least I don't - it's the trio-ness of it that makes it, well, it. Same as Ramsey Lewis - great in that trio, much less so apart from it. And not because the other two, separately or togehter, were better/worse (and I certainly won't asign % or anything silly like that). It's the sum, not the parts. Group music like this is a refreshing change from endless jams. And you can't seperate the good/high art from the crowd grabbing gestures either - it was all part of a whole and the whole point was/is to get regular people to hear music they thought they knew (standards when they were standard, hits of the day, whatever) in new ways. to hear things you never knew you never knew, to paraphrase Pocahantus (sorry my daughter's sitting next to me and she loves Pokey). -
Who do you most wish had lived to record 3 more albums?

Magic Sam, esp'ly since he'd just signed with Stax when he died (at 32)! -
I kinda like the little sub-minute interlude with Jr. Wells that's on their box.
-
I played with Smegma - actually I did, Oct 7th at Holocene, one of those places that's so damn hip they don't put up any signage, what's that about. Smegma were big fun as always, I was like a 5th wheel with a flat tire - I think the best thing I did was to take the mouthpiece off my c-melody and attempt to play "Santuary" on it.

Any new Miles' boxes on the horizon?
danasgoodstuff replied to nmorin's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'd love to see Miles: The Singles, there are a number of unique edits from 7" or 12" that have yet to be on CD and it's the only way to cover that much ground in a CD or two and it's valid history 'cause that did isssue 'em back in the day, now why is another matter... -

Been thinking a lot recently 'bout what makes a great live albums, and this one definitely is...more so than any number of albums with bigger rep's.

I saw Cosby on BET with a variant of that band with Murray and Sharrock, they did "All Blues" and something from that album. Nice.

I'm fine with Waits, as a writer. I'm fine with all of 'em, just not v. enthused. I can think of 15 others I'd rather see in, but I'll take any and all of these ahead of Kiss.

What radio are you listening to right now?
danasgoodstuff replied to BillF's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
My friend, Tim Duroch from manyapples, has a nice avant-guarde show on KMHD 9-10pm Mondays. The show before him is good too. -
At least the Riders didn't put too many men on the field!

New box out before Xmas - sideman stuff, alternates, DVD. No coincidence?

Motian/Lovano/Frisell at the Village Vanguard
danasgoodstuff replied to LWayne's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I think Motian should try to record with this ensemble I thought he had, a bunch, or did you mean with the sub sax players? -
Given the origins of the term 'jazz', calling it "Ken Burns' Jazz" seems, um, entirely appropriate!
-
It's a Blue Note Groove Thing - I'd say defined by Higgins drumming (starting with HH's WM Man - before Sidewinder), except that Blue Mitchell's "High Heeled Sneakers" (w/A; Foster) and Donald Byrd's ____________ (w/Freddie Waits) fit into that bag, whatever you call it. Lou D w/ Egregious Muhamed, that's a whole different thing, groovey in it's own right.

"Never was so much owed by so many to so few" My late father. who was born in 1931, was fascinated by the battle of Britain. I recently helped a student (in my job at the library) who'd got it confused as 'the English war with Britain'...took me longer to untangle that one than it should have. Didn't try as hard as I should have to explain it further. There is something to be said for the veiw that the Royal Navy should've been able to tear the Germans apart in the Channel if an invasion had been attempted, and for the view that most of the war ended up being fought in the East - nontheless a great victory for (mostly) good over totally evil... -
