  1. I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer - I'm writing thsi mainly to encourage all you guys to get your boy parts checked out on a regular basis. i know the procedures can be unpleasant, but my PSA was only slightly elevated and Kaiser was NOT pushing for further exam or biopsy but I went ahead and did it and as a result I'll get to see my girl grow up.
  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melvin_Sparks not the best source, but apparently it's true.
  3. Word processing allows us to do things that couldn't be done without word processing.
  4. What bugs me more than CD v. CDR, is that there are still two unissued outtakes from this session - Witchita Lineman & By the Time I Get to Phoenix. But then there's still a whole unissued album length session from 1970 too... As well as other bits and pieces from various GG sessions.
  5. Doesn't bother me, do you know another recording of the Attractions that's equally hot, sans said drunk?
  6. I know you've expressed a non-interest in live stuff from EC, but you should at least check out Live at the El Mocombo if you get the chance. (originally a Canadian promo, widely booted and now available legit) I would put it in the top 10-12 live albums ever...
  7. Sonny ALWAYS thinks differently...as does Ornette, each in their own different way.
  8. ROTFLMAO! Thank you, that's the funniest thing I've heard all day.
  9. Didn't Lewis Porter argument at length that if you're going to divide Lester's Work into 'periods', then there are really at least three such and that the simple pre/post division and the atrribution of the presumed decline to his unfortunate army experience are a steaming pile? And I agree, the two albums with Teddy Wilson from '56 are all kinds of fine.
  10. I have this double LP, nice garage rock comp, actually prefer it to the original Nuggets. Has my boys from Winnepeg doing "Shakin' All Over" among other treasures. Cover doewn't reaaly fir it; should be something more suburban and downscale.
  11. I think the time has passed for mega-expensive boxes...
  12. The background vocals sound a lot like my beloved Clovers to my ears, right off of "Little Mama" IIRC.
  13. Maceo Parker "Children's World" from Roots Revisited, and a lot of Hank Crawford 'cause there's a lot of Hank in Maceo. A wonderful singer and a wonderful record. Indeed! And now I am taking the full plunge and have on order the "complete Goldwax recordings" and am leaning toward taking the plunge on at least one of the Ace compilations of the Goldwax label. My brother, who knows the soul genre much better than I do, sent me a link to an NPR piece on the label, that's how I found out about Carr. IMHO, there's only a few more by James Carr as good as "Pouring Water", but then there's not that much by anyone as good as that....enjoy!
  14. I saw them at an outdoor freebie a few years back that wasn't very well attended, so I have to wonder why all the hype if the're really not that popular. I too find them plodding, both literally and metaphorically.
  15. So, I was on the net the other day reading 'bout the 100th ann. celebrations taking place down in the Delta this year and it just seemed so wrong - high-end spa stays complete with facials, not not that kind of facial, Robt probably would've been into that...
  16. That certainly is...pedestrian.
  17. I was in 4th grade, next day at school EVERYONE had seen it. Had an impact, it did. Sergio Mendez, not so much.
  18. I live here (well, duh!)but probably won't go, unless I win a ticket to something...
  19. Does this mean Peter Green gets his Les Paul back? Seriously though, who would have thought that Green would outlive Moore?
  20. My memory is that So In Love is the best of the 3 (esp'ly the title tune) and it's worth $17 by itself. However, post-prison Pepper (which includes some on Contemporary)is a different animal than pre-, and not to everyone's tastes. Much more overtly 'expressive', sometimes selfconsciously so, but it usually works for me, YMMV, etc.
  21. so, in light of this discussion, I went back and re-listened to this several times. Love the head of the title tune, the solos aren't quite up to that level, and Jackie in particular isn't having his best day at Rudy's...but still it's easily 'release quality' to me, no worse than The Rumproller which is what did come out, not up to Search For the New Land or The Gigalo....
  22. I should join in the wpirit of this thread and start one entitled "The MGs do everyone better than anyone", but then I always prefered casting to trolling.
  23. Family Affair was on either Blue Funk or Blue ('n) Soul, one of those various BN artists play R & B covers or originals that might as well be. OK, not great but good enough that if I could get the whole session at a sane price I probably would.
  24. Generally agree on this not being what it coud/should/ might have been, but what it is is still well worth hearing. You could make a very nice CD-R of all the compositions of his others did on Blue Note (Lee M, Freddie H, Wayne S, am I forgetting someone?)and another of the ones Coltrane and Shepp did on Impulse. Is his son Zane stil active?
